    GL 63 AMG

Say hello to the GL 63 AMG:

I actually wanted to translate the german press release but posting this link is easier Smiley:

    http://www.caranddriver.com/news/2013-mercedes-benz-gl63-amg-photos-and-info-news

No price tag announced yet but considering the power (same as ML 63 performance package), I guess beyond good and evil.

    Re: GL 63 AMG

I'm not sure I like it. The ML63 is ok because it goes against the X5/6M and the Cayenne Turbo, the sports suv is a market. And on the other end the G63 is crazy, bu then again the whole G lineup is crazy, that's what makes it great. But this is just too big to be performance. Idk to me it just doesn't make sense.

    Re: GL 63 AMG

I'd get the Benz G-class, but this thing has grown considerably.. going after the big SUVs in North America, Asia. Not a bad direction for it to go to.

This car makes a lot of sense. You would understand how much sense it makes if you have at least two or three kids. Smiley I always wondered why Mercedes doesn't offer a GL AMG version but luckily, they decided to build one.

I wouldn't buy it now, I need to see how the Panamera family car idea works out for me but a couple of years ago, I would have loved to have a powerful 7-seater with a huge luggage room.

    Re: GL 63 AMG

Well, sure when you put it that way. But (and i don't want put my nose in your familys privacy) but you only have two kids, I'd imagine that comparatively the ML would cover your needs. Than again I might still be in another frame of mind since kids are a long way down the road in my mind.

That or I just don't like big suvs all that much, a sportier smaller suv for me.

    Re: GL 63 AMG

What an obscure vehicle. I don´t even mind placing such a powerful engine in it but the mere suggestion that it carries a sporty intention is ridiculous.

I can see the attractively of the Q7 V12 or original AMG G-class, guess I am on the same page as Enmanuel, but to me this looks just hideous. AMG could´ve presented the car with a far more elegant styling, just as Audi does with their S and RS models.

    Re: GL 63 AMG

I suppose the new GL class is more intended for the US, Middle East and Asian markets...

In Germany, large SUVs seem to die a slow but steady death. Haven't seen a Q7 for some while and believe it or not, even the X5 seems to disappear slowly but steadily from the streets. I see tons of Q3, Q5, X1 and especially X3 though. Same goes to the GLK, which btw. is my son's(!) dream car when he gets his driver's license. No kidding, I don't know why but he really wants this car...but still has 8 more years to go until he can take his driver's license exam.  My daughter wants a Mini Cooper btw. Luckily for me, their "dream cars" seem kind of affordable. Especially used.

    Re: GL 63 AMG

Does anyone have the GL on the Forum?  I am curious to understand how it rides.  I lost my X5M in the hurricane and need to replace it.  My wife wants a larger car for two kids (and inevitable friends).  That is reality for us, so a big car makes sense.  Personally, I am glad they are putting an AMG engine in it.  I need to have some entertainment while driving on four hour drives.  We would not consider the G.  I have driven it, this car is interesting and unique but not for me for a number of reasons.  The GL actually has much better performance (straight line for all of this of course) b/c of its lower center of gravity.

Anyway, the point of the post is to ask if there are any owners of the new GL on the website.  I drove the GL450 today and it was soft and the steering was incredibly light.  I assume the 63AMG will be upgraded in this perspective.  But any insight (or insight to driving an ML63 AMG would be appreciated).  We are also looking at the new Range Rover - for some reason they will not put a third row of seats into Range Rover which is a problem for me as explained above. We are also looking at the land cruiser and some other big SUVs.

    Re: GL 63 AMG

    I think MikeS has one

Edit: My bad he has a G63 now that I think about it.

We had a GL450 as a loaner during our stay in Miami and you are right, the chassis is soft and the steering is light but considering the difference between a regular ML model and the ML63 AMG, I suppose the GL63 AMG should have a much firmer ride.

Sorry to hear about your X5M loss during the Hurricane but cars can be replaced and this is when insurances come in. Human life is a different thing...

My wife went the other way around now: We returned the X5M to the lease company and got her a smaller BMW X3 35d instead. German AMS magazine clocked this little puppy at 5.5 seconds from 0-62 mph, so this would probably mean 5.2 or 5.3 seconds from 0-60 mph. Not bad for a Diesel SUV. Smiley The parking lots over here in Germany are usually small and a smaller SUV is just perfect. Also, fuel (Diesel) consumption is aprox. 32-35 mpg...she loves her X3.

    Re: GL 63 AMG

Thanks i - yes, we are at that point in our lives where young kids (under 3) requires that we haul a lot of stuff around.  Trust me, I tried to see how many strollers I could stuff into the Panamera or the CLS AMG - haha.  wont work.

I think you are right about the AMG.  for me it is not too much about the pure horsepower as the extras you get with the suspension, tuning of the steering, brakes, etc.

As far as losing the X5M - you are absolutely right, it is purely material and insurance is there to cover these issues.  New York has been a mess and many loss items that were part of their memories and I feel for them.

While not important in the bigger picture I did get a little bit lucky - I place another post stating I moved my GT3RS 4.0 on Saturday by pure dumb luck (put it away for the winter upstate) as it was parked right next to the X5M and would been ruined had i not moved it.  As someone stated on the other post - God loves Porsches!
