Odd question about the 997... ?

Has anyone noticed that when starting the 997 with the xenon lights on the lights raise and lower back to normal elevation... is there a reason for them doing that?

I just noticed that today and was wondering why

Re: Odd question about the 997... ?

Even though these days lights may have protective circuitry, I never start a car w/ the lights on - only turn the lights after the engine is running.

    Self-levelling test

Xenon's are equiped with a self-levelling mechanism. At start up they test themselves to make sure the beams are set at the right horizontal angle. My allroad does this as did my C4S. I Europe they have to do this by law (I believe) but I'm not sure about the US.

    Re: Self-levelling test

Yes, they have to have self-leveling AND integrated headlight washers (because xenons efficiency decreases a lot when the healights are covered with dirt)

It must be OK to do so since you can set them as DRL (daytime running lights)
in the additional memory setings with Sport Chrono Plus...If you choose to do so

BMW does it too. Maybe they are vacuum-actuated and they charge and then level themselves upon start up.

Here is what your owner's manual says about that......

    "Automatic Headlight Beam
    Adjustment
    Vehicles with Bi-Xenon headlights feature
    automatic headlight beam adjustment.
When the ignition is switched on, the level of the
headlight beam automatically changes in accordance
    with the vehicle load.
The level of the headlight beam is automatically
kept constant during acceleration and braking.
    Checking operation
    1. Switch the low beam on.
    2. Insert ignition key and switch ignition on.
The light beam first dips all the way down and
is then adapted to the vehicle load.
If this test item is not met, the headlight beam
adjustment system must be checked by an authorized
    Porsche dealer."

You can hear it actuating - just turn your key to " on " but don't start engine : you will always hear that muffled shuffling sound from the headlight area of the trunk , irrespective of the headlight switch position. 996s had this start up leveling check , too, even with the '99-01 low beam only Litronic HIDs, preceding the '02 onward Bi-xenon HIDs .

Re: Odd question about the 997... ?

thanks for the replies, i guess it makes sense to check that, i wish the SUV's in america could level their headlights, when im in a smaller car it feels like if one SUV is behind me they are constantly driving with their brights on (when they arnt)

Re: Odd question about the 997... ?

does the washer by the headlights activate by itself? or manually?

    From the owner's manual:

    "A - Headlight washer (Vehicles with Bi-Xenon
    headlights):
The washer sprays only while low beam or high
    beam is switched on.
f Briefly push button A to operate headlight
    washer system.
f If heavily soiled, repeat wash.
The headlight washer system automatically sprays
once for every ten times the front windshield
    washer system is operated.
    Note
The windshield washer nozzles are heated
when the ignition is on, as a precaution against
    freezing."

The button "A" they refer to is located on the windshield wiper/washer lever. So to answer your question, it is manually operated except for the fact that the headlights get automatically sprayed after you have used the windshield washer system (once every ten times you use the windshield washer).

It is explained on p.111 of your owners manual (rtfm)

You press the button on bottom of the wiper stalk to activate.
As well, the headlight washer system automatically sprays once for every ten times the front windshield washer system is operated

If this means what I think it does, I agree.

Re: Odd question about the 997... ?

I think it's activated with the windshield washer...

Re: Odd question about the 997... ?
