    Buying C2

Folks, after reading this board for a long time, I am ready to buy my first C2.  I am looking at 2 cars, 1999 with 52 K miles and 2000 with about 33k. One is being sold by a Porsche dealer (1999) and the other through a non-porsche dealership. The problem is should I get a prepurchase inspection done at the same dealership ?. Secondly, what is it I should ask them to check for. Since these are old cars is RMS and IMS likely to be a problem. Should I ask a leak down test ?. Any advice would be gratefully appreciated

    Re: Buying C2

Buy the car from the dealer with official warranty. Do not buy this any 996 Carrera with M96 engine without any warranty, these models are very prone to engine failures.

    Re: Buying C2

Don't buy any Porsche without warranty. 996 and 997.1 have basically the same engine with same problems only less on 997.1.

997.2 has a brand new engine and transmission if PDK, which again are too recent and unproven.

    Therefore, tread carefully!

To make it short (not wasting your time):

    1. avoid the 996 if you can, go for the 997

    2. always buy used Porsche with a used car warranty from an official dealer

If you buy from another dealer, make sure you can get one those aftermarket used car warranties offered by some insurance companies. I wouldn't buy a Porsche from a private owner but this is probably my personal opinion.

    Re: Buying C2

Thank you gentlemen. Unfortunately in the USA, 997 from dealers costs twice the 996, so due to budgetary restraints, I have to find the best possible 996 (i did purchase the car guide from Crawford).  Another general question, relates to buying a 996 with engine replaced by Porsche at 35 K miles (78 K total miles) under warranty. Does Porsche typically provides a "new" engine, or is it usually refurbished. I assume there is no additional risk in this, if anything the risk should be less because the chance  that the new engine would also have failure is very unlikely (assuming worst case 15-20% of engines fail).

    Re: Buying C2

And one more question, am comparing 2 cars (33k and 45 k miles, Carerras  both from year 2000). In one (33k) the stick shift was somewhat stiff, the other (45K, well serviced), was more like butter or very smooth. Is the somewhat stiff shift normal, or does it point to a problem.

    Thanks for all your patience.

    Re: Buying C2

    Rebuilt engines.

Hard to comment on shifters without trying the cars.

The shifting is done through cables (two) and they do get out of adjustment or become worn.

Also many owners have a short shift lever installed (factory and aftermarket) that are often stiff until the transmission is (very) hot. Also some aftermarket kits are very short resulting in too much stiffness.

    Re: Buying C2

Thanks, now I notice that the car has the short shift indicated in the specs. This has been all very helpful.

    Re: Buying C2

Congrats on your purchase.Smiley I would recommend that you join the Northern New Jersey Chapter of PCA. (pca.org)  The members can provide you with  recommendations for servicing your 911.
