    997 Carrera 4S - next summer?

Rumors indicate that Porsche wants to introduce the 997 Carrera 4S next summer as a MY 2006 car. Power is rumored to be 355 HP (same as Carrera S).
The C4S is rumored to be 17 mm wider in the rear compared to the 997 Carrera/S. Unfortunately I didn't pay attention, so it might be 17 mm on each side which makes sense. Pretty wide in my opinion! A C4 S Cab is planned for spring 2006. Again: RUMORS. As always, take them with a grain of salt.

    Re: 997 Carrera 4S - next summer?

Since the C2 cab won't be introduced until April 2005 isn't it likely that it will also be MY 2006? It seems that past models introduced that time of year took the next model year. Otherwise there would be 2 different 2005 cabs, the 996 models that were recently discontinued and the soon to arrive 997's. What do you think RC, 2005 or 2006?
    Phil

Doesn't it make sense for the 997 TT be introduced first? The 4S styling is usually a copy of the the TT.

    Nick,

I think this RUMOR C4 S introduction earlier than 997TT should imply that the 997TT will be something very special and different. But I'm sure C4 S will incorporate the new 4WD technology that we'll see in the upcoming 997TT.

I can't wait to see the spy shots of the C4 S; I bet it'll be amazing.

My recollection is 996TTS is 2.5" wider than 996C2; 997S is 1.5" wider than 996C2...based on this, 34mm wider (than 997S) 997C4S is not materially wider than 996TTS/C4S...correct?

    Re: 997 Carrera 4S - next summer?

personally not interested int he 4S... but the turbo...

    Re: 997 Carrera 4S - next summer?

    oh...oh....

    why a 4 wider than a 2 and out before a turbo?!?

Now i need news on the turbo..

    007 RC...go to work!!!

    ciaoo

    Re: 997 Carrera 4S - next summer?

The 997 Turbo indeed will be something special, thanks to Ferrari for the F430 and also thanks to Lamborghini by creating the rumor of a much stronger Gallardo.
Right now 480 HP are in the word for the Turbo, I hope it stays this way. Personally, I would say that 500 HP look better on paper but I'm not sure Porsche will take this route.
Finally, Porsche seems to have come to their "senses". The 997 Turbo is rumored to be a true successor to the 993 Turbo which over 8(!) years ago was a performance monster, especially the 450 powerkit version (later sold as a Turbo S with some mods).
The 997 Turbo will have a lot of new technology, something which actually worries me a little bit. I just hope they test the 997 Turbo thoroughly until they decide that it is ready for a "go".
Right now I heard performance figures of 3.9 seconds from 0-62 mph and 13 seconds flat from 0-125 mph. Top speed should be in the 315 kph range. I also heard that one prototype already did below 7:50 on the Nordschleife but prototypes can be better or worse than the final product and it also depends on the tires the car was driving at the time of testing.

Performance figures can be much better (I hope not worse... ), so please take everything I say with a grain of salt. I have to rely on rumors and gossip from people close to Porsche and unfortunately this doesn't mean the information is accurate. When I get 100% confirmed data, I post it here...if possible without putting the source in danger.

The price tag of the 997 Turbo will be an interesting story too, especially with regards to the US market. With a falling Dollar and stronger Euro, the 997 Turbo might be substantially more expensive in the US in two years compared to the 996 Turbo.

Guys, there is no need to thank me. I just posted some rumors and gossip. You better start posting what you expect from the new 997 Turbo regarding technical setup, performance, design, etc. There is still room for some enhancements/changes but not much.

Cheaper? Are you serious, Dario? Nothing gets cheaper.
    Well...at least Rennteam.com won't be more expensive.

    Re: 997 Carrera 4S - next summer?

This is exciting news, RC, even if rumors. As to what I would want in the new turbo, I think the 500 HP level (even though I know torgue, horsepower to weight ratios, etc., are what really counts), should be reached, just for comparison reasons. There is just too much out there over that figure (the Z06, for example), and Porsche would have to have a great PR program to counter the impression that 500HP makes for other competitors.
Also, I hope the US product can have the ROW suspension. I installed it immediately in my 2001 TT, and would do so again even though it seems to be an unecessary pain and expense.
Finally, I hope the styling is more than just a makeover of the 996 TT. I love my car, but have always thought the rear spoiler (for example) looked a bit weak. And over time, my 18" standard turbo rims have begun to look dated.
In any event, I can't wait!!!

    Re: 997 Carrera 4S - next summer?

My wish list for the upcoming 997TT:

If Porsche is listening please listen carefully I love you and take this as a positive criticism

480 or 500 hp is fine by me no complaints in the HP area (hoping that is not any less)

Is there any way that all options would be also tested in time and available for the U.S.. Don't make it like 997/997S that 20mm suspension and LSD is not available for the U.S. but available for ROW. Make the Aerokit available at the same time when the 997TT is ready for the market.

Can Porsche make a PSE for the Turbo? nothing matches the PSE's sound for standard Carrera; for sure Porsche would do a better job on turbo version too than the third party vendors, pleaseeee.

Make the DSG and 4WD a kick ass revolutionary ones that not any F-cars or Lambos have heard of and a styling that would steal the lime light from the competetor such as Ferrari and Aston Martin.

