Porsche owners happiest with their cars: study

    http://news.webindia123.com/news/showdetails.asp?id=197343&cat=Business

Porsche owners are happiest with their cars followed by owners of five major Japanese cars, according to a survey conducted by a German automobile association.
A total of 34 cars were tested in the survey by ADAC. Other German cars received average points with Volkswagen, Land Rover and Smart at the bottom of the list.

Some 54,000 German motorists were asked to grade 1-5 their satisfaction level with the car combining experience with the vehicle and workshop service.

The German Porsche had the highest grades at 1.2 followed by Subaru (1.22), Toyota (1.27), Honda (1.32), Mazda (1.37) and Mitsubishi (1.43).

Russian manufacturer Lada had a surprisingly high figure of 1.46 points, finishing seventh.

Expectations from premium car manufacturers were far higher with customers expecting good quality and service for the higher price. Mercedes was voted near the bottom of the list at 2.02 points. The Smart manufactured by DaimlerChrysler was last on the list with 2.17 points.

Re: Porsche owners happiest with their cars: study

German Porsche-owners obviously are less concerned about quality issues than german Porsche-dealers...

University of Bamberg is conducting a new car quality survey by asking appr. 2,000 german cardealers (representing 28 brands) about their individual quality assessment (survey is conducted annualy since 10 years now).
As a result the University creates a Dealer Satisfaction Index (DSI) ranking the brands according to the school-grade system. 5=excellent to 1=not satisfying

According to the DSI ranking (2004) Porsche has performed relatively poor (Rank 17 out of total 28) with a grade of 3.2 Top seven scorers all Japanese brands (lead by Honda as Nr. 1 with 4.5 points) save for Opel, which astonishingly could gain a fourth place with 4.3 points
BMW was best ranked german premium brand (rank 8, 3.9 points), worst assessment for Mercedes-Benz (rank 28, 2.3 points)

The Porsche assessment has been far better in 2002 (3.9 points, which would have provided an equal rank like BMW in 2004) and felt sharply in 2003 (3.1 points).

I don't have the complete study at hand (only the rank-list) so I cannot comment about any details (e.g. what happened between 2002 and 2003 ? - maybe RC or other german board-members have an idea). Also a brand might get a bad ranking just because the dealers' expectations regarding quality is higher compared to other brands (just specualting)

Of course no Porsche dealership is using the DSI-Index as a marketing tool to persuade customers..... They prefer to show leaflets with the famous "TÜV"-statistics where Porsche always has gained top results. But you have to consider that the german TÜV (mandatory technical safety check on an biannual basis) only checks safety & environment relevant items such as brakes, tyres etc. They do not look into issues like broken climate control or even RMS

Nevertheless after comparing the ADAC- consumer survey and the DSI-dealer survey I am asking myself whether we (as Porsche customers) are not demanding enough regarding quality issues, so that PAG might have got the impression that they can get away with it

Re: Porsche owners happiest with their cars: study

Just saw, that I have improved my personal ranking by getting promoted from Enthusiast to Addict

Re: Porsche owners happiest with their cars: study

In wonder why ferrari isn't on that list? Oh wait...you have to actually DRIVE you car to be happy with it

Re: Porsche owners happiest with their cars: study

    Re, the ADAC survey ..

There are probably not enough new Ferraris sold to get a good response sample.

Funny to know Lada ranks HIGHER than VW and Mercedes

With some ownership and dealer quality surveys, you have to think about customer expectations, but that cannot cover
Mercedes recent record of poor quality. Even their Board of Directors admitted their car's quality has been poor.

Lexus actually is very pro active about customer service. They constantly seek out new ways to improve dealer staff attitudes and abilities. But their cars are so boring

    And...

Is there a link to the University of Bamberg survey?

Thanx for sharing the interesting survey information!

Re Mercedes-Benz: sometimes the concept of shareholder value (Mr. Schrempps favourite topic) and customer satisfaction do not harmonize, if not correctly synchronized (in DC's case even worse: they destroyed shareholder value + the cars' reliabilty at the same time)
A colleague of mine crashed his E-Class at > 200 km/h due to the notorious E-brake problems (luckily he wasn't injured, but the police asked for an alco-test, as they just couldn't believe it ). I had a C-Class a couple of years ago as a daily commuter and although I liked the kompressor-engine, the built quality was terrible (electronic gremlins causing a total break-down of power supply incl. lights/power-steering/brake support - not too funny at the autobahn, because the only cure was to bring the car to a full stop and restarting it - MB couldn't solve the Problem - door sills terribly scratched after 40k km due to lacking body stiffness - well, perhaps I should have not cornering with the damn thing in a P-car manner - strange noises from the suspension etc. pp.)

As for the university's link: browse www.faw-bamberg.de Then go "Press Corner" - "Archiv 2004" - "Qualität DSI" (15.06.2004) - There are a lot of other interesting surveys at their website, though all in german language.

Re: Porsche owners happiest with their cars: study

P.S.: Just saw that MB will recall 61,000 C-class models in the US due to defective side airbags and another huge number (press coverage says MULTIPLE 100,000 cars) of various models in the US as the emission control system is not working properly resulting in non-compliance with emission laws (alone the latter defect causing some 95 million USD expenses)

If these massive recalls won't stop MB will not be regarded as a Premium brand any more (very sad)

I wonder if Porsche satifaction would be this high if they sold as many Cayenne there as they sell in the US. I run into people that have Cayennes and most say they will not own a Porsche again because of the problems. This is very distressing and what makes it worse is Porsche used to help their customers out by trading them out of their cars when there was a problem. Now they are not helping out at all unless ordered by the judicial system. I understand that people will have problems, but if you are the most profitable car company in the world then spend some of that money to take care of your existing customers.
