You have a much higher chance of getting hit in the US than Germany because you're often in the middle of nowhere in Germany, whereas even in the suburbs it's not uncommon to be surrounded by cars at all times. Do I think Germans are better drivers? Sure, but the traffic situation is nothing alike.

I personally do not think 200 kph on the Autobahn is safer than 70 mph in America. Most people on the Autobahn in Germany are not doing 200 kph anyway. Whenever I do, I'm constantly passing people and rarely being passed.

200 kph in Germany with American levels of traffic would not be safe at all IMO.

And as usual your posts are mostly wrong again. I am really seeing a trend.

In and around Stuttgart, Munich, and other big cities there are clogged highways too, but they are still much safer than any American ones. Drivers don't go weave in and out of their lanes constantly in Europe.

A lot of the German highways are restricted, mostly are 120lm/hr or 110km/hr. People do travel faster than that but not much, and they still obey the first rule of driving, stay right unless passing. No one is getting frustrated getting stuck behind someone driving slow on the passing lane. That's one of the major reason on American highways being unsafe.

200km/hr is a great cruising speed on the unrestricted section, one can make good time while driving leisurely.

    Concur on all counts.

And you're not going 200 kph on clogged highways in Germany because A) they're clogged and B) they're usually restricted.

The places you go 200 kph in Germany are similar to middle of nowhere America, where there is barely any traffic in the first place, thus 200 kph on those autobahns is definitely not safer than 70 mph in America. I'm familiar with the stretched of unrestricted highways in German and they are nothing like suburban highways in America.

You cannot just compare two speeds like that because 70 mph is the speed limit in the middle of nowhere and the speed limit in the suburbs too in America.

Seeing how you keep defending the ugly American drivers, I can only assume you are also part of that problem? You are also those left lane hoggers and/or you read eat sleep while driving?

Yes Whoopsy, you're safer doing a 125 mph in Germany than you are doing 70 mph on this road in America.

    Re: Mercedes E63 S AMG Edition 1 (2018) - Short Review (incomplete)

That is hilarious, you are comparing an unrestricted Autobahn section to a two way road without separation with oncoming trafic, no fences blocking wildlife from jumping in the road, and practically no hard shoulder to stop a car safely... goes to show how much you know about road safety, unless you are pointing to the afact that its completely empty and away from civilization to prove than a completely empty and irrelevant road is safer in which case you it just shows you are very desperate to just keep arguing.

The point is that the parts of the autobahn without restrictions are not heavily trafficked, thus if you would compare them to similarly empty roads in the US, you absolutely would not be safer going 125 mph.

The other point is that once again Whoopsy is bizarrely out of touch with reality. Just like his SI unit of volume B^3 (Birkin Bag Boxes).

Who cares!! Add that as one of the reasons why its would be safer than a US highway if you want, the fact remains the same. The problem about needing to argue obsessively about everything is that you clucth at straws on every argument.

thus if you would compare them to similarly empty roads in the US, you absolutely would not be safer going 125 mph.

You would still be safer because they are not constructed remotely the sa!e safetwise, the drivers you still share them with are not the same, you dont have a medical helicopter 5 mins away on call, and so on... Oh, and there are less Rav4 hogging the left lane on the autobahn smiley

Speed and driving skills are related.

The better skilled drivers can do higher speed without problem.

American drivers in general are of lower skills hence they can't even handle 30 mph. Most, but not all of them, do not pay attention when driving.

Few years ago there as a province wide increase in highway limit, 10km/hr. Critics said that's gonna be a blood bath of death motorists. Actual fact? Death rate went down. Noticeably.

Canadian drivers in general are less distracted than American ones. We even have laws against distracted driving, like using a cell phone. Those tickets are more costly and carry more penalty points than a speeding ticket believe it or not.

I did 278 kph yesterday, Autobahn was a bit crowded and speed limited (changing electronic speed limit signs) and I drive only high speed when I don't pass more than one car (because out of stupidity or whatever, people tend to try to pass the car in front of them without looking in the mirror what is coming on the passing lane from behind).

Usually, I can do the full 300 (I do over 320 kph all the time in my R8) in my backyard. Yes, the Autobahn can be crowded but usually only in the morning and late afternoon and/or on specific routes which are used for commuting and/or passing through Bavaria. I do not drive full speed at night anymore since a friend hit a rabbit(!) at night at over 300 kph a couple of years ago and barely survived it. My E63S has the optional multi beam light, which is excellent at night but still...no thanks.

Regarding the Swiss sportscar drivers: They often "invade" our A96 just to try out their cars. Hint: There is always someone faster so please follow the law in Germany and keep it always on the right lane after you passed a car. I spend every weekend cursing and driving behind Swiss drivers because they think 240 is fast... Smiley

Where the willingness is great, the difficulties cannot be great.

Funny: In Germany, we have no general speed limit and the number of deaths drops year by year, despite people getting more powerful and faster cars. Also, compared to other countries in Europe, we have one of the lowest accident rates.

Compared to the USA? Well...as far as I understood, there were 127 traffic deaths per million inhabitants in 2016. In Germany? Well, 39 traffic deaths per million inhabitants.  3x more traffic deaths in the USA compared to Germany. What does this tell you? Maybe if some drivers in the US would understand how dumb texting and driving is... Give them a 1000 bucks fine if they don't understand, they will understand. My kids invented a game while driving in the US: How many people are texting and driving. The results were often shocking, basically every second or third driver they spotted in the Miami area was texting while driving. This is just pure stupidity. Smiley

The secret behind less traffic deaths? Simple: Very good driver education, mentality (oh boy, Italy is the best example that mentality plays a huge role in driver behavior), good roads and a general sense of "restraint" when it comes to speeding in speed limited zones.

My last self inflicted accident happened at age 19...I am 53 now. In these 34 years, I had one single situation where I said "this was close" but it wasn't my fault. I "saved" it by being vigilant and it was one of those one in a million situations which normally just don't happen. Driving at higher speeds, you always need to be vigilant. No talking to your passengers, no day dreaming, no changing radio stations/whatever, no looking at your phone, every distraction could be your last one. Usually, when I want to talk to my passengers and/or enjoy music or just have a relaxed drive, I lower the speed substantially. Sometimes I enjoy driving slow (which for me means 140-160 kph) but only when I have other people in the car.

Did I invent the safe driving? Certainly not but so many accidents could be avoided if people would only respect the basic driving guidelines. The most important driving rule is: Adapt your driving to the driving situation/environment and driving skills.

To be fair...most of them are not really sportscar drivers but weekend visitors in their fast sedans/etc., trying out the top speed of their family sedans and ordinary cars. No problem but there is a reason we have a "Rechtsfahrgebot" (mandatory right lane driving after passing).

I had a few of them contacted me before asking fro more pictures of my previous AMGs. They might came across their signature plaque online in forums and would actively seek out the owner to make contact. One of them actually built the engines in 2 of my cars.

Not as fast as my R8... Smiley Smiley

Guys, I really think I need to do some polishing on my English because I get the feeling you take everything I say seriously. Smiley

But isn't it you who always blames us for incompatible humour or not using the appropriate smiley. Smiley

No, I blame you for German humor, this is much worse. Smiley Smiley

Well, as you seem to be one of the few who fail to understand my humour, I don't care. SmileySmiley

Or most people are just too polite... Smiley
