    Reading between the lines, the inference is that Porsche will shift to a mid engine model for performance orientated customers and that other models will be for luxury-sport customers.

    I think that the Cayman is a bridge product to a new model range and is their proof of concept for that. It foreshadows a completely new mid engine sub 100K sports car from them in a few years.

    It maybe a tacit admission that the few flat 8 914s (918's) they built should have become regular production cars

    There were 2 factory 914-8s made, one silver, and one red. Ferdinand Piech received the red one, and the silver one went to the company. Ferdinand's red one was sent to the museum after 10,000kms.

    They both used a de-tuned version of the 908 race car's engine. The silver one was carburated and produced around 260hp. Dr.Piech's red one was fuel injected and it made around 300hp.

    My old 914/6-2.8 Stoddard project car was lots of fun and it only had about 240 hp.

    I don't know how much water this article actually holds......since Porsches own web site clearly states the Cayman S as having 3.4L 295HP engine.....which is in contrast with the article. I must say I like the articles line-up better....295HP base, and 305HP S/CS. Make the base come in around the $55-$58K range with the S/CS being in the low $60s.....that would be just fine in my book. Don't think it will happen though.

    Im sure the Stoddard car was loads of fun !

    I know on the standard body 914's, they felt as if they broke thru a aerodynamic wall at about 125mph. being that the 4 cyl redline was 5200 rpm, the max I ever got a 2.0 4cyl one up to was redline in 5th for a indicated 132, then valve float set in.(this was done on a long down hill stretch of I-70)They always felt more stable at over 100 than my 911's did. Besides, 20mpg at a steady 120mph wasnt too bad for back then.

    I was impressed from how many KMs Piech put on his 918. He must have really enjoyed it!

    Only through brilliant engineering defying the laws of physics and fabulous marketing has Porsche been able to prop up the 911. It is time to bid it adieu.

    The Cayman hopefully will herald a modern looking Porsche with better driving performance.

    I think the 911 will linger on like Franco....

    Now if Porsche develops and sells a mini CGT, im sure it will have its "issues"

    What good is a Porsche without pain of ownership??

    I did 130 at Riverside Raceway once on the downhill main straight in a little 1.8. Restoring the car now and will put in a 2.0l 911 engine now that the smog rules do not apply to it.
