    Anyone have a perfect 997/S?

And I mean perfect - no check engine lights, no squeaks, rattles - just pure perfection.

Mention your build date as well. I'm seriously considering one, but the nearest Porsche dealer is 280 miles from me. So I want trips to the service department to be for scheduled maintenance only.

FWIW, my 2001 Boxster was absolutely perfect and along with my 2004 Range Rover (believe it or not) the best car I've ever owned.

Re: Anyone have a perfect 997/S?

My base has only 400 miles on it and so far, it's 100% perfect. I reserve the right to change my mind. After all, even a Ferrari will wait until there are more miles on the clock until it acts up

Re: Anyone have a perfect 997/S?

    Have 2K miles on my 997S to-date (1 month since delivered)...without any major/minor problems.....car is superb Oct 2004 build.

Re: Anyone have a perfect 997/S?

Two minor electrical problems that self corrected. Other than that it's been perfect and, I might add, the best Porsche I've ever driven.

Re: Anyone have a perfect 997/S?

Baboo - what's your build date? What were the 2 minor electrical problems that 'self-corrected'?

    Thanks,

I'm not sure of the build date but mine was #853 in build sequence.

When I first got the car my interior lights would not go out even though the switches were correct. They would go out after I locked the car. The problem self corrected after a few days. The other problem occured while I was cleaning the car. The passenger door was open and the radio came on without the key being in the ignition. The problem hasn't occured since.

Re: Anyone have a perfect 997/S?

Baboo - thanks for the reply - in case you're curious the build date (month/year) should be on the driver's door jam sticker - at least I remember it being there on my Boxster.

This is a big red flag I think. Just one medium-sized PITA new model problem means at least two or three (more?) unwanted round trips for you. I'd find something else to obsess on for a year.

Re: Anyone have a perfect 997/S?

    MMD - I'm afraid you're right . . . Wondering whether I should consider a new left-over 996 coupe or cab instead.

I'd just forget about it for a few months, come back, see how things are going and then decide about ordering. The new 997 is what you want. All accounts indicate the 996 and 997 are very different cars.

Re: Anyone have a perfect 997/S?

3500km on my friends 997S, and no problems.

Re: Anyone have a perfect 997/S?

My 997S is #489, 5 months old. No(!) problems.

Re: Anyone have a perfect 997/S?

    My 997S has a build date 10.04.
I had the 'instrument cluster buzz' that I noticed as I drove off the showroom floor. This self-corrected at 400 miles and I currently have 1500 miles and car is perfect.

Re: Anyone have a perfect 997/S?

Define pure perfection. More me, squeaks and rattles aren't important at all because I don't care on a sports car. I usually listen to music or the engine/exhaust sound or I'm way too concentrated on driving.

My 997 Carrera S has now 7400 km on the speedo, I own this car for more than 6 months now.
Due to the 20 mm chassis, it has some minor rattle noises which almost can't be heard unless I'm driving on a really bad street.
The first gear doesn't pop in from standstill from time to time (very rare) but it got better. It probably has to do something with alignment, I'll have my dealer look into it as soon as I have my first oil change around march.
The clutch (pressure plate, clutch disc, etc.) have been exchanged because of a strange clutch operating noise when starting from standstill very slowly. Porsche didn't have an immediate explenation and because the noise got louder with the cold season, I got a new clutch.
Otherwise, no problems. I know of a dealer car which got a new clutch because of some excessive testdriving but otherwise, I never heard of same problems occuring very often. There is no perfection. My wife owns a Mercedes SLK 32 AMG which has now over 13000 km on the speedo. The car is two years old and NEVER had a problem. NOTHING. But ask other SLK 32 AMG owners if their cars have been trouble-free. I think the 997 started off pretty good without major quality flaws. Porsche is still a little company, even if they've grown fast over the past years. I think quality is pretty good right now, they just have to improve customer commitment and communication to offer a customer service which is at par with their prices. Sh.t happens, there is no perfect product but it really matters how Porsche treats customers and their problems. If they leave everything to the dealers, they'll loose in the end. Because a lot of dealers, especially in the US, don't sell only Porsche but also other cars like Audi and Volkswagen. And some of them apparently need to learn the difference between the treatment of a customer who spent 100000 bucks or 30000 bucks for a car. In my opinion Porsche needs to improve their treatment of the customers in the event of a repair/warranty issue. A nice loaner, a generous solution regarding repairs and a FAST solution...this is what customers expect from a first class car manufacturer. They still have to learn that.
