    599 GTB uses Corvette suspension technology

    You will be suprised to learn this but ...

    "Delphi is supplying the complete climate control system and MagnaRide controlled suspension technology, as well as the electrical/electronic (E/E) system including electrical centers, to this stylish luxury touring model."

    FYI, The Delphi Magnaride shock absorber system was developed in partnership with Corvette. It is a option on the base model C6 Corvette. Delphi is GMs main electronic components partner and is also trying to avert financial collapse.

    Supplier's advanced electrical, climate control and controlled suspension systems at heart of 599 GTB

    MARANELLO, Italy, March 1 -- Delphi Corp. is supplying key systems to Ferrari's newest luxury vehicle, the 599 GTB (Gran Turismo Berlinetta), the Italian automaker's replacement to the 575 Maranello.

    The new 2007 model, Ferrari's most powerful V-12 engine production car of all time, was officially unveiled this week at the Geneva Motor Show.

    Delphi is supplying the complete climate control system and MagneRide controlled suspension technology, as well as the electrical/electronic (E/E) system including electrical centers, to this stylish luxury touring model.

    "A high-performance vehicle demands the latest technology," said Volker Barth, president, Delphi Europe. "Delphi is proud to be supplying Ferrari with some of our most innovative products. Our goal is to help enhance the driving experience for Ferrari drivers. They want a ride-and-handling performance without compromise, and they want to be surrounded in a comfortable environment in the cockpit. Our technologies help contribute toward these characteristics."

    Delphi has been supplying climate control technology to Ferrari since 1992, and is responsible for the climate control systems on all of Ferrari's current model programs.

    To meet the challenging comfort demands of this luxury sports car, Delphi engineers worked closely with Ferrari to co-design the 599's climate control system. Production of the heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) module for the 599 began in February 2006.

    Delphi has made significant improvements for the new 599 dual-zone climate control system. It is managed by an electronic control unit and receives and processes data on external and internal temperature through newly enhanced software and a solar load sensor. Noteworthy system components include a carbon anti-pollution and anti-particle filter and a compact variable displacement compressor (7CVC) modified to meet the car's high performance needs.

    "Once again, Ferrari has put its confidence in Delphi and our Molinella, Italy, facility for their latest vehicle launch," said Steven Kiefer, managing director, Delphi Thermal & Interior, Europe and South America. "Ferrari represents the highest standard in the sports car segment in terms of performance, quality, sophistication and prestige. Delphi is proud of our long-standing relationship with Ferrari, and we share their passion and commitment to excellence Ferrari owners have come to expect."

    Delphi's long-running relationship with Ferrari also extends to its E/E distribution systems support, which also dates back to the early 1990s.

    "For many years Ferrari has collaborated with Delphi in developing and co- designing the most robust E/E systems and components, and similar to the previous programs on which we've worked together, the technology for the 599 meets the customer's very high performance and quality demands," said Stefaan Vandevelde, managing director of European operations for Delphi Packard Electric. He noted that the 599 marked the introduction of CAD CATIA design system usage between Delphi and Ferrari. "This allowed us the use of 3D virtual layout and brought advanced technical advantages and greater cost effectiveness, with the evaluation of different options best optimized for the vehicle's architecture before the availability of the prototypes."

    Delphi's approach to the new 599 GTB's E/E architecture resulted in several unique design characteristics. For example, the electrical centers designed and produced by Delphi have been positioned in the cockpit, due to the lack of available space under the hood, taken up completely by Ferrari's powerful 12-cylinder, 6.0L engine. Additionally, a new system was employed in the door-to-body electric connection to manage the side airbag function.

    As announced during the Ferrari press conference at Geneva Motor Show, on Tuesday, February 28, 2006, the new Ferrari 599 includes Delphi's revolutionary MagneRide Controlled Suspension System, which captures the "gran turismo" feeling of Ferrari's legendary vehicles.

    Using patented shock absorbers filled with a proprietary controllable fluid, the system offers increased damping tuning capability and speed of response over valve-based controlled suspension systems.

    This means better transient handling -- both for turn-in and yaw stability -- and superior road isolation that will result in increased driver comfort. Drivers will also experience a more precise steering feel and control of the vehicle even at top speeds.

