    997 and Targa

Is it true that targa is only made for a couple of years for each generation of the 911?

When is the 997 face lift expected? My dealer says it will be my2008. If so, will targa also come in the face-lift (unlike the turbo)?

With regards to safety, is it lesser safe in case of accident or roll over?

Can you really fit small kids in the back seat or is it just too loud back there?

    Re: 997 and Targa

    Hello 03LX470,

You're right, the Targa is always the last model of the lineup to be refreshed (i.e. after Coupé, Cab, C4, Turbo, GT3). It means there's usually a year of two during which it's not produced. For instance, there was no Targa during model years 2001, 2002 and 2006. But don't worry, the 997 Targa should be produced at least until 2010.

The Targa is linked to the Carrera line, so it will get the face-lift at the same time.

Regarding noise, it's about the same as the Coupé. There is one thing that you must be careful with: don't lower the roof when someone is in the back... unless you want them to find out what "a close shave" means!

Regarding safety, I'd say it's much safer than the Cabriolet and just a little less safe than the Coupé. The side beams are very sturdy, they will protect you. The only things you might worry about are:
    - if you roll over several times and the window shatters (it's made in Securit glass so it's not supposed to),
    - if you roll over and land on a rock right in the middle, between the side beams,
    - if you get bombed or hit by a meteorite.
In any case, pretty rare occurrences, in which you'd be hurt even in a Coupé anyway.

Honestly, though, I would not buy a Targa in the UAE because it's going to be one hell of a greenhouse, even with the blind.

    Re: 997 and Targa

I have a 996 Targa and am using it as my family car. My 6 month son fits fine in his baby capsule. In fact, I think he will be fine in those little seats for a long tim. For kids, the big glass roof gives them plenty of extra things to look at.

i live in Hong Kong. Nowhere near as hot as the UAE but I love the targa as I can get the airy feeling of a cab while keeping the air con on.

911s never cease to amaze me. I can well imagine that kids in the back seats must be looking up at the sky and feeling something pretty special as you all drive along. Just goes to show what a variety of benefits one can find in owning/driving a 911

    Re: 997 and Targa

I made 9'000 km with my Targa 4S since november. I like this car so much I will never buy a daily driver without a panorama roof.

    Re: 997 and Targa

Sat in a C4S targa today OUTSIDE the showroom i.e. out in the sun. What I didnt realize before was that the roof shade in the targa has holes in it so when you close the shade, you dont block out the sun completely. It may be a bit problematic here in July when the temperatures can be north of 50C. I'm really disappointed as I had my heart sat at the targa. Looks like the cab may be a better option but I heard a lot of exterior & road noise in the test drive. So back to coupe, now just gotta decide whether CS or C4S !?!??!! My salesman firmly believes that 2008 will be the face lift & advies to order my own specs. However, I havent seen any confirmation whether MY2008 or MY2009 will be face lift.

If I remember correctly 03LX470, the roof of the targa is made of a special glass, which let's most of the light into the cabin, but holds off a certain amount of the heat.

I just found it in the Porsche business report, Porsche says the cabin of the targa doesn't warm up more than that of the coupé.

    Re: 997 and Targa

For what it is worth, one of the nice things about the Targa is that you can open the roof, allowing most of the heat to escape before getting into the car. Not sure if this helps. The Porsche air-con seems to be able to handle the heat well here in HK, though temps are not as high as UAE.

    Re: 997 and Targa

So can anyone confirm that, if the face lift is MY2008, then the targa will also receive the face lift (just after one model year of production)? I have fallen in love with a white with terracotta targa 4S & its expensive!!! i dont want to buy it now & see it being face lifted in October.

    Re: 997 and Targa

There is no reason the Targa does not get the facelift at the same time as the other Carreras.

    Re: 997 and Targa

I sold my targa for 2 reasons, the sun penetrated through the screen so the car was hot in the summer time and the squeaks. To make the matter worse, the car was in the rain for one day and I found 1/2 inch water under my seats. I was schocked. The dealer told me that the drain tube for the roof were not connected right at the factory.

The problen with the faulty drain is a pity, but surely nothing the targa model is to blame for. Just human failure that can happen everywhere.

I drove a targa recently for one day and discovered no squeaks at all. Car had been running 7000 km. So perhaps Porsche solved that problem as well.

But I find your comment about the heat inside the cabin in the summer very interesting. That is surely a thing to think about, when you seriously considering a targa and live in a sunny and warm area.

    Re: 997 and Targa

I had a 996 Targa for 2 years and it is fair to say that during summer the sun is penetrating even with the screen and the interior was rather hot.

I enjoyed my targa the most during winter, when the weather was grey and dull because the interior was bright or during a sunny day in winter with the roof open even if it would be "freezing" outside.

When I sold my car, it had 55,000 km and definitely I had some squeaks from time to time. I would put a bit of silicon with my finger on the joints and that was it for about 1-2 month.

By the way, I never had a water leak whatsoever, may be edz61 has been unlucky.

Would I buy another one YES and I would love to go for a 4S

BMW claims that their cars with the large panorama roof (Touring models) are equipped with a special ventilating mechanism preventing the cabin from heating when parked in the sun (though I didn't test it myself yet, hence I can't comment on the efficiency of the system). But: if BMW found a solution, PAG should be able to solve this problem as well

    Re: 997 and Targa

Audi has been offering that option for many years. They called it tropical package if I remember correctly.

The problem was it was reducing the head clearance because a solar powered fan would ventilate the interior.

It was offered in 1994 and 1996 when I bought my 2 Audi A6 Avant.

The problem with the Targa in the sun is not really when the car is parked, it is more when you drive the car and you basically need a cap to prevent you from cooking....
