GT2 takes back ring record for Porsche

    From http://www.kw-suspension.com/en/40_News/10_KW_News/10_Company/newsentry.php?we_objectID=827
(Includes video, but not of record lap)

    Quote:
On 4th August 2005, Porsche tuner "edo competition" & KW suspension established a new lap record for road approved vehicles.

Edo's Porsche 996 GT 2 RS, excellently prepared and equipped with a KW variant 3 inox-line coilover, with rebound & bump adjustment, and a 612 hp engine, Patrick Simon went out for the big challenge.

For quite a long time Wolfgang Kaufmann was able to hold the lap record of 7.32.52 in a Gemballa Porsche, until he lost his record to Horst von Saurma in a Porsche Carrera GT, who then went on to beat Kaufmann with a lap time of 7.32.44. On 25th October 2004, Michael Düchting raised the stakes extremely higher and achieved a lap time and new lap record of 7.18.01 in his Donkervoort RS.

Last Thursday driver Patrick Simon of the edo competition group topped it all. The Donkervoorts spectacular record was broken after less than one year. With a 7.15.63 lap, Simon brought more than just a new minimum time to the Nordschleife.

Simon had not doubted his success for any minute...
The Nuerburgring Nordschleife is one of the most difficult tracks with so many different grip levels because of different road surfaces, weather conditions, etc... so the suspension also had a huge impact in the result. The cooperation with KW suspension was absolutely the right choice as such a partner really understands to provide the perfect material and know how for the setup work to achieve that fantastic goal.

Re: GT2 takes back ring record for Porsche

I'd seen that video before, but had no idea that the car was road legal.
The record is back where it belongs , for now at least.

Re: GT2 takes back ring record for Porsche

So does that mean the CGT is chop liver?

It only proves that these records are meaningless. Take any performance car, mod it and put it in the hands of a terrific driver and voila a new record.

This is one of the rare occasions when I agree with you, Nick!

To have any meaning, the list of lap-times would need to be limited to those of production spec cars.

Re: GT2 takes back ring record for Porsche

    pretty old

Re: GT2 takes back ring record for Porsche

The record holder before this GT2 was the Donkervoort RS, which I believe was powered by a 350hp Audi engine. That's about all I know about the car, I don't know if it's a production car like the CGT, or more of a kit car.
The GT2 that beat its time was obviously heavily modified, but modified or not, it's still a street legal car that put in a time of 7:15 at the 'ring.
However, Nick makes a good point. Maybe there should be some sort of distinction made between factory stock production cars and street legal modified cars.

    Exactly, modded-car times are useless.

Re: GT2 takes back ring record for Porsche

    You guys agree with Nick?

    Sorry, I don't...

Atmittedly the weakest point on those cars are the tires, but it still takes a lot to go that fast. It might be more of a display of the manufacturer's or tuner's potential, but anyone who has seen Radical (?) or Edo video should be able to imagine how well-prepared those cars have to be!

The CGT is still the king of production cars to ME, any other kitcar is meaningless in my eyes since it neither provides the safety, comfort or daily-drivability of that car!

Re: GT2 takes back ring record for Porsche

Agree with Nick? till hell freezes over

No, I just mean that n-ring lap times of modded cars are meaningless, there are too many varianbles, compromises, etc. introduced when modding a car that will render the lap time useless as a reference. Only complete Stock cars can be used as a reference and show the pontential of the car on the streets.

Hmnn, should I start to fell insulted because people are embarrassed to agree with me?

Re: GT2 takes back ring record for Porsche

no, no, just two "differenet" points of view

Re: GT2 takes back ring record for Porsche

I agree, totally meaningless.....I'm sure somewhere in the world I could license an Audi R8 for the street, remove the ALMS restrictors and get JJ Lehto to drive and set an outright lap record.

Nick, don't draw any false connections between being insulted and having people agree with you.

I'm quite sure you are insulted much more often than you have people agree with you.

Fair enough but I never see anyone modify a Ferrari and attempt to take the record? Maybe it helps to have a good foundation to start with

Re: GT2 takes back ring record for Porsche

The previous record holder were Donkervoort RS and a Radical (forgot which one ). I'd say they're at least as far from a street car as this tuned TT.

    No, just face it.

I woudn't count on that numbers up to the last digit, that is definately correct - but isn't it fascinating to see three very different cars, a kitcar with turbocharged Hayabusaengine, a Lotus-7-derivative with huge wings and Audi-engine and a modified GT2 all performing a similiar laptime?
On top of that, I bet a Carrera GT with a similiar layout and tires would be in the same region as well.

Regarding the Audi R8, this car is not at all setuop for the Nordschleife, Frank Biela was performing some demo laps prior to the 24h-race and he stated that a competitive laptime would demand a very different setting of suspension and especially ground clearance. So let's wait and see who brings the next car to the Circuit - I would be happy to see an R8 or Enzo there.

The Northloop is still one, if not the, most demanding track - for driver and machine! But hey, I should improve my laptimes there...
