Re: A Porsche in the USA ?

Isn't there a country that puts you in front of a firing squad if you drive drunk? Not a bad idea IMHO.

What's your source for this conclusion?

There was an article a few years back in C&D about the effects of the 'Montanabahn' on traffic accidents and deaths. One thing for sure...people came from all around to drive fast and this is why the law was changed after 3 or 4 years putting speed limits back in effect.

Re: A Porsche in the USA ?

It is so funny to read through everyone's very unique advice. So here is mine...

If you are use to driving in Switzerland then things aren't a lot different here. The big exception is that photo tickets are very rare here. Getting stopped for big speeds will get you into big trouble just like in Switzerland. Passing people very quickly will [censored] them off and maybe make them make a cell phone call .. just like Switzerland.

The exception is that the USA has the rule of man. Dealing with things here requires being "connected". Cops don't give other cops tickets, etc.

Driving competence in Switzerland isn't as good as some of the neighbours but it is a lot better than here. Ultimately, the problem here is not the cops but the fellow drivers. You need to be sooo careful around them. You will regularly have people violating your right of way. Treat it like a third-world country in that respect.

About the only place you can really drive is in some wilderness areas (maybe a little of Northen New England, the north of Canada and the west). But never on a highway anywhere. You can have some fun on Rockie mountain passes where you can never build any real speed.

There are far fewer passing areas so expect to get stuck behind cars all of the time. This is one way that speed is regulated. Unlike Switzerland, people will pass on a solid line here. In Boston and surrounding areas people will run red lights too.

Ultimately, my advice is to sell the Porsche and buy a Smart or similar. The game is over.

That's because you were driving on the wrong side of the road!

Seriously they drive a lot faster over there (80 mph + is OK on motorways), but I wouldn't say they were maniacs or bad drivers compared to the majority of Americans who seem to think that they are driving a McDonalds on wheels.

Running red lights is a big problem all over the country. Just remember when the light turns green, wait a few seconds, then proceed. I think that why they are placing red light cameras in many areas.

Actually, I think it is easier to drive here (other than Boston ) than anywhere else in the world, just DO NOT cutoff anyone. Americans actually will stay in their lanes and in some states like California, we even mark our lanes with little bumps and reflectors. After speeding tickets, probably unsafe lane changes are what cops ticket the most. Out on the highways, American highways are the same as European highways except that slow Americans tend to stay in the left lane.

They can drive faster on the motorways b/c they have higher speed limits then we do ! But I didn't have any problems on their motorways (in fact they are probably better in that respect because they seem to respect the passing lanes and such). Where I was surprised was on their country roads. They have some really narrow roads (and the fact that my rental was a Mercedes E-class didn't help ) and that's where I thought they acted a little reckless. (As an example... on two occasions I was passed by guys on crotch-rockets while going around a blind corner.) And yes I was on the right side of the road (the wrong side lmao). I'm also glad that we don't have traffic cameras over here (cops are one thing, but those cameras are just annoying).

This has got to be a really big problem in Connecticut. Not unusual at all to see people go through a few seconds after red. If I am first in the cue to enter an intersection I will look very carefully left and right before I go. Many times I have to wait.

Re: A Porsche in the USA ?

Thank you Stephen for the profound answer. It is a little bit frustrating but I am not giving up. I will certainly buy a Porsche again. ( not to forget with this exchange rate now )
I will just change my driving patterns and go on the racetrack from time to time. Anyhow I will be in Europe 4 times a year. Perhaps one day I leave a little toy here at my parents house.
Again thank you for the advice.
