Re: GT AMG tests at the Ring

I am getting very excited by this car. Especially since they are saying it will be the best looking MB ever. Hopefully they make it very attractive spec/stats/feel wise...

I saw the pics of real car and I can say only one thing-it will be mine. Period.

Specs are awsome and price is more then OK.

    EnglishManInNY:

    You can't tell us more?

Ok... Person responsible for suspension tuning at AMG is Markus Hofbauer who worked previously for Porsche(his last work was 991 series suspension tuning). Check data about him and you will see what I am talking about...

Fact that in current stage GT AMG is already faster on the Ring then SLS AMG(7.40min with Conti SP5 street tires) is telling us something. Even my P source told me that "GT AMG is shockingly fast on the Ring, think 991 Turbo S fast" with less power.

Engine is 4.0L V8 biturbo and ounds way better then any Porsche engine. Its potential lies above any current Porsche B6 IMHO. Gearbox is updated Getrag 7 speed DCT and gearchange speed  wise it will match latest Ferraris.

Design is very subjective thing. IMHO GT AMG is the best looking Mercedes so far. I like it more then(IMHO) very good looking SLS AMG.

Mercedes plays wisely regarding pricing and GT AMG will be cheaper and more practical then most of its competitors.

My prediction for 2015? In Europe we will see many GT AMG and new R8s on the roads. Porsche will even with 991.2 loose big time in overall sale of sportscar. But, no worries for them. Way too many people wants to buy Macan or forthcoming FL Cayenne---Smiley

Re: GT AMG tests at the Ring

I expect it to look like a cross between the SLS and the S coupe, particularly the latter's detailing.

Biggest drawback IMO is the long bonnet styling that restricts visibility on tight routes and the 2 seater cabin for a long car. RWD only (?) will put many Turbo buyers off.

I don't think the 911 will go below its customary sales figures as a result of this. The 911 is a range with plenty of configurations whereas the Mercedes is just a model (two if we count a future cabrio).

Re: GT AMG tests at the Ring

MBs biggest issue right now is their transmissions. Sounds like they have greatly addressed that with the GT. I am excited. I also hope MB buys Aston Martin and allows them to grow to their potential.

GT AMG is size wise as big as 991, only wider and little bit lower.

    RWD only? Naturally.

BTW, 991 Turbo S in Sport + mode can do drifts a la RWD without any problem.

Re: GT AMG tests at the Ring

Do you know if there will be a non -AMG model eventually? With a V6 or N/A V8 for example? Similar to the SL model line up?

No, GT AMG is AMG product.

Sounds promising, but sorry to see AMG go for electric steering.  Benz used to have steering worse than BMW and other competitors, but as others switched to electric, Benz was left at the top of their class wrt steering feel (with hydraulic) - now that seems to be at risk...

I think they only chose this system due to the start/stop technology to save fuel (can't steer traditional belt-driven hydraulic rack without the engine running).

Re: GT AMG tests at the Ring

Eh, still looks like a million other Mercedes probably. Car value will sink like a rock as usual, just like BMW M cars.

I don't know why Mercedes and BMW can't do like Audi with the R8. Subjective as it may be, I guarantee you the SLS sales were meh because it wasn't exciting enough. After price, more than 50%, probably even closer to 80%, of a car purchase is looks. Mercedes has yet to show anything exciting for a while now.

Re: GT AMG tests at the Ring

Mercedes are very good in what they know best. The S class is the best limousine in the world as it has always been and the E class is the best diesel taxi in the world. The SL is a top luxury cabrio+cruiser.

The styling of the SLS spoiled the underlying technique. The very long bonnet, the short cabin and the gullwing doors, although attractive for some, excluded many potential buyers.

Re: GT AMG tests at the Ring

I have seen this car now plenty of times on the street  highly camouflaged. The whole shape and size looks amazing - flat and wide, cool roadster dimensions - long hood, short rear - sitting on the rear axle. The only word pops out of my mind is WOW... speechless. Cant wait to see the final product and yes - might be my next Sportscar, too!

Re: GT AMG tests at the Ring

Looks kinda cool is the rendering is accurate, but at the end of the day it just looks like a Mercedes. It's a shame their only unique cars are defined by excessive wings and canards and crazy shit.

Unless it's absolutely stunning, there will be too much better looking and better performing competition at that price. Next-gen R8, while somewhat unexciting as well, will still be more unique and better. NSX is coming and will probably be better and cooler. P13 at some point, though probably a bit higher priced.

I do know one thing though -- SLS prices are gonna tank hard when this comes out. Unless you're in love with the doors, there would be no reason to consider a used SLS over this.

I don't know if I should ask how they shaved so much weight or why they didn't shave so much weight from the SLS. Is this car tiny or something? What did they discover that makes this 300lbs lighter than the SLS?

Re: GT AMG tests at the Ring

I actually think the SLS could increase in value in a few years - like the Ford GT. It's a classic design with the doors etc. Don't forget the NA engine too!

Exciting times in the sports car world!

Re: GT AMG tests at the Ring

GT AMG is about the same size as SLS AMG. Lower weight-new materials.

BTW, you are some kind of strange person when it comes to sportscar exterior design... None of the new sportscars is workng for you...

It's because they aren't taking any chances. I don't want to spend $150-300K on a safe design. If I wanted a proven design, I'd just buy the original car. The performance is getting borderline useless, so what I want are new, nice, and exciting designs.

I don't have $1M to spend, so 918 and P1 are out of the question, but the only cars I'm really interested in right now are the new NSX and the P13.

NSX looks fresh in my eyes, if not a little R8-ish at times. Still, Honda has no recent predecessor to draw design language from, so I think it will be fresh and quite affordable with some awesome technology. Honda is an awesome company with very good products.

Don't know what P13 will look like, but talked with Frank Stephenson a while back and he seems really excited about it. True, it's his car, but IIRC he said something to the tune of if it were his money, he'd be buying the P13, not the P1. Don't quote me on that though if you see him haha. BTW, if you do ever get a chance to meet him, do it. He's really cool and fun to talk to.

Other than those two cars, not much on the horizon I'm interested in. I'm always interested in new Ferraris I guess, but nothing new coming from them anytime soon. 458 is a good looking car as is F12, but I'm not into the prices. BMW i8 is neat, but I'm not in the market for that kind of car. I actually think the latest Boxster is great looking, maybe even better than the 991, but again, wrong segment.

IMO, there are actually more cool looking normal cars right now, relatively speaking, than exotics. If I was in the market for normal cars, I think I'd be satisfied with what's out there and what's coming. That's just not the case though. At this point in my life, I just need an exotic and the stuff I see isn't doing it for me.

Wide car with very long hood. Something for the highway not for the challenging B roads and the mountains.

Looks like AMG are Lamborghini fans. Jesus Christ is that center console big. Am I the only one who thinks McLaren totally nailed it with it's super thin and spartan center console area?

Again I diagree with you. 991 Turbo S is with 1880mm not too wide? What about Huracan, 458 or forthcoming R8(which is wider then AMG GT)? Even Macan is pretty wide and you priased its handling...

To repeat what I wrote few weeks ago-new AMG GT is marginally smaller then SLS AMG size wise(in lenght, it is almost as wide and hight is aslo almost the same).

And where are AC controls on 650S? On doors... BTW, IRIS in Mclaren is a joke IMHO. Specially in this price class.

Re: GT AMG tests at the Ring

    Hint for overall shape.

IMHO AMG GT is the best looking Mercedes car ever and I will for sure get one.
