WHAT does Porsche do to the car in PDI ?

    Just curious if anyone knows...

Re: WHAT does Porsche do to the car in PDI ?

I suspect not much. I hear they often do not catch problems (such as suspensions/rollbars not tightened right) that they should clearly correct. Like anything, it is a management issue - if the dealer's service manager sets the right tone, things are done right, otherwise they are not.

Re: WHAT does Porsche do to the car in PDI ?

hah apparently the PDI missed checking the alignment on nearly every GT3 that came into the USA...

Re: WHAT does Porsche do to the car in PDI ?

Judging from the short time most Porches spend in PDI at the port, I think they must mainly check for superficial damage and repair as necessary. The PDI at the dealer should be more stringent, and as Moogle suggests, it likely varies from dealership to dealership.

Re: WHAT does Porsche do to the car in PDI ?

I had to point out the air con not working after my rigorous dealer inspection

Re: WHAT does Porsche do to the car in PDI ?

The port PDI is more paper work and visual inspection. They gather up and place into the cars Manuals, Monroney label (Window Sticker) license plate holders and Std Floor Mats.

The real PDI is done at the dealers where they do a computer "hand-off with their PIWIS computer that runs a diagnostic as well. They also remove the shipping blocks from the front springs, lower the tire pressure from the shipping pressure, check wheel torque and fluids and a visual inspection as well.

Re: WHAT does Porsche do to the car in PDI ?

indeed, the 'check' at the port is mostly for damage incurred during shipping.

many car companies even have facilities at the ports designed specifically for covering up ... erm i mean, repairing, the damage cars may have had during shipping

i know some peolpe that worked at a place like that for BMW, you'd be amazed at some of the things that happen to the cars.

interesting also is the fact that most of the times the customer is never informed of the damage, big or small (as long as it is within a certain tolerance).

Are dealers drilling front license plate holes??? I don't

Presumably you've told your dealer you don't want front plate holder drilled in at dealer. At least for CA, it seems that P doesn't drill front bumper of 997 at port for the plate....

What amazes me is that my 997S was built in Oct and sat for 3 wks waiting to be placed on a US-bound boat. My 996TTS was built in mid-Nov and sat for 6 wks waiting to be placed on a boat. Allegedly, P is world's most profitable car maker. Given their apparent inefficiencies in sending customer-ordered cars from factory to US customer to book revenues and profits in a time-efficient manner, makes me realize how generally incompetent are the management teams at every auto company.....some more than others

Re: WHAT does Porsche do to the car in PDI ?

    porsche runs SAP!

VKSF that is very interesting that your cars sat so long at the port

the most I've heard is 2-3 days sitting in germany port. sometimes they hitch a ride over with audi/VW shipments.

Re: Are dealers drilling front license plate holes??? I don't

My Baltimore port 997 wasn't drilled either.
    And still isn't.
Not that I had even thought about it. My dealer assumed that I didn't want a front plate and left all the bits in the trunk.

New law in CA makes it illegal for a new car dealer to deliver a new car without a front license plate bracket.

Re: Are dealers drilling front license plate holes??? I don't

    1) Porsche PDI is minimal, but they'll check the invoice against the car to see if all options are on the car, color is right, etc. They will also inspect for basic body damage that may have occured in transit, and will repair. If repaired, a notice is supposed to be sent to the selling dealer.

They will also prepare proper customs paperwork and finalize invoice to dealer, and arrange transport if possible.

    2) CA and other states are getting tough on dealers if front plates are required, and many dealers are cooperating in drilling out the bumper of every vehicle. Of course, we are supplying these dealers with the proper drilling equipment , and the necessary ORIGINAL Bumper Plugs for Porsche cars for the owner to use at a later time, should such owner decide to dismount the front plate.

Is that a new one for 2005?

Not true, here is what the law says:

A new state law that took effect Saturday requires dealers to tell people buying vehicles without front license mounts about the state rule.

Customers who don't want the dealer to install the mount must sign a waiver acknowledging they were warned.

The new law, as it was originally proposed, would have required front plate mounts on every new vehicle, but car dealer lobbyists convinced lawmakers to water down the legislation.

"Why should we whip out our Black & Decker when the consumer doesn't want to drill holes in the thing?' asked Brian Maas, the director of government affairs for the California Motor Car Dealers Association. "It's their individual responsibility and their decision

The California Highway Patrol cited 123,544 drivers between 2000 and 2003 for not having a front license plate.
