Do you think it would be scary to drive without the AWD?  I'd be tempted to try it, but might be too hot an engine for that.

Do you think it would be scary to drive without the AWD?  I'd be tempted to try it, but might be too hot an engine for that.

In fact I did attempt to run it like a GT2, it was properly converted to 2WD including the correct end casting for the gearbox, the weight came down to about 1360kgDIN IIRC. The steering was absolutely incredible, really delicate and alive I was in love with it. The problem was (as you have alluded to) too much torque, on normal roads with their cambers it was pretty dangerous it literally attempted to leap into the hedge when the boost came in on anything other than billiard smooth surfaces. The racing GT2s never ran more than about 820NM and used much bigger stickier tyres and of course racetracks are generally pretty flat.

I ran it in 2WD spec for a fair while but eventually decided it was too dangerous and had the whole (heavy) 4WD system put back on and while of course it lost the beautiful steering it instantly became safe again.

It is interesting because technically the 993 4WD system is supposed to have zero torque transferred to the front until a loss of traction heats up the viscous coupling which hardens and starts transferring torque forwards, in practice this wasn't the case with my car and after researching a bit I concluded that the VC fluid temp is always on the threshold of transfer since the whole drivetrain is hot and at the limit of traction all the time (because of the higher torque output) so in practice my car always had some drive to the front once the engine was warmed up. The 4WD back on and the car was mega useable again, one can chuck it round and hang the tail out for fun under power - great fun.

Very cool car. The 993 widebody cars are the best looking Porsche's of the last 20 years, IMHO.

    Very cool Toby!

Two things, I'd consider a Becker radio for the interior, and I'd put it back to its 2WD config. Nothing beats uncorrupted steering, even if it'll be a lively car, that's what makes it exciting.

Are you happy with the PSS9? I had PSS10 on my CSL but didn't really bond with it. Felt a bit sloppy. Changed to KW Clubsport on that and on the RS and never looked back.

Agreed about the Becker. Agree about the steering but I do remember how "exciting" it was, watch the new 991GT2, I'll bet it doesn't have more torque than this 993, even with modern chassis and nannies, Porsche know the safe limits and 800NM rear wheel drive with the grip of the 911 is about the safety limit, other RWD cars can just spin the torque away but the 911 with LSD will grip hard and throw the car in the direction of the camber and if it is only under one tyre this is not good. My 997 has constantly flickering nannies if driven with any gusto...

The Weissach Turbo Sport kit was developed for the Euro 993 turbo S model (and was available as a retrofit for other models) people may remember the reviews about the harsh ride of the Euro Turbo S ? this was down to the shocks and springs, I ran them for a while but they were only really suitable for smooth Bavarian asphalt. PSS9s set on full soft is how I used the car, the softer damping helped with grip and with the rest of the chassis it was very tight. I more recently drove other 993 Turbos and they don't feel like mine, even the steering is a lot diffferent.

It may be down to personal choice, I suspect you may prefer a harder ride but I like to have my DDs a soft as feasible because it means you keep on reaching for the keys..... And I guess "harder ride" is all relative, these are all "sports" suspensions compared to modern stuff Smiley

hummm, how did I miss this one? cheeky

    Re: TB993tt's unique 993 turbo

I decided to put the 993 back on the road for the summer, had a checkover, new 10-60 Mobil Motorsport oil, filter, new brake fluid and MOT test, needs a new rear arm, and new brakes....

The brakes are an odd one, it had new genuine rotors, calipers and standard pads about 400 miles ago, I took it to a runway vmax event in 2014 and did maybe 12 runs up to 200mph followed by heavy braking. It seems the factory stuff cannot cope with this, the discs are heavily cracked and have discolouration through heat, Amazingly the front pads are 75% worn angel........

So I am researching brake options and am thinking of Girodisc front rotors 322mm and standard factory rear rotors with a set of Endless high spec pads.

Took the car out for a spin with two kids in the back, great fun, amazing how these aircooled motors are so zingy compared to the 4 valve water cooled and their noise is very special.

beautifull, one question, what is your wheel sizes and what tyre are you using ?

    Re: TB993tt's unique 993 turbo

Have you checked Performance friction discs and pads? I'm running them now and very happy with them. If I'm not mistaken they supply Porsche Motorsport, or at least the Cup programme.

    Re: TB993tt's unique 993 turbo

Wheels are 18* same size and offset as OE 993 GT2, I'm using Michelin PS2 N3 which I am very happy with.

Performance friction do not list a specific brake disc replacement although I'm sure with further investigation one could be found, the Giro disc on the other hand has been used extensively (with great reviews) as a bolt on replacement and it is not too expensive at ~$430 per disc (inc centre). I have used Endless pads a few times now and they really are something special, they seem to give the magic combo (for the street) of no noise, little dust and superb all round stopping performance, they are expensive but last a lot longer than other pads. Amongst numerous other accolades Endless supplied Mercedes F1 last year so they top tier :)

My shop said to try this, it is supposed to be for older high mileage engines to help stop them leaking although this engine has only done 17K miles   Smiley
