Re: Walter Röhrl competes in the Nürburgring 24 Hour Race - GT3RS

"FIRST TEST IN THE GT3 RS RACE CAR" by Chris Harris

    (22 March 2010)

Friday was destination Nurburgring for the official VLN (Veranstaltergemeinschaft Langstreckenpokal Nürburgring Association of Nürburgring Endurance Cup Organisers) test day. This is the 10 event race series that runs throughout the 2010 season, and Porsche has chosen to run in two of the three races before the 24hrs on 15 May. They’re both 4hr events and will provide vital test time for car and drivers.

Being inherently mean, I’ll always blag a lift if possible, and seeing as my team-mates (assuming they let me back in their Cup car once the GT3 RS 24hr project is over…) Chris Cooper and Guy Spurr were heading over in Guys Panamera Turbo. This proved to be possibly the best way to travel to the ‘Ring, even if it feels pretty unnerving from the back seat under full-afterburner.

Chris Harris - FIRST TEST IN THE GT3 RS RACE CAR - 01.jpg

Woke early Saturday am in one of the new Hotels - which had a bizarre ‘Rock am Ring’ theme, complete with cod-lighting rig dangling from the ceiling - to a typical miserable Eiffel morning. Note pre-prod RS in the pic...

Chris Harris - FIRST TEST IN THE GT3 RS RACE CAR - 02.jpg

Fairly daunting first few hours at the circuit. I’ve been here enough times to understand all the procedures, and know enough people for it to always be a sociable experience, but the sheer size and professionalism of the Porsche presence was a little disconcerting for a hick like me used to running with his mates in, er, more modest surroundings. There were four Porsche Motorsport trucks.

Met Roland Asch first, ex-DTM legend and Dirk Schoysman’s teammate for several years in the Falken Skyline. His English is even worse than my German, which means we’ll be communicating through semaphore and air-steering-wheel. He’s also naffing quick, and managed some dry running in the car the day before and declared it : “Fantastisch!!”. He and Horst are always smiling, which I like – even if I rarely do the same myself. This is Horst getting comfy.

Chris Harris - FIRST TEST IN THE GT3 RS RACE CAR - 03.jpg

The car shares a Box with the 911R Hybrid, a Manthey Cup car and the No.1 Manthey GT3 R. Even in plain white, it doesn’t look completely undernourished, but then again those wide-bodied racers do give me the horn. And now to answer the most commonly asked question, and the one I think will keep coming for a few months yet: “Is it really a standard car?”

    Yes, it is.

The car is actually a pre-series Gen.2 997 GT3 RS- a test car effectively. It had done a few thousand kms on various track and road outings before being changed into a race car. I say ‘changed’, what I mean is ‘altered to comply with the regulations required to race in the ‘Ring 24hrs’. First, it needs a bag tank, which it now has. This requires a new fuel supply system, which comes from the RSR. The car runs a completely standard engine, but the spring rates have been slightly changed to run with a slick tyre –again compulsory for the race- but the PASM dampers remain unchanged.

Chris Harris - FIRST TEST IN THE GT3 RS RACE CAR - 04.jpg

I ran five wet laps and thought it was pretty remarkable. What it loses to the hordes of GT3 Cup racers from 40-120km/h (they have much shorter gearing and flat up-shifts) it seems to claw back above that speed. The steering’s way nicer than the Cup car’s electric assisted system and has far more lock. Not that you need it in the wet, because the traction control has been re-calibrated to work with the slick and the wet tyre. I’ve never driven a race car here with electronic-drift-assistance: have to say it’s rather pleasant!

Typically, the track was a war-zone, wet everywhere with oil in at least five places, so the times didn’t mean anything. But the car gives you immense confidence in those conditions, and that bodes very well for it as a 24hr competitor.

First race is next weekend. Will keep you posted.

