    GT4 tyre choices

Has anyone run something other than cup2s?  I would love to hear evaluations of other tyres.

    thanks

    Re: GT4 tyre choices

Don't stray from the manufacturer provided tires. According to RC and Carlos, you'll die in a freak oversteer-roll-over ball of fire if a moose crosses the road. indecision

    Re: GT4 tyre choices

If you want a tire that has similar dry performance and is far cheaper, go with the Bridgestone Re-71R.  I think the factory Dunlap is also an excellent tire but it doesn't last as long as the Michelin, so it is the least cost effective of the three.

    Re: GT4 tyre choices

Heard great things about RE 71R also - wish they made rear GT3 size

Well, not if  all you use it for is to cruise down the boulevard back and forth with the top down so you should be OK Smiley

The real question is, will you get 1000 compliments and photos a day if you don't fit OEM tires? ... that! is the important question  Smiley

In NZ, wet performance is the top goal and the cup2s are darn good. Was looking to better them in the wet

    Re: GT4 tyre choices

There is a very nice tire comparison test, including three semi-slicks (Cup 2, Trofeo R and R888 R) in the latest Sport Auto. If noone1 would understand German, he would clearly state that Sport Auto has no clue about tires.  indecision

Btw: Sport Auto's conclusion is that all three semi-slicks shouldn't be used on public roads at all(!) and especially not on wet roads. Only the Cup 2 is somewhat "safe" on wet pavement, the Trofeo R and R888 R (which even requires special driving skills) are not.

Wet braking distance from 80 m to 0 m: The Michelin Pilot Sport 4 comes almost 7(!) meters earlier to a stop than the Cup 2. Smiley

Wet handling: The Michelin Pilot Sport 4 is 11.1 kph faster than the Cup 2.

Aquaplaning: The Cup 2 "gives up" 5 kph earlier.

    Really worth it? Smiley

Worst one is the Toyo R888 R: A bit of a small puddle in the middle of the road and you're...gone. Woosh. No grip at all. The Trofeo R behaves in a similar way but not that bad (Toyo R888 R is almost a slick).

Sport Auto says that the Cup 2 is the best compromise of the three semi-slicks they tested but they do not recommend any one of them for public roads.

    Re: GT4 tyre choices

RE-71 isn't as good as Cup 2 in wet.  I would go down to PSS or P4S for wet performance. These tires have a bit less dry grip than Cup 2, so you must choose your priorities.

You should see what I can do with the PZero on my R8 in the wet, absolutely amazing tire. Also the only reason why I do not go for the Cup 2 instead. Which actually brings me to a curiosity which cannot be according to noone1: While I can do crazy stuff in the R8 in the wet on the PZero R01, I would be seriously in trouble if I'd do the same with the PZero N0 (I think) on my 991.1 GTS Cab. While it isn't bad at all in the dry, in the wet, it can be challenging at times. Carlos already reported about it, even if my experience is a bit better than his (probably due to the AWD/PDCC on my GTS).

Wrong again. You'll die in the wet if you try using a high performance semi-slick tire. Immediate death... according to many people on here, at least..

I'd go take one, but alas, the power was knocked out by a storm the other day and my car is trapped in the garage. I assure you though, it looks just like your R8 and bluelines S3 steering wheel.

Had  the Michelins on my CGTS. GT4 came with Dunlops. Based on one track weekend and about 1k miles on the street, I'd say their dry grip is certainly as good, if not better, than the Michelins. Dunlop is said to wear faster,I know. Actually have a friend with a GT4 who swears by the RE-71s.

Same sizes as the 991.1 GT3 as well? Didn't check, this is why I'm asking.

AP serves a certain purpose for Porsche and he (AP) seems to have done a tremendous job so far. He is the face of the Porsche GT cars development and GT car customers appreciate it. Very clever marketing but what people expect from AP? He (AP) is honest though, his comment about the new 991.2 GT3 engine and it's development and the reasons behind it clearly prove that he was under (financial) pressure on the first 991.1 GT3 engine.

I kind of pity 991.1 GT3 buyers but I think we all knew that this is going to happen once the GT3 RS used a highly modded 4.0 l version with a lower redline. Smiley Smiley

AP works for Porsche. Like any good employee he says what he is being paid to say.

I lost him several years ago when he said "Grandma's can use paddles. They are not challenging." with respect to the 997.2 GT3 RS 4.0l and then the next GT3 and GT3 RS are offered with paddles only.

Sun has done 6k in the wet at high speed in the 2015 GT3, and the GT4, and he's still rolling🐾🐾

the cup2 was way better than the ss in the wet much to his surprise, but thats just one Lab's opinion🐾🐾👍👍🤓
