Top Gear: Aston V8 beats 997S at the Ring...

I was surprised to learn that the Aston V8 Vantage beat a 997S with PCCB at the Nurburgring in Top Gear mag this month. Until they wrote (paraphrased), "in order to even out the fact that the Porsche had PCCBs, we put racing tires on the Aston"...

PCCBs vs Corsas? Uh... yeah, that's totally fair

    Gotta love Clarkson and Crew.

For those who didn't see it, that was after a comparison test against the clock by the Stig on a closed road, the other cars being the BMW M6 and Aston Martin DB9.

Wasn't DB9. it was the new V8 Vantage.

Re: Top Gear: Aston V8 beats 997S at the Ring...

It was Sport Auto that decided to put on P-Zero Corsas on the car as a response to porsche sending them a 911 with an LSD, -20mm sport suspension and cermaic brakes. The P Zero corsas are a factory option from AM.

The Germans wanted to play fair I guess....

Re: Top Gear: Aston V8 beats 997S at the Ring...

I read the Top Gear magazine today. The ring time of 997S with PCCB was 8min5sec, the Aston V8 was 8min13sec. Then they put the Corsas on the Aston and cut 10sec off the ring time to 8min3sec, beating the 997S by 2sec.

Re: Top Gear: Aston V8 beats 997S at the Ring...

the c2s official ring time was 7,56 , no?

In their latest issue, AMS has a comparison test between the AM and the 997 Carrera S with PASM and PCCB.
In all handling tests, the 997 Carrera S beats the AM, including the Hockenheim Ring. The AM does 0-125 mph one second slowlier than the 997 Carrera S. So I wonder: how did the AM beat the 997 Carrera S on the Nordschleife, this doesn't make sense at all???

BTW: the AM they tested had the Corsa tires too, what a surprise...

Nick, I heard some interesting figures about a F430 and 997 Turbo comparison on the Nordschleife. I won't post anything because I know you wouldn't believe it and of course it wouldn't mean anything without proof but let me say this so far: a lot of F430 owners will regret having bought a Ferrari if they were seeking for performance only.
Just can't wait for the first 997 Turbo test and the final horsepower figure. Another surprise for you...

And a last thing: you say Porsches are no longer best performing sports cars. How is it possible that the Carrera S has the same 0-125 mph performance like the 360 Modena with 45 horses less? How is it possible that the Carrera S is four seconds faster on the Nordschleife than the 360 Modena and costs around 30-40% less? So you don't consider the 360 Modena a "best performing" sports car?

I would make a F430 vs. 997 CS comparison but unfortunately there is no track data available for both in a direct comparison.

Of course it was the V8!

Why dignify with a response people? I like Ferraris but am starting to think that nberry must have a lemon 430 cuz he's too busy trying to hijack P threads with his negative agenda. Nberry the only passion, excitability and sensory overload you have is how it makes you feel to be condescending to others. Next time I see a 430 at the red light, with the driver cranking his head every which way to see who is looking at him, I'll know it's you. Vanity buffoon

Re: Top Gear: Aston V8 beats 997S at the Ring...

To those that are a bit slow in thinking listen to RC, here is a man with knowledge and experience. Now for those who knock Porsches, you are entitled to your opinion and every right to be wrong. You don't like Porsches so be it. Porsche has been, is and will always be one true sports car, period. British will be partial towards their cars forever. Jags were nothing but a pieces of junk forever until Ford bought them out and even now they are nothing to write home about, but I always liked them and many people do. I would never wish to own a Jag but I like them. Triumph, Jensen, Autin, MG, Lotus were cars that we al liked a model ot two of them but where are they today.
Now AM is a different league all together but None of the 3 AM's DB7, DB9 and Vanquish that I have driven have that sports call feeling like a Porsche. I am crazy about Ferraris and Porsche's and have and will always have the most respect for them. Afterall the beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Did you all marry a gorgeous woman, you might think you did but others might not agree. Do you care? No, not if you are happy