Re: Walter Röhrl competes in the Nürburgring 24 Hour Race - GT3RS (Chris Harris)

What is Porsche's ambition with this GT3R Hybrid at NBR? The car cannot win or get a decent position and it is outside the rules anyway, I think. At best it will finish the race, somewhere.

So, is it just a publicity stunt or it serves some other purpose

Test bed (rolling lab) for future Hybrid race cars. (likely LMP1)

Hartmut Kristen has apparently said something along these lines when questioned about the LMP entry for Le Mans:

"It is not a matter of yes or no. It is a matter of when and how".

Why shouldn´t it be possible to win with this car? First of all, the weight penalty is not that significant and one has to remember that the cars in VLN/24h have to meet a certain minimal weight. It shouldn´t be a problem for Porsche to incorporate the technology within this weight limits, their placement in the car will only improve weight distribution on the rear-engined 911.

Heinz-Harald Frentzen (former DTM and F1 driver) entered the 24h race with a hybrid Gumpert Apollo two years ago and after all had difficulties with the combustion engine or, more precisely, its gearbox which repeatedly broke. The car was able to pull itself into the pits on the electric engine only. There are classes for alternative fuels and technologies so, in fact, the 24h race at the Nürburgring offers a playground like no other racing series so far.

Thanks! The car makes more sense now.

If they win something it will be a major coup for the new hybrid image of Porsche.

Project Nurburgring 24hr endurance race 2010...

    2010-Porsche-GT3-RS_Nurburgring-24hr_Sport-Auto_20b.jpg

Race car conversion: Porsche 911 GT3 RS

The sacred in the halls of the Weissach Motorsports Centre currently on the 24-hour adventure in May prepared 911 GT3 RS will get top-class support: with him at the launch a hybrid version based on the new GT3 R.

There is no need of two additional electric motors at the front axle, (via gear pairs and multi-plate clutches produce an additional output of 160 hp or good and happy working as a generator during braking) are still one in a fast-rotating vacuum 40,000/min, football-energy storage next to the driver's seat. Even on a highly complex power electronics could be dispensed with.

The measures put our car on a promising path to the 24-hour race at the Nurburgring on 15/16. Leave in May 2010 a statement in terms of sporting greatness, were significantly less complicated, not to say that a child's play compared to the new hybrid project that Porsche in terms of perhaps the most famous, but certainly the busiest and toughest endurance race in the world from the hat has conjured up.

Porsche 911 GT3 is sending two cars on base at the start

On the one hand, therefore, the spectacular and technically extremely demanding Porsche 911 GT3-R hybrid model, which under the new slogan "Intelligent Performance Porsche" the future ability and technical leadership of the brand and emphasize the hybrid technology will pave the way sports. And on the other side, next to high-end racer also marked as the work used in combination with sport auto-deployed, as well as standard GT3 RS, which should undoubtedly take for himself as a street-sports car claimed to be the greatest possible proximity to the racing.

This alliance is a certain logic, but it is evidence of a constructive and non-dogmatic discussion of the, as far as new technologies. And so, without being subject to the basic conservative ideas, the sports and racing cars in the future always and everywhere, even only partially put into question. The motto applies to all: Who is in front, is right, but only those who can more wins. The inflexible laws of both speed and efficiency and stamina rewarding long-distance arrangements are likely to oppose in the VLN races in the run up to the 24h-race galloping GT3 versions should not be underestimated recipe - of course each in its own way.

    Hybrid model with additional power

It consists in the possibility of hybrid GT3 R, such as upcoming overtaking the short term - a maximum length of up to seven seconds - Cristal are able to get extra power, or alternatively, turn the control electronics to optimize consumption, are on the GT3 RS is a comparatively simple levers, which help him to be opportunity to extend range. But before the dynamic in his genes can still be salvaged at a tiny fraction Renntalent encrypted, it is said also to him at first to comply with the regulations.

