    cross acceleration

    Gallardo: 1,3g
    911 Turbo: 1,3g

    Slalom 36m

    Gallardo: 131km/h / 18m: 68,2km/h

Re: Sport Auto Magazine 14 Nov.

It is important to mention that the Gallardo was equipped with the sport suspension, the 996 Turbo had the standard suspension. Both cars used standard street tires.

    Thomas.

Re: Sport Auto Magazine 14 Nov.

Very impressive test results. VERY impressive. I think I like the Gallardo more and more. There is a rumor that Audi/Lamborghini overworked the suspension system of the Gallardo after some serious complaints from journalists who testdrove the car. Seems that they did a good job.

    I'm confused

    Guys,

Does any one of you know exactly how such test figures are generated? The reason I'm asking is that I'm very confused here.

I agree that the Gallardo's numbers are very impressive but... How can the same magazine (which IMHO is one of the best German car magazines) publish numbers for the BMW M3 CSL that, at least in some categories, are significantly better?

Don't get me wrong! Since I have a CSL on order I'm certainly glad to see those numbers but frankly, this is VERY hard to believe, even for a biased CSL-waiter like me!

Here the comparison, including SportAuto's numbers for the CSL, published in their August 2003 edition:

    Nürburgring

    Gallardo: 7.52
    911Turbo: 7.56
CSL: 7.50 (faster then both the Supercars????)

    Hockenheim

    Gallardo: 1.11,8
    911 Turbo: 1.14,6
CSL: 1.13,5 (faster then the 996TT???)

    0-200-0

    Gallardo: 18,0
    911 Turbo: 19,8
    CSL: 21,4

    Cross acceleration

    Gallardo: 1,3g
    911 Turbo: 1,3g
    CSL: 1.4g (?????)

    Slalom 36m

    Gallardo: 131km/h / 18m: 68,2km/h
    911 Turbo: 128 km/h
CSL: 135 km/h (faster then both the Supercars????)

    Ausweichtest 110Meter

    Gallardo: 147 km/h
    911 Turbo: 139 km/h
    CSL: 157 km/h (REALLY????)

    Acceleration Gallardo:
    0-100: 4,0
    0-200: 13,0

    CSL:
    0-100: 4,8
    0-200: 16,7 (a little more realistic I think!)

I could see some of the differences coming from the fact that the CSL was equipped with Michelin Pilot Sport Cup while both the Gallardo and the 996TT ran on standard tires. However, IMHO the differences still look too 'good' to be true.

    Comments? Please!

    Gregor

    VERY VERY impressive!

Whatever one think about the Audi-Lamborghini Gallardo, but these figures are a real challenge for all its competitors!

    Re: I'm confused

    @Gregor

Sport Auto compared in their issue No. 7/ 2003 sport tyres on a 911 in Hockenheim. The dimension: 225/40 ZR 18 and 285/30/ZR 18.

Reference tyre: Continetal Sport Contact 2.

    Lap times:

    Continetal Sport Contact: 1.19,8
    Kumho V70A: 1.19,2
    Pirelli P Zero Corsa: 1.18,1
    Yokohama A 048: 1.17,9
    Michelin Pilot Sport CUP: 1.17,0

The Michelin Pilot Sport CUP has an advantage of 2,8 sec. in Hockenheim.

    Re: I'm confused

My advice would be to buy a normal M3 and put Michelin Cup Sport tires on it.
You would thereby get almost the same test numbers as the M3 CSL.

99% of all the readers of Sport Auto Magazine doesn't know the difference between an R tire and a normal one.

Sport Auto should be paid a percentage of the sales of the M3 CSL if you ask me.

absolutely true and you'd stil have A/C, a radio, etc. what a crock the CSL is, and what a farce for the magazines to be comparing a car running Rs with cars running ZRs.

Gregor, the semi-slicks/track tires are pretty good performers. The advantage on the Nuerburgring Nordschleife should be in the 10-16 seconds range, depending on the tire and car.
With standard street tires, the CSL would have probably performed numbers slightly above 8 minutes. Never underestimate the power of a good track tire, the differences compared to an ordinary street tire are sometimes dramatic.

I've just read that the outside temperature was only 8*C during the test. So the time is even more impressive, the Gallardo should be good for at least 7 min. 48 sec. or maybe less.

    well spoken!

some years ago sportauto was my car magazine of choice, but strange comparisons and features, overblown writing and many slips of the pen really annoyed me lately.