Ed, well said.. the last two sentences really say it all. It just gets old reading nberrys stupid little rants about how lame the P is. And poor RC, IMO an outstanding moderator on this site, who actually takes the time to discount and dissect nberrys statements.. he does a great job of it, yet I get the feeling it's a waste of time, because I believe nberry just sits back and enjoys all the passion that he stirs up. I know the majority (vast majority) of people on here are outstanding individuals, unique in their own way, and above all, respectful of differing viewpoints/opinions. Although I must say, the quality of the other Ferrari owners more than makes up for nberrys lack of charisma and individuality.. the few I have talked to on this site are phenomenal people. It is getting easier to pick out who are the trust fund babies, and who are not

Except the 911 outperforms the Aston in every measurable test of speed.

Re: Top Gear: Aston V8 beats 997S at the Ring...

why do i get the feeling that nberry was the kid on the playground who always bragged about how he had the biggest lollipop that got the most attention & if another kid showed up with a slightly smaller & cheaper lollipop that tasted just as good or better than his...he would run up and smack it out of that kids hands & proceed to say "na na na na na na"

honestly, I've read his comments on this board for a long time, and i've chosen to not say anything in response, well not any more.

nberry...you have a ferrari, good for you, we all know it & you make sure we know with every post you make. There are quite a few other ferrari (& other "premium") car owners here that have quite a nice collection of cars that aren't porsches (STRADALE, 69bossnine, Mike S come to mind the soonest) These guys all have cars that many of us would love to have & none of them have the attitude that you have. They seem like friendly, approachable people. They seem like the ones who if you saw them on the street, you couldn't be able to tell that they are successful. You (nberry) strike me as the person who flaunts his success & the type of person who yells @ the girl @ starbucks because there isn't enough whipped cream on your double expresso-mocha whatever drink. RC would be doing this forum a real favor by restricting your posts to the Ferrari & Sports car sections only. Then the rest of us with open minds wouldn't have to deal with you as much.

& thats the end of my rant

Re: Top Gear: Aston V8 beats 997S at the Ring...

The Aston is a beautiful car, but the 997 is the superior handler I'm sure. Those tires make a huge difference.

Nick, you always seem to find a way of turning any kind of discussion about Porsche into an discussion/argument about Ferrari vs. Porsche.

Re: Top Gear: Aston V8 beats 997S at the Ring...

ferrari hooligan vs porsche hooligan!!!? ahhahahhah

and i am the player!! i don care what brand they are , as long as i enjoy the g force !

Lots of wannabes in SD.....perhaps more balanced perspectives come from those who can get any cars they want and tend to choose cars based on what they favor for various driving situations, rather than merely trying to advertise their purported net worth to anonymous guys in minivans (sorry, SUVs) at stoplights/on fwys.....and I suspect that, given how back-office/retirement-oriented SD/LaJolla is, even a new Vette w/a balding, Viagra-loaded fogey would prob be overkill to impress the few hotties left in SD who've yet to migrate to LA/LV for their "modeling" career.....

Re: Top Gear: Aston V8 beats 997S at the Ring...

Aw, give nberry a break. If we all thought exactly alike the world would be so boring (and possibly, also sobering) :-).

Besides, he's an equal-opportunity offender, on ferrarichat, rennlist, 6speed...so at least he's consistent.

With respect root61, of course it is o.k for people to think different. That's what makes the world go-round, however if you look at nberrys history of threads and responses, anybody can see the hostile slant and obvious disdain he has for P AND the people on this site! We can all be happily chugging along on a multi-page topic, when WHAM, comes this [censored] to throw everyone off topic and inflame the members, for no apparent reason other than to [censored] people off. So, please tell why nberry needs "a break"? It is not constructive conversation. It is openly juvenile, and it shows lack of respect and general disregard for the members and moderators.
