    Ayrton Senna remembered

To commemorate the death of the great Ayrton Senna, here's a very interesting documentary on Ayrton Senna's life and career:

    Plus some edited highlights:

Interesting article on who was the greatest driver in F1:

GGGrrrr... I'm so tired of BBC and this bull.

This "sorry media not available in your region" b.s.

It's the internet. What kind of crap is that!

Heist, the BBC is funded by TV licence fees payable by everyone in the UK with a TV set. As such, resources are limited and the cost of providing media content to the whole world is not automatically borne by UK licence fee payers.

The BBC also gets revenue from BBC Worldwide - its commercial arm - that sells BBC products (e.g. DVDs) and which sub-licences the right to show BBC programmes to TV/satellite channels all around the world.

The BBC doesn't carry commercial advertising on its various radio channels, its terrestrial channels (BBC1, BBC2) or its satellite TV channels (BBC3, BBC4, BBC News 24, BBC Parliament etc). AFAIK, BBC World and BBC America do carry commercial advertising to help pay for the running of those channels - which were once free when they were first set up.

    Re: Ayrton Senna remembered

Well fortunately my memories are my own. I attended 4 GP's in Montreal in the mid 1980's. Great Times.

Montreal was such a fan friendly track and the city was 100% behind the race weekend.

On qualifying and practice days you could walk all around to different areas to get a feel for acceleration, braking ..... At the far end after the start/finish line there was a hairpin leading to a slight uphill section. I stood at the top of the rise at the apex in some light woods with only the armco between me and the cars. This year Senna and Prost were teammates with Mclaren. I could look down into the cockpit as they passed by gloved hands on the wheel, brakes glowing red and ground shaking from the engine's power.

It was cool to be that close.

But the best memory of Senna was a couple years earlier in a light rain for qualifying to see Senna coming down the short back straight with grooved rain tires on and seeing his face clearly in the immaculate JPS Lotus. That black and gold car with Senna's chartreussse helmet really stood out. And the sound of the "backfire" from every shift on those turbo's was awesome.

Races in Montreal were such great fun. Weather was often perfect and the sound!! Lots of memories including Stefan Belloff in the Tyrrell, Michele in a burning ferrari right in front of me, Lauda a few feet away.

Another thing you don't mention is that broadcasters frequently just license the rights to transmit programs within their own "territory", and would have legal problems with other broadcasters with similar rights for their respective territories if no attempt is made to restrict availability.

Saying that does not mean that the situation does not also get me peed off. Smiley

Something we should all be aware of: we have all got so used to the openness of the web that other situations that restrict us in some way by comparison no longer appear defensible.

Like passport control at the Eurotunnel, you mean? Smiley

Even non-EU Switzerland dropped passport checks at its borders this year.
Now the Swiss just stop you at the border to take SFR 40 highway tolls off you. Smiley
