The speed over time diagram in the evo test is interesting as it highlights the disadvantages of a manual gear-box (GT2 RS)... Just note how the speed drops at gear shifts at higher speeds. The auto gear box in the Cayenne has no such delays/speed drops.

You are right, it could account for a few tenths per lap. Still questionable whether I would prefer the PDK over the manual gearbox.

Something else. Whoever said the GT2 doesn´t sound nice:

I am a bit surprised that the Aston DBS is faster on this circuit than a Panamera Turbo.  Any other comparisons of these two cars?

I thought the same until I saw some surprising things on racetrack during club events and get some owners comments with lap times to confirm what they said.

The info came to me from french and swiss GT2 RS owners used to run big toys as Carrera GT or GT3 Cup and compared the GT2 RS to their previous 997 GT2...

I would rather assume that the guys who reported the stuff are trying to find an excuse for there (moderate) driver skills Smiley I can tell you that the RS is way faster (lap times) than the 997 GT2 in the hands of the same driver. And I can also report that the Carrera GT does not accelerate faster or has faster lap times than the RS. Compared to a 458, for example, the RS has so much power that you don't lose any ground when the 458 accelerates very hard (200kph>300kph) and the GT2RS stays in 6th gear (!).

The GT2RS is the fastest car available on the market today - it can kill everything. I am 100% satisfied Smiley

I test drive the GT2 RS around Stuttgart myself and had no doubts about its power, but it was a press-pre-serie car with the number 000 on the glove box... Smiley

I have no doubts either about the drivers skills I'm talking about otherwise I would not have considered their talks.

    Re: 997 GT2 RS - Official Information & Photos

The GT2RS is a GT2 engine with different intercoolers (shorter but fatter) pistons and rods (claimed) and ECU tuning with basically more boost (yes it has a plastic intake expansion manifold but I understand its dimensions are the same as the GT2 aluminium manifold). The GT2 runs 1.6 bar peak boost which means a lot of heat particularly for a VTG turbo engine which will run hotter post turbo temperatures because of the way thh VTGs work.

An independent test in 18 degC ambient temperatures saw a stock GT2RS at 75degC intake temperature after a gunning on the autobahn.

The power on the road in different ambient temperatures and types of usage (or on a dyno without the correct type of cooling) will vary widely from the 620PS quoted.

at 55DegC intake temp the timing and boost begin to be pulled from optimal and by 75degC IAT a GT2RS will lose 70hp maybe more.......

A 0-300kph run in sub 20DegC will no doubt have all 620 of the horses but a track session in 30DegC will undoubtedly lose 70 or more hp.....

    This can be the explaination...

Do you know if the standard 997 GT2 has the same intake temp issue?

    Re: 997 GT2 RS - Official Information & Photos

Yes the standard GT2 is exactly the same but as it runs a little less boost ~1.4/1.5 bar it holds onto its power a little longer.

Mo on here with his white GT2 has noticed 100hp power losses running in middle eastern 40degC ambients.

The ECUs on these are very sophisticated and take readings from many sensors and finely adjust timing and boost to keep the engines longevity..... remember these engines are virtually identical to the 420hp 996 turbo engines and they run 100+ hp more, whilst bigger turbos will provide cooler Intake air they are still constrained by the factory emmissions dictated cats which give horrible back pressure.

The stage 1 tuning for the GT2 includes 100 cell race cats and this is the main reason how 600hp can be hit at similar boost to stock, but even this kit has teh same temp issues.....

I will reveal all in a thread shortly but suffice to say Schmirler had a horrible time building my 3.9 litre 735hp VTG engine and even after he had signed it off the first time his further on road testing showed that the VTGs gave elevated IATs ....... in the end he had some special even bigger VTG turbos made to provide cooler charge air so the target hp could be hit with less boost, and I am running through expensive aerospace intercoolers (not the $800 factory units)

Maybe you could tell these other GT2RS guys that they might have been unlucky with their cars as other owners you know have absolutely no problem in outperforming GT2 and Carrera GT lap times with their (standard) GT2RS Smiley

Marcus, you are so right, this point is often overlooked and the GT2RS in 30degC, even if it is losing 100hp on the track may still have more power than other more thermally challenged brands who have similar factory rated hp........ maintaining over 600 turbo hp in 30degC track conditions is still a massive challenge and your $800 intercoolers are not made for this.....

Thanks for the comments re my "new" car, I will do a thread next week when I have some numbers to share and give the gory details with some more pics Smiley

Porker and BIturbo ,  J Seven, this is my original 2009 GT2 but now modified in most areas for 2011, yes still have the 993tt, it has been for SOR at Specialist cars of Malton for a couple of years, it is at a high price so likely I will end up keeping it
