iPod and MP3 Compatibility Question for MY2006/7 911 owners

I have been told that the CD Changer is unecessary becaue of MP3 playback capability of the 997s stereo system.

Could someone please confirm a couple of things for me (and soon since I am running out of time to change my order ).

    1) Does the Bose system play AAC or Apple lossless? Does it play .wma or .wav files? Which files does it play from CD?

    2) If there is an iPod hookup (using the MOST technology by connecting directly or via auxiliary at the exchange located where the CD changer would be) do AAC or apple lossless files play?

I know the engine sounds great, but I want to hear it roar ove audiophile quality Miles Davis

    Thanks for your reply.

Re: iPod and MP3 Compatibility Question for MY2006/7 911 owners

The indash unit plays MP3 and WMA disks, but not AAC or "protected" files (like you get from iTunes Store). You can create folders on the CD to sort your songs by some method. The PCM will display the folders. You can't nest multiple folders. The PCM allows only one depth of folders.

This isn't necessarily a complaint of the PCM but its odd that in my iTunes all of my songs have the proper album and track information yet when I burn those MP3 files to a CD some of them only show up with the filename, meaning that the PCM can not detect any ID3 tag information. I am starting to think that iTunes only stores that information on its internal database and does not write that information back to the individual files. Maybe someone else can set me straight on that!

As to your question about iPod integration. Nav-TV has a unit that you can have installed and Dension has one that will be out in the next few weeks (if not already.) Both of those units take over the multi CD changer functionality so if you have one of those I believe you lose control of it with the iPod device installed. I am still undecided whether I want to go the iPod route or find a shop locally that can install the Sirius satellite kit from a Cayenne.

Good luck with your choice and your new p-car!

Re: iPod and MP3 Compatibility Question for MY2006/7 911 own

Thanks for your answer Very helpful.

If I do the direct iPod connection, do you know if this increases the variety of files that can be played back on the unit (e.g., does the iPod treat porsche sound system as an amplifier only).

I am committed to using the iPod ...

Re: iPod and MP3 Compatibility Question for MY2006/7 911 own

The iPod integration kits (Nav-TV, Dension) just hook your iPod to the sound system (and PCM). The integration kits allow you to select playlists, songs, etc., from the iPod, but all song decoding is done on the iPod.

Re: iPod and MP3 Compatibility Question for MY2006/7 911 own

I burned an MP3 disc with multiple folders (one folder for each artist) and the songs from some folders would play and others would not. Two of the folders would display the folder's/artist's name but would start playing songs from another folder. All of the songs were downloaded to the computer from CD's and were burnt to a data CD using the program Roxio which came with my Dell laptop. And this MP3 disc play fine on my laptop. Any ideas???

I determined that if a bracket '[' or a parenthesis '(' was in the filename the PCM could not handle it and skip right over it. I haven't done all that much research on these problems but I think the PCM might be limited to filenames of a certain length, etc.

I put together a Christmas MP3 CD that had about 7 folders on it. Two of the folders were unreadable. One of the folders had about 50 tracks in it. I plan to put that entire folder on its own CD (as an MP3) and see if the PCM can deal with those files better if they aren't in a folder. I maybe able to determine why its failing if I do it that way.

I think the PCM is very picky about the file names. No weird characters, etc. If I figure things out concretely I'll be sure to post my findings.

Re: iPod and MP3 Compatibility Question for MY2006/7 911 own

keep in mind that we're hitting 2007 and Porsche still has no solution for mp3 playback.

Usability wise I find that the Audi s4 nav package has the best system with 2 SD-slots, that way you do not have to throw out the CDs, it creates too much complexity

Re: iPod and MP3 Compatibility Question for MY2006/7 911 own

I will also add that iPod is not a very usable mp3-playback solution for a car. It is great for teenagers to listen to music in a school bus, but for a car it is never a 100% solution, you always feel half-assed, like there is a hack or a shortcut.

Re: iPod and MP3 Compatibility Question for MY2006/7 911 own

hmmmmm, seems that there is a solution on the market just now link

Re: iPod and MP3 Compatibility Question for MY2006/7 911 own

I read the link you have just posted. But it raises as many questions as you answer

    - Does a current MY 997 C4S have a PCM2 (the material all describes PCM)?
    - If I order PCM, in order to get PCM2, do you need to also order the 'extended' navigation model?
    - Has anyone installed this?

I have just ordered my Carrera, would be nice to get an answer within the next two days

    Thanks for the good research!

Re: iPod and MP3 Compatibility Question for MY2006/7 911 own

I skipped the CD changer as I installed the Nav-TV iPod kit in my 2007 997TT.

The Nav-TV iPod system is not perfect and I find the Porsche in-dash MP3 player more stable.

    A few things to consider:

The CD changer does take up some space in the relatively small C4/TT trunk.
Most iPod kits cannot coexist with the CD changer.

I have just determined by looking at the songs that I referred to above that the songs that play normally are not protected and the ones that will not play are protected (determined by bringing up "My Music" folder then the folder for the individual songs and pointing to each song. This displays info about the individual song which includes whether it is protected or not. Is there any way to copy protected music to an MP3 disc where it will play? Help!!!

Re: iPod and MP3 Compatibility Question for MY2006/7 911 own

We have been organizing a large group buy on the Dension product:

    http://www.bumperplugs.com/DensionGroupBuy2.html

It will completely disable the cd changer, and all info plays through the nav screen. Non nav units will be available as well.

Final testing has now completed, and we expect our first units next week. Once we have them installed we will place the group buy order, hoping for January deliveries.

To get on that list, just email me. Not a sales pitch, just a heads up that this unit is coming very soon and should solve the problem.

One program that I found that will convert protected iTunes songs to MP3 is MyFairTunes. http://hymn-project.org/forums/viewtopic.php?t=1555

It does the conversion by actually playing the song in iTunes and then capturing the data stream that is bound for your audio card. It intercepts the data stream before it hits your sound card and saves it as a plain AAC lossless file, an option in the software is then to have iTunes convert the file to MP3. It reads the tag information from the protected song and adds that to the newly created file as well.

Since the program must play each song it is a slow endeavour but until a better method comes around to unlock music you legally purchased it works as needed.

Re: iPod and MP3 Compatibility Question for MY2006/7 911 own

This program is 100% illegal in the USA. Using it, hell even mentioning its name, is a federal crime under the Digital Millenium Copyright Act.

It is a disgrace than we, as legitimate customers, are forbidden from enjoying the music we purchased. The law must change. The sooner, the better. Write your Representative and Senator today. Actually, you should have done so two months ago.

Does this unit work with a CDR24?

    Thanks
