    Swirl Marks - How Annoying!

I've just noticed that my 4 month old basalt black 987 has lots of tiny swirl marks on it. These are only noticable in direct sunlight - but are annoying.

Does anyone have any idea on where they came from? Is there any way of removing them?

Since I've had the car from new it's only ever been washed by hand with a sponge and dried with microfibre cloths. I've polished once with Zymol - HD clense and wax.

    Any thoughts?

Re: Swirl Marks - How Annoying!

    mns,

To decrease the swirl marks, you might wish to consider using:
    1) "3M Swirl Mark Remover for Dark Colors" or equivalent compound with a random orbital buffer and a wool pad or equivalent light to medium cutting pad.

    2) Wax car using foam applicators and microfiber towels in straight not circular motion.

    3) Handwashing the car in straight not circular motions using the two bucket method and some high suds car shampoo. Do not use a plain sponge for washing to minimize scratches/swirl marks.

Swirl marks cannot be eliminated, only reduced by utilizing better polishing and washing techniques.

Here is a previous thread on washing and getting the swirl marks out.

Re: Swirl Marks - How Annoying!

For daily use in the UK you probably need to Zymol wax more often than once every 4 months - extra layers of wax will add protection, albeit minimal.

Re: Swirl Marks - How Annoying!

i've previously used 3m " fill-n-glaze " with good results. it's hand applied, pink in color and is available most likely at a shop selling automotive paint products

Re: Swirl Marks - How Annoying!

percymon, a sealant polymer wax like Klasse or Zaino should easily last for four months from what I understand.

roadtrip, glazes are like makeup. They temporarily cover up flaws by filling in the swirl marks instead of getting rid of them. Good for garage queens. Bad for daily drivers. Wash the car a couple of times and the glaze disappears. But use true polishing and correct washing techniques and daily drivers can look very good for an entire year.

I tried Rejex - it lasted about a week under the same conditions as Zymol lasts a month or 6 weeks (well for me anyway). I still rate Rejex, its very ease to use and gets a good finish, just doesn't bead water for very long in my environment.

I still think about trialling Zaino, but i've got 6 tubs of Zymol stacked up in the garage at present

You might as well use up the Zymol tubs before buying something else.

I'm curious about the Rejex lasting only one week. Either Rejex is snake-oil or you methods are incorrect or your environment is unique. I have never read of an environment in which a wax lasts longer than a sealant.

Please share with us how you prep the paint before applying Rejex, the names of the products used to prep the paint, whether the car is prepped and waxed inside or outside, how many hours you let Rejex cure before exposing it to the environmental elements, the name of your car-wash shampoo, what kind of environment the car is subjected, and any other seemingly relevant/irrelevant details.

Re: Swirl Marks - How Annoying!

Did exactly as it said on the tin - even managed to get some Dawn washing product to wash off the other waxes first. I have a friend who swears by Rejex, but he doesn't drive his car daily. Every time it rains and hes parked next to mine, he has to move his car cos the water doesn't bead of his like it does on mine

I use Rejex for the wheels and exhuats tip only now- its quick, and works pretty well.

What exactly does it say on the tin?

Re: Swirl Marks - How Annoying!

Swirls marks come from how you wash the car. Pay attention on how you wash it and then you don't have to worry about how you are going to hide them. My 997 is two years old now and it has no swirls marks at all. All from careful washing.

I doubt if careful washing can eliminate swirl marks but it will certainly reduce them significantly. By the way, vtrader, your Boxster Makeover thread link is excellent! Thank you for sharing it with us.

How did you learn about the two bucket wash method? And do you wash in a circular or straight motion?

Re: Swirl Marks - How Annoying!

    INSTRUCTIONS

    1. Shake well and apply to a clean, dry surface that is cool to the touch. Do not apply in direct sunlight or in temperatures greater than 85* F.
    2. After RejeX dries to a haze (about 20 minutes), simply wipe it off. Unlike waxes that require strenuous rubbing or buffing to remove, RejeX easily wipes on and off.
    3. Allow RejeX to cure for 12 hours out of the elements.
    4. For optimum protection, reapply every 4-6 months as needed.

Re: Swirl Marks - How Annoying!

    1) What car wash shampoo do you use to wash the car?

    2) How often do you clay and then polish with a swirl mark remover?
