    Carrera GT-Geneva

An exciting day at the Porsche stand. Fortunately I brought my Allocation/Dealer Commitment Form showing I am to receive the first allocated Carrera GT from my dealer. The car was in a roped off area of the Porsche stand. Admittance to the area was restricted. Upon showing my form, great things happened. I was admitted, introduced to the team who had developed the Carrera GT, and spent two hours with various people, including Doctor Wiederkin (sp.?). Michael Holscher, who led the overall development of the car, was very informative, very relaxed, and explained a great amount about the car. The designer of the car, Grant Larson, also was very interesting. I also met the engine designer, who in great detail described the development of the two small ceramic clutch plates, which allows the engine to be placed lower in the car. I can answer the question regarding the wooden gearshift handle. Oona Scheepers, who did all of the interior and some of the engine compartment design, said someone in Porsche wanted to have a detail from the 917 Porsche. The wooden gearshift is the result. It really doesn't work in the car. It is out of place and doesn't fit with such a contemporary automobile. Oona asked if there was anything in the car I would change and with out a moments hesitation, I suggested an option of a knob that fits in with the balance of the interior - leather, magnesium, or carbon fiber. Actually, I can't remember all of the people who were available to discuss the car with me. I was able to put the panels on the roof. They are so light and easy to place it will be a cinch to take them on and off. On display was an entire underbody panel of carbon fiber. Also there was a stripped body showing all of the carbon fiber. The seating position and placement of the gearshift lever was perfect for me - I am 5'10". After being asked what I might change, I continued to look at the car with a critical eye. I couldn't find anything other than the knob. The attention to detail is unbelieveable. A very exciting automobile.

    Thanks for the report Larry,
    You are a lucky bas.......d!!!!!!!!
    Take care and enjoy Switzerland!
    Fanch.
PS: I haven't seen the car in the flesh but I agree with you about the wooden gear shift lever although I do appreciate the historic connotation with the 917.

    Re: Carrera GT-Geneva

Thanks for sharing, Larry, that must have been a wonderful experience. I don't know how you will contain yourself waiting for your very own to be delivered.

    Re: Carrera GT-Geneva

Thanks for sharing, must have been great to see the car and talk to the ones who made it, seems more like a dream than reality. Congrats and keep sharing this unique and wonderful experience you are living.

    Re: Carrera GT-Geneva

Thanks for sharing Larry. Make sue you take some pictures and shre them with us .

    Some Photos from Geneva today..

I attended the Geneva Auto Show today as part of the Porsche Travel Club program which gets you in on a Press Day plus gets you conversation/dinner/drinks/booth-tour with a bunch of Porsche designers and other manangers (many of the same folks that you mentioned, Larry).

I took a bunch of photos with a film camera, but knowing that those won't be developed for awhile, I also snapped some with a cheap/old digital. Here's the link to the "Gallery" (be warned it's more than just Porsches):

Enjoy! (I did!).. I tried to make the image names descriptive, but feel free to ask if something doesn't make sense.

Has Porsche set the price of the GT? They often quote

$350,000-400,000. Just exactly what is the problem in pricing it?

Re: Has Porsche set the price of the GT? They often quote

My speculation: Porsche, in deciding how many CGT's to produce, is unsure of price because they must turn a profit from this project. The more that are built, the lower the price will be, and vice versa. I recall the projected price of the car being under $300k when the concept was first presented.

The website mentions USD 440'000 and EUR 390'000 (without taxes).

    Re: Carrera GT-Geneva

    Pierre,

I downloaded your photos but all I got was the "Ferrari owners Screen Saver" program.

Where are the photo's of the Carrera GT?

    You're kidding, aren't you?...
If not, could you please tell me what you did with the file you downloaded? The correct way to get to the pics is to download the .zip-file, save it on your computer, and unzip it with WinZip or any similar software. The file contains about 60 pictures. And there's not the slightest trace of Ferrari in them!

Keep me informed, and I'll try to help you more if needed.

    Greetings,
