    Weighty issues

There was a discussion in Rennteam recently of the Cayenne's weight and it's relationship to occupant safety. In the US at least there is the general public perception that a larger, heavier vehicle is safer.

The NHTSA completed a study yesterday that tends to confirm this traditional wisdom:
    Quote:
NHTSA Study Finds More Weight Can Equal Safer Vehicles

Federal regulators Tuesday said a new study shows reducing the weight of vehicles, done mostly to improve fuel economy, has resulted in more traffic deaths, especially among small-car owners. The study shows that until tougher standards are set for automakers to design trucks and SUVs to inflict less damage on other vehicles in crashes by way of vehicle height standards and bumper designs, occupants of heavier SUVs and trucks that get poor fuel economy will be safer than occupants of lighter vehicles.

This quote came from The CarConnection where there is more information on the study.

    Re: Weighty issues

So according to this study, the safest vehicule is the tank ....

May be I should consider buying an heavy truck like an 18 wheeler, I'll have plenty of torque and a lot of room for the luggage ....

    Re: Weighty issues

hmm, don`t know but if i have to choose i would prefer a crash in a 911 much more than in a heavy SUV

    Re: Weighty issues

A lot depends on what type of crash you are planning to have. If you plan to run into another vehicle, weight could be to your advantage, everything else being equal. If you plan to crash into a fixed solid object or rollover without hitting anything then weight might be your enemy.

    Re: Weighty issues

Blasphemy! This talk of crashing perfectly good 911s and Cayennes will stop at once! ;-)

    Re: Weighty issues

    maybe Austin,

I learned in shool that weight multiples with the speed and the thought to go through something with 20 tons its not very nice :-)

I would prefer the 911 cuz there been a lot real badly crashed 911 but the numbers of deads and comparing to most other vehicles been very, very low.

But your`re all right with better leaving the cars and ourselfs like they and we are :-)

    Re: Weighty issues

    Re: Weighty issues

I had the same shipping estimate but it actually shipped in two weeks. I think those estimates must have been prior to the publication date.
