December Cars Sales: And the Winner is: 997 or 997S?

Porsche released its December sales figures for the US.

    .........................December..........Year to Date
    911 Carrera (997).........277................1056
    911 Carrera S (997).......234................1194

Interesting that the 997 is now more popular than the 997S in the U.S.

But aren't these stats for how many 997/997S P ships to US dealers? Could be that P (for whatever reason) is jamming dealers w/an excess of 997, which may sit on dealer lots for more days than 997S and typically be sold for a greater discount than 997S.....tough stats to interpret w/o more data....

These are sales numbers to customers, not what they shipped to dealers.

yep, and 997 non-Ss are much more readily available than the Ss.

Re: December Cars Sales: And the Winner is: 997 or 997S?

My dealer says they have been getting more 997 than 997S though customer preference is overwhelmingly for the S, resulting in plentiful supply of the 997 and long waiting lists for the 997S. Some people are switching rather than wait.

This imbalance, if true, means Porsche is leaving a lot of money on the table since typically a step up model is higher margin and certainly higher profit.

If that is true, why would Porsche do that? If customers want the 997S, would they not send more of them? Not every customer who wants a 997S will buy a 997 instead, so they risk losing a customer. Since October, the sales between 997 and 997S have been fairly close. Either way, the sales are way up compared to last year meaning so far, the 997/997S is a sales hit.

Re: December Cars Sales: And the Winner is: 997 or 997S?

If they can sell everything they make, why make more of the S at all? Do any of you remember the "limited" availability of the Turbos in '01? Look at the resell values of those cars after Porsche went into high gear to make as many as the market could absorb. Look at the posts about the Carrera GT and how 1500 is too many. I think after the past couple of years with the 996 and the especially slow Boxster (986) sales, Porsche should cut back on volume and allow the car to regain some of its percieved value.
