    Both feet in

    Just got back from the track where I'm continuing to learn High Performance Driving.  They teach us that if we should lose control and go into a spin that we must point the front wheels straight ahead, disengage the clutch, and firmly apply the brakes.  "Both feet in!"

    He said there are two reasons to disengage the clutch: 1) You won't stall the engine which might prove hard to restart and 2) you don't want the engine driven backwards if the car should travel backwards.  Makes sense, but does anybody know of a case where an engine was ruined by being driven backwards?Smiley

    Yup. Very recently, in fact.  P-car at the Texas Mile into a spin at 200+mph blew the engine with the clutch engaged.

    Welcome Bonehead! And Greentree... the name rings a bell... been a while, hasn't it?

    How did you like the rest of the drivers training? Could you give some more details, pictures, impressions, etc? Most of the times, the guys that return from a driver's training are really enthusiastic, and want to go back to the track the next day ;-)

    This is a problem if you have tiptronik tranny car. I have heard Porsches that had tiptronik tranny; they are ruined by being driven backwards.

    I'm just getting started.  This was my fourth HPDE course and I have just signed up for a fifth one in December.  I'm not a "natural' so my learning has been incremental, but I'm really having a good time.  I'll post some pictures once they get them up on the web.

    I've spun only once so far.  Thankfully, I wasn't on the track at speed.  It happened on the slalom course.  I had done slaloms before, but this time I screwed up.  I started the slalom OK, but for some reason begin accelerating as I progressed through.  Finally I was going too fast for the car to handle it and instead of skipping the next cone, I spun around.  "Both feet in, both feet in".  In second gear, it's kind of hard to keep your speed steady.  The throttle is very sensitive.  If you don't pay attention you just naturally start going faster and faster.

    You know, I don't specifically remember putting both feet in when it happened.  The car had stopped by the time I was facing 180 degrees so I didn't roll backwards.  The engine didn't stall either so maybe I did put both feet in.  However, after reading the responses to this post,  I have GOT to consciously remember to put both feet in if it should happen again.  Replacing a GT3 engine would be a huge hit financially.

    Interesting! What happens with the PDK box? Does it automatically dip the clutch should my skills fail me and my car becomes a front wheel drive?

    And don't forget to keep the right foot on the brake until the car comes to a complete stop. I've seen many crahs at the Nordschleife (with the magnetic armco..) where the driver once he lost the car did the right thing (both feet in), then released the brake slightly before the car came to a complete stop and then still ending up in the armco (though with very low speed).

    haha, thanks for the additional story. Sounds like you had a blast.
    I don't know what it is with slaloms! Even when I was a little kid, riding my bike (yep dutch!), doing slaloms between the stripes on the road, after some time you end up with serious speed.

    I guess it has to do with the fact that a vehicle feels more planted when slightly accelerating out of a curve.

    Maybe one fine day I'll drive the Nordschleife.  That armco is intimidating though.  Here at the Speedway the vast majority of the spins simply end out in the grass in a cloud of dust.

    Not to hijack the thread, but I had a humbling time at the track last weekend.  I'm about 8 seconds a lap slower in the GT3 than I was in my C2S -- too timid.  I spent a lot of time getting yelled at by Steve to get on the gas sooner and get on the brakes later.

    I've always been slow to acclimate to a car, and I just don't have the miles on the GT3 yet to really feel comfortable.  I think I'm going to sneak off to H2R and just spend the whole day playing with lift oversteer through turn 7 to try to recalibrate my butt-o-meter for the new car's grip.
