    Where is the limit ??

We have during the last week or so seen some heated discussions on what we can write and what we cannot write. I feel that we firstly should concentrate on the discussions about our beloved cars. That being said the users of this board have many other topics on their mind and from time to time we WILL run into other topics in one way or the other. This will lead to the use of words which normally do not refer to cars.

I am aware that with the global representation of users, there are many cultures represented and thus one person could be easily offended by a sentence or a word, whereas others would not even notice.

Feel it could be interesting to get your opinion on some of these topics.

Re: Where is the limit ??

    Tso,
Although I appreciate this poll, I am not sure it will be of any help.
The idea is good though and I get your point.
But internet is even worse than phone, it is like email.
We are all working in offices right? Well at least most of us I would think.
Well, when you send an email, it can sometime [censored] off the other person even though it was not meant to, all this because the tone cannot be transcripted onto a written message, for the phone, same problem because you can't see the person's facial expressions, and so on...
So of course I am sure that most people are only joking when they mention [censored], nigger, [censored], etc. but because of the nature of the messaging support, it is best to refrain from it and keep it to cars.
It's a shame I agree but is has to stay this way otherwise, it becomes impossible.
Someone who's actually pretty good at this is Nberry, I personally enjoy his posts because even though the end point is to be a critic, he always does it in a very respectful manner IMO, then again, he's cheating, he's a lawyer.
But I hope you see what I mean, people are sensitive, even with words like [censored].
You really have to know the person before making such remarks, for example, I can safely say that Ron Houston has a tiny [censored], because it's true and hence the Porsche therapy! It's ok Ron, you'll see me soon buddy and will be allowed to beat me up!
    Take it easy!
    Fanch.

Re: Where is the limit ??

Fanch I get you, and I agree to a large extend. But let's try to see it from another perspective. In the poll where I sat my ticks, I as an example said that I feel offended by the word nigga. Why ? I can't tell you. Does that makes me a better person, I think not.

Let's imagine that we took the word "pig". I am sure that most Europeans and Americans could get some fun out of this. You could say to your friend Ron in Houston that he was eating like a pig, he looked like a pig etc. Do we show the necesary respect to our arab rennteam members, when using this word ?

Let us agree that the writer should stay out of offending persons, but I believe that also the reader sometimes have an obligation to respect the writer and his culture.

Let's put it to rest, I can see that there is very little interest for people to show their opinions unless if it comes down to what colour we like best on our new cars

Re: Where is the limit ??

this is stupid - This is not the forum where these words should be coming up. No need for them - There are plenty of other forums that will satisfy that.

Re: Where is the limit ??

Topher I am sorry but I think you missed the point. The fact is that admin has been a bit harsch over these words, the poll shows that a large part of the users does not care. What is happening when admin start all the warnings, we start to discuss the words. If we take the 3 first words in the poll it seems that 20 percent (or less) feel the words to be inappropriate....could we argue that the remaining 80 percent (plus those without an opinion) should accept them ??

The problem is as in many other cases that a subject or a word is being taken up and all of a sudden hell breaks loose, ignore it and let it rest instead of giving people the satysfaction to provoke.

    Peace...

FANCH, sorry forgot to give you the credit for your argument that mails, chats and phonecalls often runs of the track due to the reasons already mentioned in your mail.

As an arab I fail to understand the connection you are trying to make between the word pig & arabs being offended!!! Unless you are insinuating that arabs are referred to as pigs??

Could you be kind enough to clarify.

Re: Where is the limit ??

    i agree with topher,

this forum has no 'off topic' forum, which is usually where such words and topics are in play.

Re: Where is the limit ??

Yes, try to call an arab in Denmark a pig, that he eats like a pig and he would on the spot be offended. If you don't feel offended then I suggest you just leave it there. I have absolutely nothing against arabs, if I had I should maybe have cancelled my holidays in Dubai next week...

Re: Where is the limit ??

My 2 cents. Everything is acceptable depending on context. If any of these words are used just as words in a fun way, I guess they are OK. On the other hand if I call someone a ****** as an issult, the context is changed and the mods should intervene.

Bottom line: This is an Internet chat Board. It's here for the fun, The community, the passion. Arguments are good and helpfull as long as they are two opinions being confronted and not two Ego's in a fight.

To RC and the rennteam team: Thanks for an excellent board. Even without agreeing with everything here, the moderator job as been excellent from my view. Thanks.

I guess in that context if you call anyone (arab or non arab) a pig he/she will be offended. In any case tso, I have no doubt that your intentions when bringing up this subject were well, and I'm sure you don't hold a grudge against arabs or any other nationalities for that matter.

And btw, when in Dubai lets get together for a drink or something.
