    Tire Sealant

There I was about to achieve my automotive Shangra-la at this months autocross. Then interruptus maximus: I pull into tech inspection and learn that my right rear tire is going flat. I jumped into the fire drill to get it diagnosed and sealed , foolishly thinking I might still get to run in the autocross. Another screw (more on that later). It was in the last bit of tread before the sidewall. I called information to find the tire repair options on Sunday morning. Must have been the coffee that led me to think I could get help. So I decided to fix it myself with the tire sealant in the comprehensive 997 tool kit. The sealant just ran out the puncture and made a mess. I know, the manual says "to seal small cuts". Still believing I was going to get some runs in, I borrowed a plugging kit and got a seal. The one piece in the 997 tool kit I like is the air compressor. It worked better than one of the battery-powered compressors my fellow autocrossers made available. Then I came to my senses and decided not to run because I would have worried about the pulg losing seal. And if it did, it would have damaged a wheel or worse. So in the end I watched the autocross and the plug held for the 50 mile drive home. Lesson learned: If you have flat and want to get moving again the tire sealant may not work; a plug probably will. I plan to keep a plugging kit in the trunk. They are not hard to use. Of course, I will have the tire replaced next week because punctures invalidate the speed rating on the tire. And thanks to my sales professional who advised me to get the $500.00 tire protection plan, my cost will be around $6.00 - yes six dollars! This will be the third tire replaced under the plan. Last summer I had two tires repalced for $12.00 I had a screw in the right rear and a nail in the right front. Anyone planning to buy a new car should ask if a similar tire protection plan is available.

    Re: Tire Sealant

Without a spare tire today's Carrera drivers would be well ahead of the game by carrying a radial tire repair kit with them and understand how they work. (In short, have done a few repairs in the past). Although I have 100% road hazard tire coverage for 10 years on this car there are times that I would rather do a quick fix and be back on the road than sitting around waiting on tow truck.

    Dan:

Can you recommend a tire repair kit? TIA.

    Re: Tire Sealant

Wow, that was cheap for a 295 size tire replacement under the warranty...

What tire plan are you referring to? Was it something you purchased from your dealer or aftermarket?

    Re: Tire Sealant

Don't you mean the replaced tire cost you 506.00 since you already paid 500.00 before hand. I guess since you had 2 other tires replaced it would be 3 tires for 518.00. I must say 3 tires replaced seems like a lot. I'm lucky in that I haven't had a flat tire in 10 years. I know my luck will run out soon but I hope not.

"What tire plan are you referring to? Was it something you purchased from your dealer or aftermarket? "

I would appreciate ANY information on the tire plan. Never mentioned by my dealer, and would seriously consider it, and even purchase one now if I can (got 5,000 happy and flat free miles on the ODO).

I should tell you about the time after receiving the car (in January) and waiting for the first warm spell (March) so that I could apply Rejax to the inside of the wheels. I removed each wheel to do so, and found a screw "trying" to work its way into the tire - was imbedded 1/8 of an inch. Boy was I glad I went thru the trouble of removing each wheel....

    Re: Tire Sealant

Craig, do you live near, or often drive by, new home construction sites?

I paid $500.00 for the InTire Vehicle Tire and Wheel Guarantee. Last summer I had the right rear ($501.00)and the right front($335.00) replaced. The total with the miscellaneous stuff was $962.00. My out of pocket cost was $11.55. Wednesday I get another new 295/30 ZR 19 N1 for about six dollars. I hope your luck holds. Even with this tire protection plan it is a hassle.

I meant to answer your question -- you are correct. After I get the third tire replaced on Wednesday I will have paid about $518.00 for two 295/30s and one 235/35.

    Re: Tire Sealant

I also bought the tire and wheel replacement plan through my dealer (cost $600-i guess i got ripped off) when I purchased the car. My dealer said he highly recommended the coverage. He told me they had had over $4k in claims for that one month. I was told that the only way the tire or wheel would be replaced under this plan was if the tire was not repairable and/or the wheel would no longer hold air (i.e. bent). In the posts above were all of these tire replacements for tires that could not be repaired (e.g. puncture in sidewall?). Or did I misunderstand and they will replace any tire that is punctured.

    Re: Tire Sealant

All of the incidents I have had were tire punctures. I understand that any puncture of a speed rated tire invalidates the speed rating and must be replaced to preserve the capabilities of the 997. I want to believe that you were given less than accurate information about the terms. Recommend you call one of the numbers on your policy and get clarification from the provider. I don't think you got ripped off. Granted your policy cost $100.00 more than I paid, but if you are covered for five years and you use it as much as I have you will recoup the $600.00.
