Autocar 6th December 05 "Cayman bubble bursts"

"According to several independent dealers, the anticipated early demand for the Porsche Cayman S has failed to materialise. "There are many more sellers than buyers of the Cayman S", one source advised. The chances of picking up a new Cayman S at list price via a cancelled order at a Porsche main dealer are therefore good"

    oh, not you again!

Lead times are 12 months+ in the north, and considering I'm based there, that's good news for me. Maybe it's different down south considering OPCs are much closer together.

That's RC's line. (Not to me, though fortunately)
Why won't you guys believe that I really wanted to be impressed by the Cayman, I was on the verge of ordering one having seen it in the metal at the launch night and fallen in love with the styling, which has been wonderfully integrated with the Boxster's lines. I'd even mentally specced the car (guards red, sand beige leather etc). I was so disappointed when I drove it that virtually nothing has been done to differentiate the driving experience from the Boxster. What was I expecting, you may ask? Porsche's version of an M3, I suppose, as much of a contrast as the forthcoming Z4M will be from a regular Z4 roadster, not just quicker but sharper, with Porsche's experience in building the worlds finest drivers cars as the icing on the cake. The 911 is the GT coupe, more of a touring GT rather than a point and squirt machine, so it wouldn't have conflicted with that car. A greatly missed opportunity, in my opinion, as Porsche are paranoid about making the Boxster and its derivatives second class citizens to the 911. And that is why I believe the sales demand may not be quite as strong as those people who have ordered one may be being led to believe.

Re: Autocar 6th December 05 "Cayman bubble bursts"

Funny....my dealers 18 Cayman build slots were all gone in two weeks. Now that the demo is in the showroom demand has increased 5 fold. A lot of people were holding out till they actually got to see the car as pictures don't do it justice. He did have a couple of people that had been on the waiting list for a long time back out but were quickly replaced by other buyers. There are some dealers that have a few build slots left, but definitely not many. Once the car hits the street watch the wait time jump. One thing for sure, Porsche picked a bad time of year to debut the Cayman.....winter for a Sports Car? In the end, if the Cayman doesn't sell in mass that's OK by me.....I hate common cars!

Re: Autocar 6th December 05 "Cayman bubble bursts"

Sales seem to be good in NC. Don't know if it will continue but its good now.

You mean a Cayman sitting at a dealer will sell at list price and not under? Sounds like very high demand to me!

Re: Autocar 6th December 05 "Cayman bubble bursts"

All this means is that the opportunists in the UK that have ordered Caymans hoping to sell them straight on at a profit have come unstuck. So some of them have walked away from their orders leaving the cars available for immediate delivery to someone else.
I don't think it reflects any real problems, except for the "get rich quick" folks.

I assume you are in the U.S.? reading this forum and the various boards it seems that discounts in the U.S. can be obtained on almost all models, probably why the depreciation in the U.S. is higher than the U.K. Here discounts are unheard of, on any models in the range. Even the less popular ones (and before I get flamed I don't mean the Cayman).

Cayman at my dealer for sale. They have two!! Can't get much further north than Scotland

Very tempted to go for the all black one. Looks stunning!!!!! Chief mechanic says it is better than a 911 in his view!!

Re: Autocar 6th December 05 "Cayman bubble bursts"

The time of year can't help, who wants to buy a car 18 days before Xmas?

Did the Chief mechanic say why the Cayman is better than the 911 in his view?

Your the first person, I know of, to actually own a Cayman S.

Look forward to hearing your impressions.
