No spare wheel in the 997

The new 997 will come without spare wheel. Thus opens the trunk to 135 ltr.

Re: No spare whell in the 997

    Lars,
I'm not following you, do you mean that the trunk increases to 135 ltr? It is 130 ltr on the 986/996, does the removed spare wheel only give 5 litres?

Anybody knows if the fuel tank capacity increases as well?

Re: No spare whell in the 997

is that a good or bad thing ?

No big deal. The ferrari's do not come with a spare. You are provided with a bottle looking container which inflates the tire and can be driven for at least 100 miles. The key is to not run on the deflated tire for any length of time. If that occurs the container is of little help

Typically the tire needs to replaced especially on performance cars. However, I read recently that Michelin has stated a patched tire can still maintain its performance rating and safe to drive.

Re: No spare whell in the 997

How bad can the flat tire be and still be re-inflated by the "fix-a-flat" or whatever will come with the 997?

I had a blowout in March, and I seriously doubt that anything could have reinflated the tire. Without a spare, I would have been forced to call a tow truck.

By the way, I was driving a rental car at the time, not my Porsche. But it still makes me doubt the wisdom of not having a spare.

This would suck if happened to a 997 without a spare. I wish they would put the spare tire as a free optional thing like the sunroof delete option.

Re: No spare whell in the 997

Enough posts like these and they may put a spare in. Just like the Cayennes. The '05s will have the spare tire as standard.

Re: No spare whell in the 997

My '03 E55 didn't have a spare--it came with a can of fix-a-flat goo and a compressor. The '05 E55 has a compact spare (unfolds when inflated) so I guess they got enough negative feedback.

Re: No spare whell in the 997

I hope there will be a spare.
I'm driving a lot out of Vienna, and I just imagine what a big mass it would be to get stuck. Better to ride home with 100km/h than to ........ uiuiui.
That Ferrari doesn't offer a spare tire is also very bad in my opinion but at the other hand a Ferrari you don't use for daily driving, or business trips out of town. Anyway most of the Ferraris get stuck because of other reasons.

The spare is optional with Ferrari. Regarding other reasons for breakdowns involving Ferrari's; keep thinking that way. The more people that do, the better I like it.

Hmmm ... pretty efficient strategy for a manufacturer ... to suggest a higher level of eclusiveness ...

    Fantasma,

The spare was first omitted on the 1st gen GT3 about 5 years ago. It is replaced by a light styrofoam tray holding the tools, which results in the trunk floor being lowered by about 30 mm (roughly 1.1/4") only, so your trunk volume does not benefit from the full volume of the omitted spare.

The tank volume quoted for 997 is marginally bigger, but this has nothing to do with the lack of a spare. The two areas are separated by a sheet metal firewall.

    Careful Rookie,

Someone might accuse you of sarcasm!

    Only kidding.

Re: No spare whell in the 997

I've been told by Porsche that the 997's trunk volume increases by "about one gallon." For size, think what two half-gallon milk containers look like. Not a lot.
