Whats up with the Spanish Police & the Cannonball Run???

Spanish Police impound over 75% of the cars making their way to Benidorm and hold them pretty much all day. This appears to have been caused by the actions of three front runners - the rest of the cars find alternative routes to reach their destination, ready for the track day tommorrow.

23.00pm (SPA) - Cars start to trickle into Benidorm after paying hefty fines to be released by Spanish Police - dispite the intense driving, lack of sleep and hassle along the way, Cannonballers arrive demonstrating true spirit. It takes a different breed.

It takes a different breed to do what? Drive like maniacs on public roads?

Re: Whats up with the Spanish Police & the Cannonball Run???

Correction, not spanish police, the traffic police in Cataluña (region of Spain were they were arrested) is under the regional gov of Cataluña, and they are called Mossos de Escuadra. There are known as the greatest priks agaist motorists, and their governing regional polititians in charge of traffic are the most demagogic, populist and ignorant. Therefore they had the brilliant idea to arrest ALL cars with cannonball stickers they could find, wether they were obeying the traffic laws or not, took them to a parking lot and posed to the cameras of the news channel's cameras
Its is very sad and insulting how such moronic people can hold an office, and they just love to "crimininalise" sportcars in general which is a growing trend, which only generates more jealousness and resentment in the society for sportcars, luxury cars, etc.

That said, I'm not a fan of such events since they give all us sportcar enthusiasts and owners a bad name in society, not to mention my personal opinion of the type of crowd that takes part in these events which is not my cup of tea, and that many of them don't have the comon sense and skills to drive at high speeds and represent a certain danger.

But the Mosos should have done is just have place as many speed traps as their heart desired and arrest and fine all those that broke any law. However managed to catch only 2 cars speeding (at around150.160km/h I believe) the incompetent idiots so now they want to charge them all, speeding or not, with illicit association.

As soon as they got out of Cataluña, they had no more problems that the normal ones of getting caught speeding. They are now sleeping in their final destination,Benidorm, and even had a street closed for them for the final event or party.

I know Tim Porter and I know little bit more of how this rally being organized and run. Without disclosing too much details here its not simple as it looks and the organizers know the "police" threat and have pretty much sophisticated system to deal with it. So I wouldnt be suprised if this is an arrest "inspired" by the rally organizers to let the real rally to proceed.
