    997tt next month, GT3 in April 07

My salesman called me today and offered me an April allocation for a GT3. They have 20 names on the waiting list for an expected 4 cars. I have found him buyers for 2 997tt's so he is paying me back. I am considering driving the 997tt until then, comparing it vs the GT3 and then deciding which on to keep. Any thoughts?

Re: 997tt next month, GT3 in April 07

I really love the front end of the GT3. It should be a great performer. Go for the GT3.

Get the 997TT, then tune it to 550-600HP next year after tuners have developed and tweaked their packages, by then the GT3 will feel like a Miata and the TT will become a keeper.

Re: 997tt next month, GT3 in April 07

they are two different cars... are you getting the TT in Tiptronic?

Exactly.. GT3 hype lasts up to the minute you compare it to a 997tt. Unless you are running at Porsche GT3 cup or sth..
And if tt is too soft etc for you, all you need to do is change springs to -20mm, chip it, change cats and you have carrera GT-like pace..

Re: 997tt next month, GT3 in April 07

Getting both in 6spd. I figure after 6 months of driving the turbo I'll have a good idea if it is going to be a keeper or not. My dealership predicts a total allocation of 6-8 GT3's in Houston total, and he's getting calls from around the country for a car. The GT3 may just be a good option to have on the table.

Re: 997tt next month, GT3 in April 07

If I had the financial wherewithall, I think I would do what you are contimplating. I would find the Turbo to be exhilirating for urban boosting, but the GT3 is so much of a purer car. There's something about that (the exhaust, the NA engine wailing to 8400rpms, the lighter weigh) is so much more fulfilling, especially if you're connected to pure motorsporting.

However, there is one caveat. I'm staunchly against US allocation GT3s for their miserly lack of sunroof delete. It's a shame for a car that seems oh so great.

Re: 997tt next month, GT3 in April 07

Well, my dealer is giving me the GT3 allocation with no additional deposit - I have sent him 2 buyers for turbo allocations and he was awarded an extra GT3 and turbo allocation (BTW anyone want a Jan07 delivery turbo in Houston?) for his performance. The GT3 option is costing me nothing in other words!

Regarding the GT3 sunroof issue, I look at it this way. The GT3 now has active suspension to make the ride more compliant for street in addition to taut for the track, so why not have a sunroof? The minimal weight difference is acceptable considering that you are getting the ultimate dual purpose car. The old GT3 was only tolerable for aggressive track driving, whereas the new one can also be a boulevard cruiser. If my two track cars had that kind of flexibility I would have more room in the garages for other types of cars!

Re: 997tt next month, GT3 in April 07

Dude, that's really awesome two is always better than one!
BTW I spec'd out my TT today. Thanks!

    1. 997 Turbo is the "monster", it is pretty fast and it can do it at a very subtle level during almost any weather situation, no matter if it rains or snows.
    2. the 997 GT3 is the best value for money you can get at Porsche right now, very nice track car, very capable daily driver too.

For occasional track racing and as a weekend fun car, the GT3 is just perfect.
As a daily driver or just a very fast fun car with a lot of safety "cushions", the 997 Turbo it is.

Difficult decision, believe me. The 997 GT3 appeals a little bit more to the senses since it seems to be stiffer and louder. The 997 Turbo is so fast...almost too easy to drive fast, which doesn't necessarily mean that it is easy to drive at the limit.

Good luck with your decision, it won't be easy.

Re: 997tt next month, GT3 in April 07

This is what I am thinking:

Re: 997tt next month, GT3 in April 07

while there is no comparision yet. there always seemed to be a fair # of 996 gt3's for sale at low prices with low miles often with multiple owners. my take on this is people don't enjoy driving them as much as similar year turbos.

with no money up you have some time to decide, can't loose deal.imo

Re: 997tt next month, GT3 in April 07

Get the TT, imo the GT3 is a car looking for a niche, don't get me wrong I love this car. But, it's clearly not a race car, yet not a geat daily driver either, what it is happens to be a homogenized street car produced so porsche can race competitively in certain classes. If a pure track car is what you want just buy a cup car, tons of 'em on the market, and be done with it. Who cares if the GT3 has a sunroof, it's a street car not a race car for crap sake. How many guys are turning such fast laps that the extra 50# from a sunroof is gonna make any difference anyways?
    JMO guys.

Chris, I've been thinking the same thing. There are SO many people who are just going absoutely crazy about the sunroof issue. Really, are all these people so good that they are really going to notice it? I would think if your'e that good and race so much, you'd have a dedicated track car. This is still a street car.

Now, i'm sure there are some people who are good enough that they will be able to tell the difference but I just have a hard time believing it's as many as complain about it.

If someone has a tall torso or is unusually tall, then being "Good Enough" has nothing to do with it. Fitting inside the car while wearing a helmet can be very helpful

Point well taken. But, the number of threads (here and other places) where people are going nuts is about the weight, how could you do this?, this is blasphemy etc. Very little about being able to fit in the car

Re: 997tt next month, GT3 in April 07

People who obsess about the 50# sunroof penalty should step on the scale first, take the stereo and a/c and window mechanisms out before worrying about the sunroof.

Re: 997tt next month, GT3 in April 07

    Eclou, you're so right.
