    SL 65 AMG and S 65 AMG

Rumors indicate that AMG might offer a SL 65 AMG and even a S 65 AMG end of this year or beginning of next year.

Re: SL 65 AMG and S 65 AMG

I spoke last night with the chiarman of Daimler-Chrysler Italy and he said that no V12 Kompressor will be introduced in the SL series! Hope it will be right...
He said also that the SLR will have "more than 600HP"...

    Cheers

    He's right, there won't be a V12 Kompressor.
The CL 65 AMG does not have a supercharged (Kompressor) V12 engine but a bi-turbo (two turbo chargers) V12 engine.

    GST 65??

I wonder if Mercedes will use the same V12 bi turbo engine in the GST. It make sense since they both share the same chassis. It will be a walk in the park for Mercedes to win back the 'fastest SUV' in the world title.

at least I know I will be in the market for one...

    Light Steering

What about that lack of steering feel though William?
I remember that's what really put me of the SL55 when I tried it, and that's the same for our SL500, the confort is immense but as a downside you really feel disconnected from the road, the drive even though fast is not sporty.
Easter lonb week end coming up. I might (just might) get hold of an SL55 for four days which would be rather nice and will get me a better insight of that car. I'll see if one can actually have fun with it and drive it like a sport car. According to Zzoba's good report, not really, but we'll see...
    Fanch.

As far as I heard, the GST will not get any engine above 360 HP power, at least in the beginning. I'm also not aware that the S-class and the GST share the same chassis. As far as I heard, the GST chassis is a slightly modified ML chassis (new ML class!). Both models will be build in the US.
The new ML's AMG version is rumored to deliver around 460 HP using the supercharged V8 engine. But as always...rumors have to be taken with a grain of salt.

To fanch: I'm not sure if the steering is the only problem. It seems that the suspension setup isn't very sporty and this setup provides a pretty strange steering feel. A more direct steering would be desireable but different damper setups and swaybars too. There is a rumor that AMG plans a real sportscar in an acceptable price range similar to Porsche's GT3 and BMW's M3 CSL but no details have been published yet. It is very likely that it will be based on the CLK 55 AMG.

There is no doubt that Mercedes and AMG have the technical knowhow to build a great sportscar but I'm not sure if they have the customers for such a product.

    Re: GST 65??

You got it absolutely right Christian (again!)
Mercedes AMG builds the cars their clients want, and before all, they want loads of power with loads of comfort. And the price to pay is uncommunicative chassis with numb steering, but man are they fast and comfortable !!!
    Fanch.

Re: SL 65 AMG and S 65 AMG

    Sorry Max, wrong again,
The SL600 is already available and it has a V12 Biturbo of 500 hp, give the chairman of Mercedes Italy the web address of Rennteam so that he can get up to speed with what's going on at Mercedes these days.
    Fanch.
PS: And the SLR is more likely to get over 700hp as mentionned earlier on the forum too.

Re: SL 65 AMG and S 65 AMG

Max, I don't know about the chairman of DC Italy but I know somebody who visited AMG lately and saw a SL 65 over there. Unfortunately nobody was able to tell him if they plan to produce this car but it seems that the brake system was pretty interesting...a ceramic brake.

Personally I don't think it makes sense to put the V12 bi-turbo with 612 HP in a CL but not in a SL. So yes, I think AMG will build a SL 65 AMG but there is no official word yet.

Re: SL 65 AMG and S 65 AMG

as far as i am informed the CL 65 is a very special "built on demand" car by AMG. no mass production car in terms of the CL55 / SL55 / E55 -- more like the old SL 73, which was sold in very limited numbers to special clients.

so i am sure if there are 10 people out there who'd like a SL 65, AMG will offer it. and i agree completely with RC that the twin turbo V12 makes even more sense in the SL.

    the new rack and pinon

is much better than the older steering system. I had a older generation C280 and compare to my C32. Its really a world of difference in term of steering feel.

But I agree, it is not even close to what a sport car steering should feel like. Maybe Mercedes believe most people can not really tell the difference or they don't really care for a good steering. In fact many people who owned the Cayenne said it drive like a 'Porsche' really give me a good laugh! You can see how cluess people are about anything Creating a superior sport car steering really will not benefit Mercedes too much.

Having said that, I still enjoy my C32 very much... I don't know why, but somehow I just like it more than the M3.

    I heard from somewhere

The GST is = to a more luxury SUV to the M-class. Another word I thought it would be a S-class or similar SUV. Maybe it is just a mini-van with off road capability after all

G-wagon with the V12 bi turbo... I would love that