Porsche 911 GT3 RS slimming starting at 1,350 pounds

This includes the extension of the first in the series usually on the back of limited safety cage to form a stable pipe works forward. The bought-by Semcon steel structure is about twice as heavy, with about 35 kilograms as the "half" cage before. The 20-liter auxiliary fuel tank, which extends the total fuel supply to the allowed 110 litres, and will allow at least two extra laps, when inevitably carries with slightly negative weight on the balance of the 24-vehicle use. 1350 pounds are still considered a target. The racing shell out of the Cup is also a model, albeit neutral weight requirement of the regulations, as well as the front passenger seat-mounted instead of the standard fire-fighting system.

Base brake system with steel plates instead of ceramic disks

The GT3 RS has registration “SGO 2400”, as significantly, the mark of the red and white racing talent that is otherwise all the natural offspring exhibit evidence of a Series: steering wheel, dashboard, door panels, interior carpet, and - in turn a mandatory requirement of the regulations text - is the foundation brake system with steel plates. Ceramic discs are not allowed to sincerely regret that the responsible engineers behind the GT3 RS, Andreas Preuninger and Karsten Schebsdat: "We would like to show that the approximately 20 kilograms lighter offers ceramic brakes on long-haul real benefits."

Ensure a dynamic cornering light replaces the auxiliary lights. And for sustained good visibility there is a heated windshield, as it is also used in the RSR. The rear side windows and rear window are standard equipment in any case made of polycarbonate.

Not surprisingly the most crucial change concerns the tire and hence the central catch rims correctly (the painted red) are overseen by the GT3 Cup. The indispensable for a veritable racing slicks and rain tires come from Michelin. They are available 18-inch dimension in the rolling circumference due to the higher flanks slightly larger than the standard 19-inch model - which is why marginal flaring work are required on the rear fender edges - exhibit at the rear but also significantly narrower run spread: 270mm instead of as in the Series 315 millimetres.

Testing for the connection of ABS and traction control systems

After receiving the perfect balance of driving dynamics will be much of the remaining test program will be devoted, as are the sensitive adaptation of ABS and traction control systems to the new tire combinations on the part of participating Bosch Engineering GmbH.

The areas remain the engine, transmission, chassis, body and aerodynamics untouched - and for one simple reason: they are hard to improve their efficiency. Okay: spring rates must be increased because of higher cambers perhaps something else. The two hoods still require quick. Finally, the use of will discuss new from Porsche Exclusive offer, only six kilogram lithium-ion rechargeable battery - but that's was already.

Exciting start to VLN with three-manufacturers on the podium at the Nurburgring...

His work-mate driver Lieb added, apparently "also has the new 911 GT3 R, the legendary reliability of any race Elfer inherited."

Porsche GT3 R Hybrid with promising debut

In addition to the GT3 R with Porsche support, the team is also a hybrid variant of the 911 that stores energy recovered during braking in an electric flywheel. On his race debut of the Porsche race around factory driver Lietz, Bergmeister and Ragginger the hybrid model to sixth place in the overall standings. "I am working very positively surprised how good our car is already in his first race has," Bergemeister draws a positive conclusion. "We have tried many things still in the race and the hybrid drive to a 24-hour race in May to develop more intensively. Our goal is to achieve the same performance by consuming less than our competitors," said Lietz.

Porsche 911 GT3 RS sensational success

This year's sports car with the 24h race with a series GT3 RS at the start. In addition, the double world rally champion Walter Röhrl in the vehicle, his racing comeback after 17 years break. "The car has exceeded my wildest expectations and I had lots of fun at the wheel," says Röhrl after the first practice test with the car and a 22nd finish. "We were able to keep up with a lot of thoroughbred racing cars. Especially in high speed corners and under braking, the 911 GT3 RS was sensational. And the best thing is: I had the road not far tonight, I could screw our number plates back to the car and easily drive up to Regensburg.

The second round of the VLN Endurance Championship will be held on 10 April 2010.

Porsche is considering running the the GT3 R Hybrid in a few ALMS races this year if allowed by the rules.

VLN RACE ONE IN THE 997 GT3 RS, WITH WALTER ROHRL...