Oh, and last but not least find a space for a spare tyre .

    Re: 997 Carrera 4S - next summer?

I bet they'll stick with the 480hp for stock. Why? Because they can then sell you the 50hp powerkit to make some extra money. But then you'd have a car with more power than an F car or Lambo for about $10K or $20K less than those cars.

    Re: 997TTS Wish List

I'd also like to see 997TTS w/480+hp, DSG, PSE and well-debugged computer systems. But please kill the variable-ratio steering for 997TTS....my view is 997S' variable-ratio steering merely worsened what was one of the world's best steering systems with a counter-intuitive, nonlinear element.

    Re: 997 Carrera 4S - next summer?

    Christian..

I know that nothing become cheaper ..but dreams are a part of life..

For the rest..yeasterday i visit my dealer to take some calendar, and gift...and he tell me that a official Porsche Italia driver that race in Italian Gt and is a boss of the Porsche Driving School in Italy(Luca Riccitelli) drove the 997 Turbo in Weissach with a 500HP configuration..he said they are testing different engine power solutions...and i hope they choose the powerful one..

For me first is the power, second thing is the traction..i whant a 4wd..but with 95% rear and only 5% front.. and third the look..i whant a wing..a WING and a a wide car WIDE!

Yesterday also i write to a friend of Porsche Italia and he said me too between the lines that the next turbo will be near 500HP...

The dealer said the 997 Turbo will be on sale in spring 06..

    this is all...

    ciao

    Re: 997 Carrera 4S - next summer?

997 turbo: def go with the 993 type styling...but make the engine a 3.8 litre dry sump, 520 HP...optional 560-580 HP. IF not, doesnt really matter, computer chips will be out asap, Im sure...but its nice to have top figures. would like it to ostensibly beat the F430. thats my only thing. In a straight line, there is no reason for a NA engine to beat a turbo car.

    Re: 997 Carrera 4S - next summer?

Thank you RC for the info, and I have also heard from my dealer that 997TT will have 480hp. All of you guys have pretty much mentionned everything that I would like to see on the upcoming 997TT, but to reiterate, I would really like to see more of the 993TT styling and since we will be spending so much more to get it, hopefully they will try to make the car little lighter.

With 480PS I bet the car does 0-200km/h in much less than 13 seconds. 12 secs would be a more reasonable estimate, in particular if the car should be available with PDK. As a benchmarfk just see the current GT2

My only concern is that it might be wise to wait another 12 months or so after SOP before one should actually buy on of those masterpieces. Given all this new technology (new AWD, PDK, etc.) it may take some time to overcome initial production quality issues. Also, after 12 months the performance package (>500PS ) and the sport suspension should be available as options, if not offered from day one.

Unfortunately, this would imply: no new turbo for me until mid 2007

    Re: 997 Carrera 4S - next summer?

An additional 34mm in the width of the C4 is so small that it won't even be noticeable by the vast majority of the people. I bet you they will have some other styling cue -like exhaust pipes coming out of the rear valance.
    Any other possibilities?

    Re: 997 Carrera 4S - next summer?

    Not bad at all.

    Re: 997 Carrera 4S - next summer?

    ooooooooooo baby

    i take thats a photoshop?

    Re: 997 Carrera 4S - next summer?

Yes it is, I did it back in summer when Gauss posted photos of 997's in the factory before the launch of the 997.

This is the original photo of the 997S without the turbo rear bumper, wider rear, C4S logo and strip, and wheels.

    Re: 997 Carrera 4S - another perspective

Two of my local dealers have told me the same story, so at least there is consistency amongst thieves!

They claim the "4" versions will look no different from their "2" brethren, as PAG are now following the same strategy they created for the Boxster and Boxster S. Not withstanding that the new 4's will have a radically different electronic torque-sensing differentials that will be both faster and lighter. This same basic system will be used in the 997TT.

Their view is that the 997TT will look radically different from the C2's and C4's to create a bigger step and price justification.

One dealer said that the Turbo body would be offered as an option on C2's and C4's towards the end of the 997's life when Turbo sales would begin to slacken.

I would be interested to hear what the inside story really was...

    Re: 997 Carrera 4S - another perspective

RC, will they dump the C2S when the C4S becomes available? Seems likely to me.

Why would they dump the C2S? Different car for different market/people. I personally would never consider a C4S. To me, the 911 is and always will be a rear drive car.

I agree...i like the sounds of 500 hp in the 997TT, but I hope it's light enough to really make those horses count. No need to add on more weight. And while these electronic high-tech fancy-stuff can be really cool, don't overdoit. I still want to be driving the car, not some computer.

I like rwd 911's, I just like the C4S better, at least in the 996 series it's the best of the bunch(excld TT).I would never drive anything but an awd 911 now! I just think that if porsche releases two very similar S models, something may give. Remember your talking about a very small group of enthusiast here, awd probably reaches a wider audience.
Case in point, the 40th anniv is probably the best rwd 996 ever made, with all due respect to the GT series cars which are on a different plane. Sales were miserable, in the end they were discounting them 17k! On the other hand, the C4S cpe and cab are the best sellers in the 911 line my03-05. It just appeals to a broader group of potential buyers.
