    X5M/X6M - what the heck...

    Today I just realized that the X5/X6 M is a 4-seater only.

    Only two seats available in the rear, meaning that I can't go for it since my wife needs 5 seats (two kids plus grandparents from time to time).

    First Porsche with the Panamera, now BMW with the X5/X6M ? Are the developers nuts or just plain ignorant?

    Very disappointing.

    Now I'm back thinking about the Audi RS6 and the next Cayenne generation, unless Porsche goes completely nuts, offering 4 seats only on the Cayenne.

    Oh boy...I can't believe it.

    The X5 M IS 5 seater, Here is a picture from the brochure:

    Only the X6 M is 4 seater.

    Thanks, I hope you're right. According to the german brochure, the X5 M is also a 4-seater. I just drove the X6 M and yes, this car is a 4-seater but if the X5 M is a 5-seater, this would be great. The photo you posted shows a 5-seater but why does the german brochure say something different ?!  Weird. I'm going to check this as soon as possible.

    Here's the original text from the BMW brochure:

    Must be just an error, it would be really stupid for BMW to release the X5 M as a 4 seater, the extra 5th seat is the only reason somebody would choose the X5 M over the X6 M, there is no other major distinction between the two vehicles except for maybe a little extra truck space in the X5 M.

    Well, what can I say: I just fell in love. The X6 M is a fantastic SUV and a real bargain compared to my Cayenne Turbo S.

    I may post some photos and a short driving report next weekend, right now I have a lot of work and can't even copy the photos from my cam to my computer. Smiley

    If my dealer offers me a good deal and if he is willing to take in my wife's M3 Cab DKG, we might go for the X5 M. The X6 M is the SUV my wife loves most but it is a 4-seater only and I doubt that my wife will be OK with that.

    The current plan is to get the X5 M as a family car and to get a 991 Cab PDK as a fun car  in 18 months. No more 997 Turbo I'm afraid but I think I can live with it.

    Not sure if the "plan" works out but maybe we're lucky. Smiley

    Same boat as you here RC. These large 4 seaters just don't do it since our second child just arrived. When often ride with a grandparent or nanny, and the cayenne is hardly big enough already when we go shopping. Shouldn't the X5 be slower than the X6 as it is heavier and higher? Isn't the X5 a 7 seater which would be a good reason to get it over the cayenne?

    The second-generation 2007 X5 (not to be confused with the X5M) had a third row installed capable (barely Smiley) of seating seven.  The new X5M is different from the second-gen. X5 having only two rows of seats (plus alot more power with its M-powered V8TT Smiley), but it is definitely a five-seater.  One can see from Palenimbus' pic of the back seat, there are two main seats (perhaps why the German BMW reference Christian provided mentioned seating two in back), plus in the "bench" setup, a smaller third seat but with its own seat belt. 

    But I agree on the disappointing trend of luxury carmakers to build sporty but larger four-seaters, e.g., the Panamera, even the X6M.  For one looking for a fast five-seat SUV, and doesn't need or want manual tranny, the X5M looks promising!

    But if I lived in Germany and needed a fast family hauler with an auto tranny, I would go for the Audi RS6-V10TT making at least 580HP and easily tuned to 700+. SmileySmileySmiley

    If you ask me this might just indicate that the rear seat design is for two passengers - but still - legally - you are allowed to load three passengers into the rear of the car. No need to worry probably Smiley

    i am not sure but would assume that the X6 is registered as a 4 seater in Germany due to the lack of a 5th seat belt in the middle and probably also due to maximum laden weight.

     The X5M has the same rear seat design as a normal X5, a normal bank not a two seats. Only the third row isn´t possible to order.

    As far as I know X5 M got 3 rear seats while X6 M got 2 rear seats. Same as non M models.

    Here is Car and Driver comparison test between X5 M, Cayenne Turbo S, and other competitors. X5 M won with big gap.

    Well for German highway the top speed of the cayenne is higher... The X5M is a better deal, yet I would not get rid of my cayenne TTS for it, unless maybe if there was a third row... Bottom line? The BMW is nice but not the cayenne killer that was expected, especially if you think the cayenne is the old generation whereas the X5 is brand new...

     Honestly RC, I have an Audi RS6 Sedan and cannot be happier.  I've tested the car in extreme heat and also in rainy weather and can't stress the quality of the quattro systems safety.  Even in the extreme heat I ran away from a 996 TT slightly tuned and my car is stock.  The only problem honestly is the fuel consumption as I think the tank is a bit small for a fuel thirsty motor.  I would be happy to share any specific question.  My only question now is what tuner to use to upgrade my car?

    Smaller Tank might also be an issue for X5 high speed highway driving.

    Only in the top end :) But since you are German that's the part you focus on. For the rest of the world X5/6M is the faster car.

    Only the in the top end, but since you are German that's the part you focus on. For the rest of the world, the X5/6M is definitely faster. Here in Canada the price difference is over $60k, that's enough to buy a fully loaded 335i.

    lol i tried posting a reply and then the server crashed on me so I thought the post was gone. But the truth is the post got through and my 3 re-types turned into 3 of the same post.

    RC : It's not the first time it happened on me, the page seems 'hang' for maybe a minute with the circular 'clock' in the middle and then I get forwarded to a page saying there was a server error.

    This usually happens when a software update is implemented. Maybe we should turn the forums off when we do that. Smiley

    Btw: what internet browser are you using? Older browsers may not be fully compatible with Rennteam 2.0 since Rennteam 2.0 has been optimized as a Web 2.0 application.