    Sure it does, wonder why they ditched it in the Z06 then?

    In Europe, all C6 come with the Z-51 suspensions as standard, not the Magnetic Selective Ride Control suspension, wanna know why? cause we are a bit more demanding with regards to sportiness.

    But thats not the point, the embarrasing thing is that it was co-developed with Corvette for the BASE C6, and its now fitted in the ultra-expensive F599GTB... and it would be embarrasing if it were Porsche just as well.

    The good news for Ferrari owners is...

    If they ever need new power seat motors, HVAC contollers, fans etc..They should just get the actual GM part number, buy them at a Chevy dealership and save $$$$$$$

    Carlos, you will be pleased to know that Bilstein shocks and springs are used on Corvettes with Z51 and on the Z06.

    Corvettes do have some real Porsche content also. Their emergency tire fix kits are bought from Porsche.

    Bilstein? and I heard that the Z-51 pack does a great job and is a bargain for the price and the handling it brings amongst other goodies.

    F430's Skyhook is used in Volvos

    Skyhook is a Sachs product also optional on Maseratis. Ferrari did not develop it.

    Guess some of you missed my post....Delphi is NOT GM.
    The ZO6 doesn't have the magnetic ride control for weight saving and the LS7 has a different PCM as well.

    I've ridden in a C6 with it, it's amazing....hard and super sporty one second, and much more comfortable the next when needed.

    Don't knock it until you have used it....

    Some of you assume since it was in a Vette first it's bad or someething....let's get real.

    Bottom line is , other than some motor castings and perhaps a few remaining in house transmissions ( MBZ 7G ?) , nearly every part on every car made most everywhere is manufactured to the OEM specs by outside suppliers . Been that way for decades and getting more so. For instance, Lear will now design/manufacture and deliver for installation an entire interior from the dash on back if you wish. Everyone ragged on MBZs poor electronics bumbles of the past 5 years - it's more Seimens fault. That's why most suppliers keep a VERY low profile , so the manuf catches the bad PR! Consolodation is even more rampant in the supplier world as no one can compete with parts being made with near slave labor in " developing " countries . There are a lot of fake parts/graft in the business , too . Not reassuring if fake high stress bolts , etc., make it into the supply stream of a 200 mph sports car ! Used to be, manufacturers just screwed them together, although outside contractors are even taking over some of that since so many new model variants are being added to basic chassis layouts now , as in the case of some Porsche , MBZ and Bimmers, etc.

    The Magneride is also on Cadillacs (SRX, DTS, STS and XLR) and the Buick Lucerne. It's the quickest reacting "active" damper on the market.
    Based on the following, I'm sure Ferrari will be able to tailor the ride and handling to their liking.
    The MR fluid, which contains tiny metal particles, acts like conventional damper fluid until it is magnetized and its flow resistance increases. The degree to which the fluid "solidifies" is infinitely variable, proportional to the amount of input current supplied by electromagnets.

    If you think about it a car is a car.
    How much more does it take a supplier to manufacture a wheel rim, a seat, a steering wheel, a sub frame, a steering colum, engine, block, brakes, etc etc etc etc etc etc for Ferrari than it does for GM? Basically nothing. Metal is metal, plastic is plastic.

    Back in the day, companies like BMW, Ferrari, MB all did their own engineering and some of its manufacturing IN HOUSE. It was worth the extra price back in those days to pay a premuium for those cars - and they were probably not making much money per vehicle.

    I'd figure that Ferrari is making at the minimum 150K per vehicle, Porsche probably $60 to 70K - pretty insane.

    So this whole thing comes as no surprise. The 996 and the 997 transmission is not even made in Germany, it's made in Japan.

    The good that has come out of this is that there are really no loser cars out there anymore - everyone builds a good car nowadays - now you know why...they are basically all the same. They all use similar or in some cases like this identical components from 3 or 4 suppliers, Visteon, Delphi, Magna, Johnson etc.

    Too bad we are becoming a world of mutts. As manufacturers continue to buy each other out we won't have much option of what we buy. Capitalism is morphing into Fiefdom.
