Heading to the Le Mans 24H

This year I'm swapping my annual pilgrimage to the Goodwood Festival of Speed for a journey to the Le Mans 24h race.

The idea is to experience the whole atmosphere so we're heading there on Thursday afternoon, together with the great British flock of supercars. On Friday we'll enjoy the campsite (Blue Nord) and Mad Friday, Saturday and Sunday it's racetime obviously.

Anyone else here going or experienced in going to the 24h of LM? I'm looking forward to it immensely!

I was at Le Mans in 1999 (the year the Mercs decided that flying down and off the Mulsanne was preferable to actually staying on the race track). I will be attending again in 2014 (Porsche's return to LMP1 at Le Mans).

It is a fantastic experience, and I am sure that you will enjoy yourself immensely.!1334130841988singsong.gif

Re: Heading to the Le Mans 24H

In the GT classes this year Audi seem strong with the R8 LMS. They started the FIA GT1 championship with convincing wins against strong competition. They won in the Bathurst long distance race. Perhaps, they can dominate LM too.

I'll never forget that year! I was 14 and a big supporter of the CLR Mercedes' (even today I still think they look fantastic), I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw the closed garages in the Mercedes pit boxes when I turned the TV on after a small break...

I'm afraid the battle in LMP1 will never be as fierce as it was in those days, but I'm hoping for some action in the GT classes. Smiley

Here is the video from that event:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SFN_Gp1eHN0

LMP1 is going to be a walk in the park for Audi.

The GT class should be good, but unfortunately the 2012 Porsche seems to be as far off the pace as last years car. Lets see if they can squeeze some more performance from the car.

2013 will see Porsche with a factory team getting ready for their 2014 return. Possibly in the 918 RSR (pure speculation).

Mercedes wasn't the only one to flip This is from the 1998 Petit Le Mans.

Lower downforce for higher top speed.

Yes, I remember watching that on TV at the time. If you are interested in reading an excellent as to the causes of these two accidents, then I recommend this here.

Thank you, really interesting. Very fine balancing of parameters and unpredictability of track incidents!

Re: Heading to the Le Mans 24H

The cars are prepared for the pilgrimage to Le Mans. The reasoning behind the n°5 is the Aston DBR1 which raced at Le Mans in 1959 if I recall correctly, a car which is just like mine, British Racing Green.

Have a great time Porker ! Looking forward to hearing all about it and seeing your photos when you get back :)

Re: Heading to the Le Mans 24H

Excellent! Enjoy it and I'll be thinking of you as I follow it on computer, radio and TV (South Africa's Super Sport 6 will be transmitting it live in its entirety)

Are you camping? Where will you be situated?

Re: Heading to the Le Mans 24H

Yes, we're camping. I don't think the real LM24H-experience is found in the comfort of a hotel room. wink

We're camping on the Blue Nord-campsite, is that any good?

Re: Heading to the Le Mans 24H

I'm not sure. I have not camped at a campsite there before. We had paddock access and main grandstand seats and then slept a few hours in our rented car in the parking lot.

I think blue -norte is by the concert area and so basically you will be somewhere around the end of the front straight.

Re: Heading to the Le Mans 24H

Enjoy every moment of this great experience!  We'll see you there in 2014.  Smiley

Re: Heading to the Le Mans 24H

Just got back from 4 days at Le Mans, straight to my office, the resemblance with 'The Walking Dead' wouldn't be too far fetched.

Nevertheless, 100% worthwhile, I'll be there every year from now on. The atmosphere on the campsite, "Mad Friday", the sun setting and rising over the track, ... Really a must-do for every petrolhead!

Re: Heading to the Le Mans 24H

It's actually quite clever that VAG are allowing Porsche and Audi to compete.  In fact why not let all the group companies compete - Bentley, Lamborghini  - they can only win as a group...  In fact the cynics might suggest that it would be a single-make race series!

One picture capturing what the LM24H was all about for me, enjoying likeminded company, watching cars and having a beer. I'm the one with the hat and shades.
