A few notes from the article:

Roomy interior with high quality. The seats are very comfortable.
Great handling (from an SUV), but the air suspension is too hard.
The steering is exact and precise.
The engine is very flexible and it loves to rev, too.
The new 8-speed-automatic is great, it shifts smoothly and nearly as fast as a PDK!
Ceramic brakes are great.

This car costs as much as my BMW X5 M (before the 21% rebate I received).

Now let me see: my X5 M, according to Auto Zeitung, does 0-100 kph in 4.6 seconds (Cayenne in 6.2 seconds) and 0-200 kph in 16.3 seconds (Cayenne 23.9 seconds).

For the same money ? Porsche (and apparently some customers too) needs a reality check. Badly.

I paid for an almost fully optioned X5 M exactly 99500 EUR. The tested Cayenne S costs 122000 EUR. Even with a huge rebate, there remains a 10000 EUR gap between the two cars/trucks, not to mention the huge performance gap.

It seems that you guys never wondered why a Porsche buff like me who owned two Cayenne before, switched to a BMW. There was/is a reason for that.

If people don't care about performance on a SUV, I wonder why they don't buy the cheapest Cayenne only. Why do people buy a Cayenne Turbo or a Range Rover Sport Supercharged? Why do people buy a Mercedes ML63 AMG?

Those who claim this, probably never were really interested in a SUV. Smiley

I may return to Porsche with the Cayenne Turbo S but til then...no way I'm paying a premium for...nothing. Sorry.

Martha, you word in god's ear but I already got the deal of my life with the X5 M. In my town, it is a town with over 350000 people, I own the only X5 M. Unbelievable. Smiley

I just hope to get a similar deal on a Cayenne Turbo S (new model) sometime in the future when this model is going to be available. Smiley

RC, I certainly don't argue that the X5M is superior in performance to the Cayenne S, or that it is the right car for you in your circumstances (needing to undercover, etc.). And, at first glance the premium paid for the Porsche seems unjustified. And I have never been inside, or driven, an X5M. But I do wonder if there are other tangible quailities in the Porsche that may justify the premium. Build quality, interior comfort and luxury, other appointments, that justify the premium. Acceleration is only one of a series of characteristics that make up a fine automobile.

I honestly am not disputing you, but would like your comments on whether--overall--the Porsche is worth the premium.

In the uk the turbo cayenne is £1500 more than the X5M.

Of course I would get the Cayenne Turbo S only if the public perception of the new Cayenne changes. Right now, many people don't even seem to realize that the new Cayenne is the new Cayenne, one of my wife's friend's mistook my Cayenne Turbo testcar for a Nissan (no kidding). The car was parked in my garage driveway and she saw it only from the side.

Time will tell...I have another two years to decide on it. Smiley

I love Porsche but paying 35000 EUR premium just for the brand...not really going to happen.

As to the quality of the X5 M: so far, the truck has been impeccable, no issues whatsoever and I now have hard driven 3300 km on it. The interior and exterior quality is at least at par with the new Cayenne but I have to admit that the Cayenne interior looks sportier. I also miss the air suspension of the Cayenne Turbo but thats another story.

Almost every invisible part, with the exception of the engine and some interior parts, are actually made by or for Volkswagen, a lot of parts even carry the VW logo.

So now let me ask you: in the US, would people prefer a VW over a BMW ? Smiley Smiley

Don't get me wrong, the VW Touareg has a good quality too, so there is nothing wrong with that but it definitely isn't better than BMW build/material quality.
