    Re: 997 GT3 MK2 new pics

    Hello my friends,

I was waiting this moment for a while, and now that tehy have released , I'm really DISAPPOINTED.

435 ps VS 415 -> THE COMPETITION is still here and for better prices .... no comment

No PDK : all competitors (included fiat Smiley sorry Ferrari) have now some sequential/doubleclutch alternative -> no PDK for GT3 mk2

     PSM is now on GT3

Price tag : 117 K euro in germany -> PCM, bucket seats, height enhancer + some options = 130 k Euro easily

Rmk : Height enhancer is only available end of 09.......

So if you have mk1, mk2 is a disappointment .... at least for me.

Again, PORSCHE IS NOT SELLING THOSE CARS FOR CAR ENTHUSIASTS, BUT TO MAKE MONEY.... and that's a shame.

In order to be again THE reference, I would have expected better numbers, just to proove : "Guys, we are here, we are still producing better cars than you" . I don't think this is still true now....

    What's your opinion guy ?

I will certainly not buy one, keep my mk1, and probably switch to ferrari if this bad game will continue.

     Porsche you must react !!!!!!

performance figueres are just the same as mk1, may be in acceleration has a bigger difference...Can't wait to see real pics and opinions vs mk1.

They should have introduced pdk, and performance would have gone down to 3.8 -3.9 secs from 0-100kph....

    I like it a lot.

-NO DFI, good old GT1 block with 3797ccm

-manual only SO, rumor about PDK not ready for hard usage is true

-standard brakes 380mm fronts and 350mm rears-very nice indeed

    Re: 997 GT3 MK2 new pics

I think by not having the PDK the Porsche finally admited that those stupid buttons are the worst mistake that they have made, a real sports car like the GT3 can´t be driven with a gearbox that works the other way round. So we have to wait for the market dept. to come with an excuse and after that we, maybe, will get the PDK. Or if the costs are too big to change the working way of the buttons we will see it just in the 998 GT3 (or 991 the name it will have). As about the rest of the car I like it very much.

Changing the direction of the buttons or even changing to the more usual interface of paddles, is a matter of software mainly and an afternoon's work for Porsche engineers, if they need to or want to do it. There must be other reasons for the " manual only" GT3.

However, may I ask you for how long (time and distance) have you been using the PDK interface? And why you haven't adapted to it yet? And what exact problems you have encountered? Please share your experiences with us.

manual only SO, rumor about PDK not ready for hard usage is true

Maybe PDK cannot be mated to the older engine? Or too costly to adapt for the limited number of GT3/RS built?

Also, perhaps no logic in having a GT3 RS with PDK since its racing offshoot the RSR uses a sequential.

    Moogle:

    Too complicated.

Maybe it will look better in a  darker colour.

I thought so, too. At least more appropriate on a track car than on a streetcar as the Turbo and, as on most models, one will get used to it in daylight. Smiley

    Re: 997 GT3 MK2 new pics

I am sorry to say this but a modern sports car from a high tech manufacturer, without DI and the choice of some kind of automanual, PDK or other kind, is a retro step.

Maybe the RS could be simple like this that is effectively a homologation special. But the GT3 is a road car as much as a track car and the technology should have been more complete. I have deducted points from Porsche for this Smiley

    Re: 997 GT3 MK2 new pics

I'm happy about the GT1 and the over all look of the car, except for the "3.8" on the wing... It cheapens the car IMHO. Power would have been better at 450 with DFI. The single hub wheels will limit your options for alternate wheel/tire sets too. I don't care about PDK personally, but it would have been nice to get some kind of performance auto gearbox in this car. Maybe in 2010?

    Re: 997 GT3 MK2 new pics

was a bit worried they would not get the exterior right and have to admit it's a beauty...but what a disappointment performance wise.

have got a deposit on one and the salesman has already called !! these guys used to be so busy in Dubai!

What would be the added value of DI on a trackday-spec Porsche? Unlike you I'm excited that Porsche has fitted the GT1-engine, a characterful engine with real racing pedigree.

Same goes for the choice of a manual gearbox, a GT3 has never been about innovation, it's a car for the purist, people who enjoy feeling connected with their car. What better choice is there than to provide one of the best manual gearboxes available? I dread the day you won't be able to change gears manually, tip-heel under braking, ... That's what a GT3 should be and still is all about, driving, in it's purest sense. No matter how good a PDK with steering-wheel mounted paddles would be, it'll never come close to the best manual for driver involvement and pleasure.

    Good job, I say! Smiley

It's not where you're going, it's how you get there that counts

Few informations from my P. source:

-new GT3 engine is updated old GT3 engine

-NO PDK since it is NOT possible to mate it with GT1 block(too big)

-PDK is not durable enough for usage in GT3 anyway since some test mules suffered from gearbox overheating under stressfull usage(P. technicall stuff really tried to introduce PDK in GT3)

-PDK 7 speed layout is not good for track driving(6speeds are more then enough for most tracks, little bit longer then usual 2. gear is also very good thing for most tracks)

-can you imagine GT3 with standard PDK programm? Seventh gear at 100km/h?

-another good question is what engine will be in 997.2 Turbo?

-Ring time is at 7.40min level

    Re: 997 GT3 MK2 new pics

I wonder if they have improved the RMS this time (worked fairly wellin 996GT3 but lots of leaks with 997GT3)?

I think it sounds like a very nice improvement (I don't care about PDK and 3.8L is a nice trade for not having DFI).

Cool that they raised redline and displacement at the same timeSmiley

    --

My point didn't relate to the use of the GT1 engine (which may be the stronger engine for the track) but DI is a component of any modern engine for both CO2 and consumption.

If Porsche bothered to use DI on a 100% race car, the RS Spyder, why not on a road/track car? Reasons of economy in development I suspect?

There should also be a choice between a manual box (for people like you) and a very good auto/manual like Ferrari do on their cars with the F1 box. They could develop/adapt a sequential type transmission from their race cars if the PDK didn't fit the GT3 characterisitics. In this way the GT3 would be a more complete proposition.
