Pics of Turbo's brake cooling system, and question for aero experts.

A recent discussion on 6speed prompted me to take pictures of the brake cooling system of the Turbo, as my car was on the lift getting "summer shoes" (yippee!!).

Below is pic of the front brake cooling system. It consists of 2 parts: a duct directing air from front of car to enter the wheel well, and a shield within the wheel well (which scrapes a lot and I, until now, thought it was some type of mud guard Smiley) that directs this air towards the brake.

My question is about the little lip that protrudes downward. Anyone would like to give an explanation for its function? My guess: The lip acts to slow down the high-velocity passing air flowing underneath the car, thereby preventing a lower pressure area existing underneath (by Bernoulli's principle) that would harmfully suck the directed air that way.
Clearly (?) the lip would create an area of turbulence to flow; I can't think of any other reason why you would want to do that in this area.

Am I way off or warm? I know it's a  minor point but now that I see it, I can't get it out of my mind. Smiley

Re: Pics of Turbo's brake cooling system, and question for aero experts.

I think it's to keep the blown air from the duct from contributing to flow under the remainder of the underside.  Is that what you're saying?  With the tire there, I think its directing the air around the wheel and wheel-well rather than under the car.

Likely complexities (I know nothing about) are involved as you mention - I think your on to it.

Does Porsche publish any measure of the effectiveness of this design?  Seems like I've seen fins like these independent of the cooling system that you have there.

With the aero design and measurement tools Porsche have, I would imagine this is pretty good for the cost of the material involved.

    great topic.

Hmm -- good point. Actually I was thinking the opposite (it's there to keep the air flowing in the underside from interfering with the brake cooling flow -- sucking this flow downward secondary to the neg pressure) but I see & understand your point.

I now see that there are in fact 2 lips, the other one is the one that scraped as I took my first Porsche ever (2005 997 C2) out of the dealership and almost gave me a heart attack. Smiley

I think it's more to do with reflecting the air from the duct to the disc, but it may be there to scoop up the air going under the car towards the disc to provide extra cooling.
