Porsche Considers Offering Gas-Electric Hybrid Model

    Wall Street Journal article today:

DETROIT -- German sports car and luxury SUV maker Porsche AG is studying whether to offer a hybrid gas-electric model, possibly a version of its Cayenne sport utility vehicle, the head of Porsche's North American unit said.

Peter Schwarzenbauer, president of Porsche North America, said a team has been studying whether the auto maker should develop a hybrid model since earlier this year.

"It looks like this is probably a trend for the future," Mr. Schwarzenbauer said during a dinner with reporters in Detroit Tuesday. "We are seriously looking at this technology" for the North American market, he said.

    Also 4th model discussion:

Porsche continues to study whether to offer a fourth model beyond its Boxster roadster, 911 series sports cars and Cayenne SUV. The company's deliberations are "30% if, and 70% what," Mr. Schwarzenbauer said. He said a decision should come sometime in mid-2005.

Re: Porsche Considers Offering Gas-Electric Hybrid Model

Who on these boards would actually consider buying an electric Pcar?

Re: Porsche Considers Offering Gas-Electric Hybrid Model

If the hybrid cars are offering more power for less fuel, yeah why not?

I can see you rigging up a boombox with a recording of a high reving Turbo V8. Even if it was fast your going to be missing a very important sound.

Just to clarify, Porsche is talking about a hybrid, not an electric only, so there would still be an internal combustion engine involved.

Also, the hybrids we have seen so far have focused on fuel savings, perhaps at the expense of performance. It wouldn't have to be that way. A hybrid could be designed for high performance.

The Honda Accord Hybrid and the Lexus RX400 are biased in exactly that direction.

Re: Porsche Considers Offering Gas-Electric Hybrid Model

.... and the RX400 platform is the one Porsche appears to be very interested in.

    Ferdinand Porsche?

"Ferdinand Porsche landed his first techincal job working for Jacob Lohner in 1900. Thier first car, the System Lohner-Porsche, used wheel mounted electric motors. Later cars used Daimler derived motors to power the electric engines. These systems were very elegant solutions as they did not use drive shafts, transmissions gears, chains, or clutches.

Around 300 Lohner-Porsche's were completed until the patents were sold to Emil Jellinek of Mercedes.
    "

Re: Porsche Considers Offering Gas-Electric Hybrid Model

I'd buy a Hybrid Porsche in a minute, especially if it was a 911 offspring. My office has a Honda Insight and a Toyota Prius, both great cars for the intended use. If Toyota can do it in an SUV, Porsche sure can do it in a sports car.

For Porsche to stay in business in the coming decades, they will have to jump in on this technology , while studying hydrogen, as BMW is doing.
