A visit to the Porsche dealer

I was in the area so I stopped in at a large p-car dealer yesterday. They had a large selection, though no gt3. I spent quite a bit of time looking around at and sitting in what they had. After enjoying the inventory I was offered a chance for a test drive.

I drove an 07 997 C2S. It had been a long time since I had driven a 911, back when they were air cooled. I was very impressed with this one.

The brakes and suspension were incredible, firm ride with 0 lean yet absorbing every bump in muted way and stopping on a dime with no nosedive.

The power was great and the shifting easy with solid short throws. I also liked the steering feel. The sound was very close to the air cooled carrera i had driven many years before.

I can compare the experience to what I have driven lately, my 85 928 S2 (pristine condition, powerful V8 with an amazing custom exhaust) and a ferrari 360 stradale. The power in the 928 is immediate and more forceful, the 997 is a mix of force and finesse, and the 360 is almost all finesse. The braking on the 997 and 360 are just incredible.

The 360 and 997 are true sports cars and are very tossable and nimble compared to the 928 gt feel. The handling seemed better to me on the 997 compared to the stradale. The sportiness and involvement is better in the 997 also because of the manual tranny compared to the paddle shifting ferrari.

The sound goes to the 928 (custom) with ease followed by the 360 which beats the 997 easy though the 997 was nice. The interior goes to the 928, still without doubt the best laid out and most comfortable driving position I know. I would have to take my eyes off the road to see the instruments on the 997 whereas on the 928 because of the lower set-up the instruments are part of the road view.

Fun- my particular 928 (there are many models) is more exotic and more fun all around than either of the others. But if i could take a 2nd fun ride of the two it would be the 997 C2S by the smallest fraction. It just feels more real and less like a video game than the ferrari. (cost or perceived value does not enter into the decision just driving pleasure.) an observation - the cayman S has a nicer cockpit.

This is Chambers Porsche in Boston and i had a fantastic experience with them.

    Some pics, the service area more porsches than you could imagine;

Re: A visit to the Porsche dealer

Is that 959? It is said to be as fast as 997TT.

    OMFG!!! Biiiiiiiig Mistake!

I bring mine in for service at 5AM and drop the keys in the slot, just to avoid infection by sales guys carrying the showroom virus!

Bought my 987S from them. They always seem to have a ton of cars on hand. The Service Manager is a stand up guy.

I don't think I'd want my Service Manager to be a comedian?

    Good one!

But the Service Manager is a stand up guy in the other sense. Here's why. After 4000 miles the rear tires on my 987S were bald through no fault of my own (your granny drives faster and pulls more G's than I do ). The Service Manager put the car on a rack and determined the rear toe settings were the cause of the problem. He spent the better part of an afternoon chasing down the Porsche rep and finally, by the of their telephone conversation Porsche agreed to comp me two new Michelins! He's also given me the lowest quote for PSE installation. Chambers Service will treat you well.

(Sadly, they weren't as competitive as the local P store when I bought my Cab.)

Thanks, not anytime soon. They talked me into the test drive, i never mentioned it, all i wanted to do is see what they had in stock. If i were to buy a 997 it would be used to avoid the deprec. hit.

But like i said in my write-up, there is very little that compares to the ownership experience of my 928.

Actually a great time, they make you feel welcome.

Nah, just kidding. Basically if I go into a showroom I'm afraid I'll walk out having bought something.

    nice

Re: A visit to the Porsche dealer

If I were to buy a Porsche supercar regardless of cost, value or expense of maintenance (as well as availability of spares), I'd definitely buy teh 959. I saw one at Champion Motors in Pompano Beach, FL where I bought my 997 Carrera S, and no pics can do it justice. I guess I am one of those who prefers the 959 to a GT1 or a Carrera GT even though I own both a modern and a 1987 3.2 L Carrera.
