So I have a 997...although not quite what I ordered

So today was the day I was supposed to be spending being shown round the Porsche Museum and Factory and then starting the journey home in MY 997S. Alas as some of you may have read, the order got a little confused.

BUT I did get a 997 today, albeit not mine and not quite what I would have ordered.

The car I have for the next 3 to 4 months is the Porsche demonstrator, a Seal Grey/Black 997 tiptronic. Spec is interesting as this was one of the first RHD cars in the UK but is not proper UK spec as it doesn't have full leather which is standard on all UK cars. Its running standard 18" wheels, has Sport Chrono, no PASM. Seats are adaptive sports heated actually very impressed with them despite earlier comments I made about comfort. Bose stereo, Satnav and phone modules, interior dimming mirror NO rear wiper (odd), sunroof, heated seats, that's about it.

And so to driving... what do I think?

Well, for one, living in central London, I'm now wondering if I needed the extra power of the "S" model. This is a fast car. Considering its on standard suspension, the compromise between comfort and control is pretty impressive. I had a Z4 on 18" wheels without the sports suspension which was not as composed as the 997 and much harder.

Power is noticeably up on my last 996, a 3.6 targa tiptronic. The delivery, especially with the sport mode enabled is extremely rapid. You do feel that the 'box could use an extra cog occasionally as every so often you feel caught between two ratios. The roadholding is nothing short of awesome, on damp roads I was cornering on one favourite long left hander at over 70mph and I was nowhere near the limit - my previous 996s where much more fidgety over the same piece of road. True the steering is a little less communicative but actually it has a meatier feel to it. I'm not a big fan of the steering wheel itself, this one has the one which is standard on the S and I have to say that the manual gearchange buttons are now off the mark. I'd be happier with a gearshift change rather than the buttons. I never understood why they dropped that from the 964/993 'box.

First impressions - I'm going to have some fun, if only I can keep hold of my licence...

Will post some pics soon. Only wish it was the S I ordered but I don't have to run this in and I can be a little less gentle with it as it belongs to Porsche!!!

Re: So I have a 997...although not quite what I ordered

thats retarded you didnt get the right porsche, alteast you have a loaner...

Re: So I have a 997...although not quite what I ordered

Congratulations senator. I am relived that your situation was handled in this way.:)

As an ex-targa owner I understand what you were talking about. Although the targa is a great car, the weight penalty carried by the roof does not, in anyway, help the car. All the wright is concentrated on top, which doesn't make for a great handling carrera. Enjoy your 997, it's a chance to re-evaluate what you need.

Re: So I have a 997...although not quite what I ordered

    Sounds great, have fun!

Re: So I have a 997...although not quite what I ordered

I borrowed a non S 911 earlier in the week when they adjusted the gearbox and share some of your views. Mine was a manual car, but similar in that it was Seal Grey and wasn't full UK spec inside. I found that the car felt more than powerful enough and almost (almost mind) made me consider why I'd automatically gone for the S.

I know what you mean in that it's nice driving a Porsche around, but you really want to be driving the one you ordered. It's worth the wait though, even getting mine back after a day felt special!

Re: So I have a 997...although not quite what I ordered

Ed - I actually sat down yesterday and worked out the price difference between the standard to my spec and the "S" and it worked out only Pounds4k difference so actually when you look at it like that the "S" is a bargain!

One question - anyone who regularly drives in town what sort of range to you get on the tank? It seems to be draining at an alarming rate...

Hehe - my tank is draining at an alarming rate as well. I've been to the petrol station twice and according to the computer I'm getting about 15.5 mpg which isn't ideal considering I'm being "gentle" whilst she's running in! God knows what's going to happen when I start driving properly....

Agree about the difference between 997 and 997 S - if you like a few of the basic options, you may as well go the extra mile and get the S.

Re: So I have a 997...although not quite what I ordered

15.5 mpg? during running-in no less. I guess that I should be happy with my 19 mpg avarage during my run-in. With the price of petrol in the UK, you guys must be loaded.

Re: So I have a 997...although not quite what I ordered

Are you guys useing superunleaded petrol (atleast 97 ron)i am going to use Shell Optimax or BP Ultimate when i fill her up later today

Re: So I have a 997...although not quite what I ordered

I've been using Shell Optimax. Half a tank cost me something like Pounds28 yesterday...

Re: So I have a 997...although not quite what I ordered

Fuel economy has a pretty dramatic range; on the highway in 5th or 6th I can get p'raps 24 mpg (US); 'normal' driving is maybe in the mid teens.

Still, the thrill is what matters; being able to zip up beats worrying about fuel cost. At least here in the US it's not much more than $2 per gallon (US).
