    2000 Boxster RPM drop

My Boxster has 53,000 miles and after it warms up the RPMs drop to about 600rpm and back up to 800rpm. It is not so bad when the AC is on. It is very annoying and I cannot seem to find any fix for this. The dealer said it was because of bad gas, but I put nothing in but 92+ octane. Has anyone else had this problem?

    Re: 2000 Boxster RPM drop

I have a 986 and run only on 98 octane. Never had this trouble.

    Re: 2000 Boxster RPM drop

Welcome to Rennteam. Very low octane fuel like that can't help but I am not sure if you can get higher "over there". I usually ran my last Boxster on Shell Optimax 98 octane, but out of necessity have used inferior quality supermarket 95 octane fuel with no problems.

Sometimes all the different measures and product names can be disturbing. But as for the octane-numbers, this time UK shares the same system with the "continent" whereas the US have their own rules. In order to compare the US octane numbers with European numbers you have to add 5 - meaning 92+ octane in US is exactly the same like 97+ octane in Europe. Hence the problem shouldn't be fuel related.

Well I learn something new every day. Why is it America has to do things differently to the rest of the planet?

Maybe for the same reasons why the UK likes to do things differently like the rest of Europe

I still hope that globalization will not equalize everything at one day - would be very boring, even Rennteam would miss some topics (like this one)

That's different. We're British and America is merely one of our colonies. (I don't recognise the Declaration of Independence). Everything useful they learned from us.

    Re: 2000 Boxster RPM drop

This CAN be a problem with your gasoline but is doesn't have to be...

Idle speed in my 987 is about 650rpm once the engine is warm--are your idle speeds correct for your model year?
When I had a similar prolem in a non-Porsche car, it turned out that the sensor responsible for monitoring throttle position was going bad, so maybe there is some similar electronic sensor componenet issue?

Idle speed is automatically increased when the AC compressor is on to prevent stalling, that's why it's better when the AC is working.

Anyway, I hope you get it sorted.

Exactly. Like why a monarchy is an embarrassment to the civilized world. (I'm allowed to write this. I'm about as blue-blooded an Anglophile American as there is-I think Alexander Hamilton should have been our first President.... ).

That's all right, these days niether does our president.

    Re: 2000 Boxster RPM drop

Dear rennteammer welcome .I am new around too!
Now I know that on boxters with time there is a problem with a part called debimetre in french. This tends to miswork as the milleage goes up and then you start loosing power slowly....

Another hint is that the radiator of your car may be loaded with dead insects and other similar garbage thus leading to bad cooling of the engine, loss of power etc.

i beleive that if there was a problem with low octane then the car would even be worse when cold...

thats it for the moment see your OPC..

Hi Florent Living at Corfu....hhhhmmm must be nice to live where all the pale guys from Germany spend their holidays
The debimetre should be the mass air flow (MAF) sensor, right
You're absolutely right about the radiators (good hint ): it's amazing how much garbage can be found in the compartment in front of the radiators just after a couple of weeks
Don't be afraid to you reach with your hands behind the plastic fins in front of the radiator (the fins are very flexible) in order to clean up. After taking away the bigger garbage parts over there I use a vacuum cleaner also.

    Re: 2000 Boxster RPM drop

All better.Carbon build up had prevented the MAF to properly adjust the amount of air going into the engine. It was a bit pricy. Total it was $890 dollars, Fuel Injector cleaning and a new MAF sensor. The car runs ten times better. Thanks for everyones help.
