Cayenne S hesitation issues still not fixed...

Does anyone have more info about how to resolve the hesitation issue. The W516 has been performed on this vehicle but it has not resolved the issue. Upon first starting the car in the morning it lurches and hesitates causing a major safety issue. It gets better when the car has ben driven around for a while.

The car was a Feb-2003 build... any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

The cold start behavior is something I have no problem with and is not the hesitation issue I worry about. It is the hesitation after warm-up that bothers me. I do not believe any fixes have been proposed for the cold start behavior you describe. The Cayenne has a cold start program that changes shift patterns to keep rpm's higher when the engine is cold. This is in the interest of raising engine temperature as soon as possible to keep emmissions low.

Same here, just had the W516 "fix" that didn't do much of anything. I still have to count "one thousand one, one..." before ANY acceleration occurs and then comes the rocket launch. This truck is such a POS and is ruing Porsche reputation with existing and future customers. I'm asked several times a week what I think of ours, and I don't lie!

Re: Cayenne S hesitation issues still not fixed...

Up til now there is no fix. Don't believe all that gossip talk on various internet forums. No fix yet because Porsche seems to think most customers don't have any problems with the "hesitation".

A lot of people are on Porsche's back because of this issue, so maybe we come to a solution. Let's hope the best for the sake of us all, including Porsche's reputation of a sports car manufacturer.

Exactly! In fact, the issue that started this thread on "hesitation" was actually a complaint about the cold start shift mapping. This owner is not reporting a problem with the hesitation/throttle response that you and I normally refer to.

Re: Cayenne S hesitation issues still not fixed...

Actually GM... I haven't been able to drive it yet since the W516 fix took place. I am going by word of mouth from my mother who is many states away. I will be able to test it out in a couple weeks when I go back for the holidays. Interestingly enough I have no hesitation issues with my Cayenne S. In the past driving her car and my car was like driving two different cars from two different manufacturers!

Let's hope it is JUST the cold start issue.

Re: Cayenne S hesitation issues still not fixed...

PLEASE, I URGE you: whoever has problems with throttle/shifting hesitation (check the archives, we discussed it very often), DO NOT contact your dealer but Porsche DIRECTLY. They don't seem to be aware of an issue and dealers don't seem to communicate such issues to Porsche.

So again: contact Porsche DIRECTLY, your dealer should be able to give you the necessary contact phone numbers, eMail addresses, postal addresses, etc.

Re: Cayenne S hesitation issues still not fixed...

A while ago I had my DME reprogrammed under recall W516. It didn't help my transmission hesitation. This week I had my transmission control unit replaced on my Cayenne Turbo and the effect is remarkable. I think the recall is W515, but I'm not sure. I was told that the control unit fix is for hard shifting when cold, but there's a lot more to it than that. The transmission is now eager to downshift, sometimes 2 gears if needed. I had complained for a long time about the reluctance of the transmission to downshift on partial throttle, but that problem seems to be fixed. It now drives more like what you would expect from a Porsche.

Re: Cayenne S hesitation issues still not fixed...

What is the effect now of turning off PSM on the shift patterns? Is the effect different than it was before the control module replacement?

I had the first gearbox control unit replaced many months ago, I suppose it is the same software. It fixed a few issues and improved shifting (now always one gear lower than before at the same speed) but it didn't do too much, if anything, to the hesitation issue.

There seems to be a problem with actually being aware of the hesitation: if you drive a lot on the highway or the Autobahn or even on fast country roads, you probably won't feel too much of the hesitation/shifting issues. But drive your car mainly in the city and it shows up. My Cayenne Turbo still has it and sometimes I'm so fed up with driving it... My wife refuses to drive the Cayenne Turbo because of the throttle response, she's used to our second family car, a ML55 AMG which we own for almost 4 years now and never let us down.
Porsche should be aware that the hesitation/shifting issue will damage their reputation as a sportscar manufacturer sooner or later. While first-time Porsche buyers and Cayenne customers don't seem to have a problem with that, Porsche sportscar owners (or former owners), especially those who own (or owned) a BMW X5 4.4/4.6is or Mercedes ML55 before, are not happy at all. I already know a lot of Cayenne Turbo owners who sold their Cayenne exactly because of the hesitation issue and I'll add myself to that list if they don't get it right soon. We were very happy with our ML55 and if the new ML63 is as sporty as the specs indicate (~ 460 HP and air suspension), we won't go for a Cayenne again. I really don't get it: Mr. Wiedeking promised us a unique product in the line of the Porsche tradition. Unique it is indeed but surely not a Porsche how I understand it. It handles well but the throttle/shifting response and even the brake isn't up to Porsche specs. And it doesn't help me too much if every Porsche employee I talk to assures me that the next Cayenne generation will be improved. No thanks.

Re: Cayenne S hesitation issues still not fixed...

I don't know what the difference in the effect driving with PSM off now has, since I didn't do much of that before the change.
