....I like this part (I am biased)

"We also sampled a relatively basic standard 911 Turbo with steel brakes. To be perfectly honest, it felt pretty much exactly like a Turbo S - same runaway acceleration, same astonishing grip and traction, same terrific balance on the circuit and similar glimmers of outright brilliance on the road. The steel brakes were also superb and stood up to six laps of Bilster Berg (the launch’s circuit venue) at full speed with no issues at all. Our hunch is that a standard Turbo without PDCC could be the one to have"

That is in line with Walter Röhrls recent statement at Bilster Berg, while driving the Turbo:

"It is not really noticeable, I have honestly to admit, it's different at a car with 100 or 140 hp, but between 520 and 560 hp it's not neccessarily noticeable."

Re: OFFICIAL: 991 Turbo and Turbo S

There should be no turbo and turbo S. There should be only one priced somewhere in between and with PCCB and all sport gimmicks standard.

Yes, Turbo has only 7% less rated power (maybe there is a bigger difference with overvboost?).  That is a small difference, equivalent to changing 2,000 ft in elevation above sea level (I do that every few minutes in the mountains here and the difference is not huge).

Changing 10,000 ft is huge and very noticeable though Smiley

Does that make any difference on these modern turbos with their "load target" programs, I thought they would more or less maintain their rated hp at all elevations Smiley

Having an atmospheric Standart pressure of about 643 hp at 10 000ft, i am pretty sur those Turbos cant compensate the loss of atmespheric pressure at this altitude.

    1.  Whilst the system will always try to achieve the set boost pressure, the efficiency of turbochargers is reduced as their inlet air pressure (ambient atmospheric pressure) falls, at the expense of performance.
    2. If the maximum system pressure prescribed by the control unit is set as a boost pressure above atmospheric pressure (as boost gauge displays would suggest and as I believe it is, but don't know for sure) as opposed to an absolute pressure above zero, then the air mass flow at max boost will be lower at high altitudes than at sea level even if the turbos are capable of achieving max boost.

My comments were intended to reflect the perceived change in power by changing 2,000 ft in a Normally Aspirated car.  The 991TT will lose very little power in such an ascent.  Sorry for the confusion...

Porsche does use absolute pressure for its boost target, not a set amount of boost over atmosperic pressure, so it does quite well at moderate altitudes (though lag is increased).

Re: OFFICIAL: 991 Turbo and Turbo S

A few comments regarding the Turbo and Turbo S:

    1. The Turbo S costs only 3-4k more than a Turbo with the same options but you get 40 hp more, a better sound from the interior, the Turbo S logos and a slightly sportier Sport Chrono setup (shifting, suspension, steering,etc.).

    2. The Turbo's sound symposer is programmed to be slightly muted in the upper rev range vs the Turbo S,

    3. The 40 hp difference give you a 2-3 seconds advantage from 0-300 kph, something which may not be important for speed limited countries but keep in mind that even the 30 hp difference between the old 997 Turbo and Turbo S was sometimes noticeable in real life driving situations. This isn't about straightline performance only.

    4. What do you expect Walter Röhrl to say at a Porsche press event? He works for Porsche an they want to sell Turbos without the S too.

    5. The reasons why the 991 Turbo models became more expensive are the AWS and the wider body. There was a suggestion from marketing to make AWS optional but this wouldj have required a completly new chassis/PTM/steering setup, complicating things further and actually raising development cost.

    6. The advantages of PCCB are not really the ones described by many car journalists (durability and firm brake feel after some hot track rounds). Braking point precision, high speed brake performance and durability, etc. and of course the cleaner rims and good looks. Of course the standard brake is quite capable but PCCB is a notch better in many regards.

Getting a standard Turbo over the Turbo S makes only sense if you order a Turbo with Sport Chrono (MUST HAVE option) only and leave everything else away, to get a substantial price advantage, Or you live in a region with high car taxes.

I wish... (funny license plate though...458).

I am at the beach right now and cannot really recognize the color (I see grey only) on my iPad mini display due to the bright sun but I made a screenshot and will look at it later on.

All cars you are seeing right now are factory and press cars. The delivery embargo has been recently confirmed again, no customer car is supposed to be delivered until (incl.) October 5th. Porsche apparently fines dealers who do not respect the delivery embargo.

First customer cars will be delivered Oct. 6th (Sunday), my car on Oct. 7th (Monday) since this is the first possible day for registration in Germany. My car exits production on Sept. 27th, so it should be at the dealership latest Oct. 2nd. Of course I am going to visit the car and look at it but no license plates until Oct. 7th.. Smiley

I am planning to do a short Lake Garda (North Italy) trip with my son in my new Turbo S the following weekend after taking delivery, if the weather permits and I plan to take lots of nice photos during that trip. If the weather is bad (rain), I am going to visit the Porsche museum in Zuffenhausen, my son loves it there.

The Turbo S rims look better live than on photos but I think that, in the end, I will get them painted in matte black. There is actually some black paint on them, it is difficult to observe on photos but this isn't enough. I will probably get the same rims for my winter tires, so maybe I try the matte black for them first and if I like it...