Article by Chris Harris, Evo magazine

    12700205732631.jpg

    (30 March 2010)

So, race one is completed, and the car is still in one piece. It sounds odd to consider such low-level achievement as a great result, but this weekend was all about seat-time, gremlin-hunting and not, emphatically not, sending the car into the wall at Breidscheid.

The weather over here is unpredictable at the best of times, but at this time of year it’s mostly terrible and so we only ran a couple of wet laps during Friday practice. Our race engineer was the legendary Roland Kussmaul, who masterminded Porsche's dominance of sportscar racing in the 80s. In fact he's such a legend that I'm not going to say any more about him here because he needs a blog of his own - to come later this week.

Anyways, Walter went out on an exploratory mission early in qualifying on Saturday morning, but it was the usual mayhem with wet/dry/shunts/general insanity.

    12700205935512.jpg

The best traction and stability control system ever invented: Herr Rohrl.

In a VLN event, all three drivers must complete a lap to qualify for the race, so once Walter was done, I did one lap, then Horst von Saurma followed. Simple stuff, but even with no desire to qualify in any particular position, we still need to know what’s possible with the car. So, on a drying track, with some damp patches, Walter went out on slicks and did 9 min 17sec, which was pretty stunning given the circumstances and the type of car. The VLN lap is around 1min 40sec to 1min 50sec longer than the Nordscleife lap. It gave us 30th on the grid.

    12700206057583.jpg

    Achtung! Vorsicht!

I’ve never seen so many very, very fast cars here. There are two works BMW M3s, four Audi R8 LMSs, two GT3 Cups S, several RSRs (still the sexiest racers on the planet), the stunning GT3 Rs (making their debut) and then there’s the long list of special, fast racing cars, from Corvette to Viper to Ferrari 430 GT2s – the list goes on-and-on. Oh, and there were 22 Porsche 997 GT3 Cup racing cars too. In light of which, 30th was fine by me!

The race itself was dry, and I’m delighted to be able to say that there is nothing much to report. Horst took the start and worked us up to 26th, Walter ran with spooky consistency to 24th position, and when I crossed the line we were 22nd overall.

Behind the Manthey GT3 R, which won the race

The car is a complete honey. It’s far less physical than the Cup car I used to drive, it feels less precise and lazier in direction changes than the racer, but the big surprise comes at high speed. It doesn’t have anything like the wing of the Cup car, but the stability is superb, and there’s a hint of downforce too: something I hadn’t expected.

    12700206347995.jpg

Look, it's even got red wheels now!

One day, when I’m old and weeing through a tube, someone might ask me to recount a memory that I’ve always cherished. Having Walter Rohrl step out of a racing car, then lean towards me to deliver some advice, and be bolted into the same seat he vacated will probably be near the top of the list.

I don’t ever want to come down from this trip. Honestly – I don’t.

    Next-up: VLN 2 in 10 days time...

I hear the Hybrid came third over the weekend.  That is pretty impressive.  Can I ask how the series works?  How many races?  All at the Ring with the final one being the 24 hrs?  Is there an English site with detail results etc?  I would love to see how the two (very quick) journalists compare to the master himself.

The 24h race does [currently] not belong to the VLN point system and, being usually held in early Summer, is succeeded by the majority of VLN races each season. The scoring system is based on the number of participants per class as well and therefore honours more competition. Apart from the regular classifications alternative fuels and drivetrains are allowed as well. More info here.

Due to the long distances incl. the GP track tire and fuel consumption is a key element as you can pit only every 25 kms, especially in those long-distance races. I assume that the additional weight of the GT3 Hybrid can be compensated by the driven front wheels and the resulting advantages as I don´t believe that Porsche has already shown the car´s full potential in those preparing races.

Ferdie:. ....... I don´t believe that Porsche has already shown the car´s full potential in those preparing races.

I certainly hope not. They are about 8 seconds off the two top times (racing lap times)
