On a dragstrip, yes.  On a road course, no way.   There is nothing in that car's spec to suggest it is a road course monster.

    +1

I don't see the greatness in that car. One might as well bolt a jet engine to a wheelbarrow... utterly useless but wohooo so fast in a straight line.

Thats exactly my point. They could sell tons more if they would do it "right". I guess they don't care about sales numbers. 😜 The Hellcat engine is a treat.

It's built for the drag strip, there are no corners... (and it's 27x less expensive than a Chiron). You guys are hilarious.

Love the subtle digs at American engineering. Mars missions ring a bell?  Perhaps I missed the EU Moon landing. America is just a backward place trying to catch up to Europe and the rest of the world. We don't even eat with silverware. Lol.

It's one thing to take a potshot at Mopar engineering but lumping the entire US population in is called prejudice. Not to mentioned horribly misplaced.

I say all this as an Austrian in awe of America to this day.

No need for AWD, despite all that power. With the sticky tires, the front wheels end up in the air, thus unable to provide any additional traction indecision

Surprised it does not come with provisions for traction bars...

No, it's just in response to saying it's a wheel barrel with a rocket. If that's the case, then a wheel barrel with a rocket is better than a 977 GT3, which a lot of people on here will praise.

Say what you want about it, but new cars are just way better than old cars.

    Re: 2018 Challenger Hellcat 'Demon'

What way better? there is no new tech or advances making this car faster than the 997GT3, it just has 400HP more strapped into a POS paleolithic chasis period. There are great examples of me advancements and tech making new cars faster, this is not it.

ESP, TC, transmission, engine, tires, etc. Not saying it will be fun to drive, but I wouldn't be surprised if it can just get around a track faster. Power is important for lap times nowadays.

Blue- Many friends of mine died there. So over the top fucked up to mention something like that. What posses someone to mention such a thing, even as a joke, in order to insult Americans without any basis. Wow. (Not you Whoopsy).  And in terms of cars - I never said American cars were all that great. What I said and what I meant was that one car design does not make Americans stupid and backward. It is called prejudice. Like mentioning 12 fingered banjo players.  Does the only thing that makes you feel better amount to insulting others who you don't like or understand.

Perhaps the lack of politics on this forum is not allowing enough hate against America to vent from some forum members.  Try to channel your irrational thoughts in some other way please.

    Re: 2018 Challenger Hellcat 'Demon'

The 2014 GT500 stock power car with live axle was faster than 7:50 on the Nordschleife (there is a YouTube video to prove it) but I have no clue how fast the Challenger Hellcat would be. The Challenger weights over 200 kg or so more than the Mustang, so this could be interesting, despite the updated modern chassis of the Challenger (vs the GT500).

A good Nordschleife time in the hands of a pro driver doesn't necessarily make the Challenger Hellcat a good sportscar. I sold my GT500 for a reason, for public roads this car is just too dangerous and stressful to drive. Unless your name is Ken Block. LOL

With modern track oriented tires, I just think it might. The tires and brakes may be cooked afterward, but that power goes a long way when combined with modern tires and electronics. This thing is like 20mph and 3s faster than a 997 GT3 in just a 1/4 mile straight line.

OK, so maybe it won't be able to take corners with that suspension. Hopefully it still gets tested.

I think you are underestimating how much time there is to lose in corners and during braking on a race track.  That is why a Viper ACR Aero laps faster than a 918 Spyder, just as an example.  Hellcat suspension just isn't setup right for track work.

Would be interesting to see though!  I'm sure the track oriented Camaro is already faster than the 997 GT3.

This is exactly the kind of car that captured my interest as a teenager -- before I discovered sports cars and Porsche.

I have to say that a very "American" type of fun is drag racing.  That's why Tesla has so much purchase in the USA.

    Mike

That was exactly my experience as a teenager as well.  I had a 69 Z28, which was well equipped for road racing, but my dominant racing interest was drag racing.  I think there are a couple of reasons for drag racing's popularity in the US.  The geography of much of the US is flat plains with long straight highways and relatively low population densities.  When I was in high school almost every little town had a quarter mile drag strip marked out, with paint, somewhere not too far from the city limits. Unsanctioned races were not unusual.  And even sanctioned drag racing was fairly common with many cities having a NHRA sanctioned track.  There was just not much opportunity for road racing, legal or otherwise.  If you were interested in going fast, drag racing was the only game in town.

    Re: 2018 Challenger Hellcat 'Demon'

I love watching drag races...kind of fun. We don't have many events in Germany though and the number of drag strips is even more limited. I understand the attraction but it would be too boring to participate. Watching these races is more fun. 😎

kisskiss I was going to post this. Also, I would like to remind our European friends when Ford decided to build a high performance sport car to beat the top European models at Le Mons it did so in grand style. It shock the racing world.

No doubt European craftsmanship is highly prized by many of us. But to denigrate American engineering skills is a fool errand.

In grand style? Hahaha. How many attempts did it take? Yes, it was a great feat by Ford to eventually beat Ferrari at Le Mans but it took many years and Ford almost gave up due to the miserable results.

Com on guys, they just did a special version to make the fastest production car for the strip.....what is wrong about that, they never claimed a lap time...it cannot just do it..it is enginered to just accellerate as fast as possible..

    well done...i love it

you haven't read about the details, only the headlines.

Ford build the new Ford GT solely to win Le Mans.

It started off as a pure race car. Once they got the spec done, they convert the race car to road car to homologate it. Completely different than any other manufacturers where they pick their road car and cover that to race car.

Ford compromise the road car to suit the race car, the others compromise the race car based on what's required on the road car. That's the difference.

This is not degrading American engineering, it's actually a praise. Ford read the rule book with enough details that they can confidently develop a race car that has all the advantages and none of the disadvantages.

Many years? Ford has barely even made an attempt to race at Le Mans in the last 5 years. They wanted to win in the 60s and they did. They wanted to win now and they did.
