Locking wheel nuts on the 997?

Just wondered if the 997 comes complete with locking wheel nuts? If so, are they any good? I know that the ones on my Audi can be unlocked with one of only ten combinations which is crazy.

    Cheers,

    Ed

Re: Locking wheel nuts on the 997?

On the 996, Porsche provided a special lug that you use with your tire iron to unlock a special bolt on each wheel. I'd expect they'd use the same system on the 997. I don't know how many possible combinations there are.

Re: Locking wheel nuts on the 997?

I don't have my 997 yet, but I just got through reading the owner's manual and don't find any mention of locking wheel nuts. So, I don't know if the 997 have the same type of wheel bolts with a "key" like the 996. Maybe someone with a 997 can answer this.

Re: Locking wheel nuts on the 997?

Yes, I confirm there is such a thing on my 997.

Re: Locking wheel nuts on the 997?

That's a shame for Dr Phil - he might have found a source for the 19" wheels that he can't get that won't fit his Boxster!

Ed it will come with one locking wheel nut. This makes one feel better, but is of little consequence to professional thieves. If they want your alloys they will get them, I speak from personal experience From memory there were around 20 combinations for the 996.

Thanks for that - this is what I feared. I'll put some McGards on my shopping list...

Re: Locking wheel nuts on the 997?

Took my wheels off last night, (after buying a jack), one nut on each wheel is not a hexagonal nut but has a ridged appearence, with as has been said an adapter supplied to fit the wheel wrench rather than a conventional lock.

Let me know where you get them from as I would like some for when mine arrives. Thanks

These guys are apparently the UK distributer http://www.smarterdirect.com/products.cfm?editID=10&mainSection=3 - not sure of the price yet, but will let you know. Cheers, Ed

Re: Locking wheel nuts on the 997?

When I picked up my 997S I asked the service department what the "key" ID was for my wheel locking bolts. He said there were 60 different locking bolts and that the dealership had two boxes with 30 of each in them. He found the one that fit my bolts and was able to identify it for me in case my locking bolt "key"/socket should be lost or misplaced.

I bought a 914 once that had a set of McGard (?McGuard) wheels locks protecting it's gold mesh Enkeis

I was unable to remove the wheels because the PO had lost the 'key' that fits in the wheel wrench. A local tire shop loaned me a tool to remove these without the key. It was basically a 1/2" drive socket that was tapered on the inside to match the outer surface of the McGard lugnut. You hammer it onto the lugnut and the fit is so close that there is enough friction to turn it off with a ratchet wrench. I'm sure thieves have these too. There were 6 or 7 different sizes and they came in an orange plastic box with McGard on the front.
