Villeneuve: "Racing belongs at the track, not public roads "

Interesting Q&A with F1 driver Jacques Villeneuve about driving on public roads and speed limits:

[...]Interviewer: "So, when you're not driving fast cars on the track, what is your daily driver? I'll bet it's a fast sports car."

Jacques Villeneuve: "Not really, my daily driver is actually a 4x4."

Interviewer: "OK, but I bet you really push it to its limits!"

JV: "No, I try to drive the speed limit and no more."

Interviewer: "But if you are ever pulled over, you can always say: 'Hey, I'm Jacques Villeneuve. If I can drive at 500 kilometres per hour, then I can certainly drive safely at 150.' "

JV: "Well actually, I was only ever pulled over once and that was for doing 120 km/h in a 100 zone. I was really embarrassed and apologized several times to the police officer and then I went and paid the ticket."[...]

Re: Villeneuve: "Racing belongs at the track, not public roads "

I am not a big fan of him, but to this I say

Re: Villeneuve: "Racing belongs at the track, not public roads "

Me too. Take it to the track.

Re: Villeneuve: "Racing belongs at the track, not public roads "

I disagree. Not taking it to the limit is certainly a very wise choice, but strict adherence to the speed limits and apologizing to the police for going 20 km/h over the limit? Give me a break!

Agreed. He should have offered to whip himself with a cat o'nine tails for at least 20 days!

Re: Villeneuve: "Racing belongs at the track, not public roa

I agree with JV BUT there's one assumption...that the highway authorities have settled on the right speed limit. In the UK, we have roads which I have driven on for years where the limit is 50mph and then suddenly the local authority narrows it on purpose and reduces the limit to 40mph. They reduce 40mph limits to 30mph and even some from 30mph to 20mph outside schools. Kids only walk around in numbers when they are arriving at or leaving school. But if they put a 20mph limit there, you have to abide by it 24/7. Thanks - they were really thinking about that one carefully.

There's a stretch of the A1 approaching Archway in London. It's downhill and they put a 30mph limit there. It's actually impossible to drive at 30mph there. My car ROLLS at 35mph. Why couldn't they just keep it at 40mph? What's worse is that they put GATSO cameras there so you have no choice. You HAVE to slow down. B*stards.

You guys in the USA and elsewhere in Europe are so lucky. Our authorities in the UK deliberately make the roads narrower just to increase traffic and thereby make driving less bearable to persuade more people to use public transport. They hate motorists here. Bus lanes lie empty and are used maybe 5% of the whole day. So much money is spent on road signs yet do they spend enough on resurfacing old roads? I am fed up with speed bumps and speed cushions. They waste fuel and wear out brakes and suspension bushings prematurely and slow down traffic. 1000s of people die each year because ambulances have to drive more slowly over them when rushing to the hospital. And they call it 'traffic calming'. Talk about adding insult to injury. Sorry - rant over.

Re: Villeneuve: "Racing belongs at the track, not public roa

When you drive at the edge most days of the year and it is your job, then in his case he has had enough. He also may be being PC.

I remember for a fact hearing about Alain Prost driving himself and Jacques Laffite in a rental car in Australia like a maniac. Gerhard Berger's accident etc. Most of these guys push it intelligently. There is a big difference between unknowledgeable punks dragging on city streets and experienced drivers driving capable exotics a little quicker than your granny.

Re: Villeneuve: "Racing belongs at the track, not public roa

    I agree as well.

I am obviously not an F1 driver (I wish), but after years of driving on the track (coming up to 100 track days) with a track spec car, I just don't find pushing a street car on public roads to be exciting. For one, it's dangerous, there are too many cars, and too many things to hit, and second street tires (even the most expensive ones) totally suck. Once you have run 12" wide slicks at a race track, even the latest $500ea Pirelli/Pilot spec tires are garbage.

I personally find even some of the most impressive cars on street tires, to be an excercise in fustration.
