Re: Maserati Gran Turismo Spyder Mules

Ack! I dont' do that often I promise

Re: Maserati Gran Turismo Spyder Mules

It will look good as a cabrio.

Re: Maserati Gran Turismo Spyder Mules

I don't think we'll see this car materialise. From a quick comparison of the roof (shutlines, panel depths) and the glass house (location of rear quarter light window) I'd suspect that this is the car that became the California.

Re: Maserati Gran Turismo Spyder Mules

I think It just serves to prove how little Ferrari actually is in the new California.
And I do hope we see this Maser cabrio.
It will carry the image better than Cali IMO...

Re: Maserati Gran Turismo Spyder Mules

Check the door handle, it's a completely different car.
I doubt it's a Scud mule we're looking at on those pics.

I guess you meant California mule.

BTW, there will be a Spyder version of the GranTurismo for sure.

The Massi and Cali will be sharing the same architecture and mechanism for the roof. Much cheaper than both small manufacturers developing their own. Like I have said in the past the Gran Turismo Spyder will be a California for people not concerned with brands and don't want to pay a 20-30k markup on a car.

A slippery slope where the manufacturer saves a LOT of money and customers get mediocre cars.

The outgoing CEO Roberto Ronchi said the GT convertible will have a soft top and be a four seater. There is no way the GT could have a folding hard top, retain it's usable rear seats and have luggage space in the trunk. I own a GT and the trunk is tiny even on the coupe. Ferrari have gone on record saying that the folding roof mechanism caused packaging challenges for Pinifarina as the car had to have trunk space with the roof down. The result is the high tail which they have tried to disguise with the stepped side swage line, the stacked rear exhausts and the full width dark panel between the lower lights. The Maserati would also not be able to share that roof as it is designed to cover a much shorter 2+2 cabin. If you look at the Autogespot pics you'll see that at least 30cm of bodywork has been chopped from the wheelbase behind the doors of that development car when compared to a GranTurismo coupe. That's a lot of extra roof to find a home for in the trunk and would necessitate either a 3rd section being added to the folding mechanism making the roof unsightly, and the depth for storage even greater, or a very long trunk lid to close over it.

Maserati had been developing a new sports car to replace the 4200 coupe and spider and I believe the pics on Autogespot are that car. When Fiat took the decision to move Maserati out of Ferrari's control and group it alongside Alfa Romeo back within the Fiat Auto group Ferrari took this model by way of a golden handshake and turned it into the California. As the car was engineered to use the V8 engine which comes from Ferrari this would not have been a difficult project for them to re-engineer to their own spec's.

The GranTurismo convertible will most likely end up looking something like this rendering.

That might be the case. I found these two images which indicated that Maserati will be compensate form for function in order to maintain the car as an alternative to the spacious Bentley GTC. The end result will be interesting since there's no single four door CC on the market that has a beautiful silhouette when the roof is up.

Re: Maserati Gran Turismo Spyder Mules

The worldcarfans shots are fairly old pics. The car in those shots is much shorter with a lower a bonnet line than a GranTurismo so can be ruled out as a GT convertible. It looks more likely to be a forerunner engineering prototype of the car on Autogespot.
