    Quart of oil

I've got 1,600 on my 997S and lookslike I've burned thru a quart of oil. I just replenished but was wondering if this was normal for break-in?

    Thanks in advance

    Re: Quart of oil

    Yes. Just do not overfill.

    Re: Quart of oil

Normal. Mine has 2800 mi, and I've gone through 1.5 quarts.

    Re: Quart of oil

Looks to be the norm. I plan on asking my salesman for two quarts to take home when I pick up my baby tomorrow!

    Re: Quart of oil

I just ordered a 997S last Monday, Oct. 24, and asked the salesman about oil consumption. I'm not sure I got the straight line from him (given some of the comments I've seen on this site), but he claimed that there is always some consumption during the first 5,000 miles or 8,000 km, possibly several quarts or more.

    Does this sound accurate?

    Re: Quart of oil

thanks, after 1 1st qrt i added a second 1/2 qrt to get back to the top of the digital oil meter. should be good for a while

    Re: Quart of oil

Add one quart after 2500 miles. Only a half since then and I just turned 7k.

    Re: Quart of oil

I have added 2 quarts to mine in about 2600 miles.

    Re: Quart of oil

    My non scientific overview....
Oil consumption could be tied to how you accomplish break-in.

Lots of short duration trips in the first few thousand miles never really let the engine internals seat properly, and oil consumption will be higher.

My current '05 "S" now has 14,000 mi and I have used 1.5qt. My break-in was accomplished in a matter of days with a long haul road trip with high mileage stints of 5-700mi. Very rarely, if ever drive the car on a short, to the store type of journey.
The same held true with my '02 and in 36,000mi only used somthing like 3qt in that period.

Drive your cars...they will love you back

    Re: Quart of oil

Agree w/ Trundle... I've got a little over 2000 mi. and it doesn't need oil added. (2.5 weeks) Generally long trips.

Yeah lots of short trips will increase oil consumption BUT not maybe not necessarily for the reason you suggest, IMHO. Probably more likely that during warmup period oil is burned more readily. More warmup cycles means more oil burned.

I think, not a metalurgical expert, that short trips should be defined as ones where system does NOT reach operating temperature for a significant amount of time. I.e. 10 miles would be considered "short" 30 miles would be considered long enough. (arbitrary sounding, yes, but no one at Porsche has defined "short trips" as used in manual) I also "learned" it is important that the car have lots of stone-cold to operating temp to stone-cold cycles during breakin so as crankcase seasoning takes place (establishes it's memory) the other parts are still breaking in.

The way I understand it, a seasoned crankcase is much more stable (has well-established expansion-contraction memory) than a newly cast one.

Would be great if a team of Porsche Engineers could write the DEFINITIVE essay on the REALITIES of breakin in the engine. OF course what they say will probably totally upset the marketing/warrenty financial people in the company

    Re: Quart of oil

In my case, I seem to have used a bit more oil than others at 2 quarts in 2600 miles. The longest trip that I took in the car was about 200 miles and the shortest trip was probably about 30 miles. I purchased the car 8/13 so have had the car about 11 weeks. On average I probably take two to three trips a week so have taken about 30 trips which equates to about 85 miles per trip. I do agree with you, MMD, and have heard it from others that the seasoning effect of shorter trips is better for the engine (under 100 miles) than long trips or trips < 10- 20 miles. I intentionally broke my car in with the above in mind. I also did not follow the 4200 rpm rule albeit I was careful of sustained high rpm's and gradually increased rpm's from 4200 to red line over the first 2000 miles. I did take it to redline once or twice when the car was under 100 miles but just touching it in the first two or three gears.

I am very pleased with the performance of car and totally satisfied with all aspects although I wish I would have ordered TPMS, sport seats, short shift and auto dimming mirrors!!!
